Make ParagonWiki Your Google Result

A little history...

1. TonyV originally hosted the Paragon Wiki.

2. He moved it to Wikia, which provides advertiser supported 'free' web hosting to specialized Wikis.

3. Wikia started to allow Real Money Traders (aka Gold Farmers) and rival MMOs to advertise on the City of Heroes wikia pages, so, he moved the Wiki to the Titan Network.

4. Wikia continues to host the old CoH Wikia which is poorly maintained by the RMTers' surrogates as they simply copy info put up on the real Wiki. We try to discourage people from using that site. Any url with 'wikia' in it is the wrong one for good, up-to-date information.

5. The good urls (both lead to the same Wiki site) are: www.paragonwiki.com and http://wiki.cohtitan.com/wiki/Main_Page

Now, here's the rub. If people go to Google to look up CoH info, it is the Wikia sites which are given preferential listing at the top of the list (the Wikia uses 'tricks' to get their site listed on top though the Wiki is more used).

However, you can change that. If you have a Google account (through Gmail or Google Docs), the listings have an up-arrow and a boxed-x next to them. The up-arrow 'promotes' the listing and the boxed-x deletes that listing from the current search *and all future searches*!

So, go to Google and do a search for: wikia city of heroes. Then delete all the listings that have 'wikia' in the front part of the url [before the slash].

Then do a search for just city of heroes and you should see only the Titan or ParagonWiki address show up. Promote them.

Not only will this give you the correct Wiki address in the future, but we can hope that if enough of us do this, then maybe Google is keeping track of this 'scoring' of results and the Wikia will drop below the Wiki when others search for City of Heroes info.

Done!

I had no idea about all this business with the RMT'ers. I actually just assumed it was normal and uncontrollable given my experience with using the WoWwiki and SWGwiki.

Hmm... I've been going through trying to eliminate all my wikia search results, but the Player's Guide to the Cities/Credits result keeps appearing, no matter how many times I remove it from my results list. And it's not like it's a different link to the same page, it's the exact same URL every time...

Edit: It also won't let me add paragonwiki.com to the results list alongside wiki.cohtitan.com...

Done and done. Well, except that Paragon Wiki didn't even show up 30 pages in when searching for "city of heroes". I added it as my preferred result. That and poofed a lot of RMT hits. That was fun. *poof* Leave it to Google to add a silly graphics on deleting a result.

Also, remember to link it as a once in a while. More links = more Google, I think.

This. I don't know how much impact we're likely to have, but at least I won't have to worry about being redirected to a wikia link if I decide to look through Google rather than my Firefox keyword.

Sartre once said, "Hell is other people." What does that make an MMO?

I'm not going to bother doing it past a couple links, but I have to admit, the *poof* thing is really amusing.

There are no words for what this community, and the friends I have made here mean to me. Please know that I care for all of you, yes, even you. If you Twitter, I'm MrThan. If you're Unleashed, I'm dumps. I'll try and get registered on the Titan Forums as well. Peace, and thanks for the best nine years anyone could ever ask for.

Ditto, and I'm very glad you told me. I often put in Google searches like "paragonwiki invention enhancements" and the Wikia stuff always comes up on top. That always annoyed me, but I had no idea there was such a simple way to do something about it.

Also handy for Guild Wars' Wiki, which has virtually identical problems.

Google has had this feature for about half a year, but it wasn't 'till just now that I saw that they changed it so that it would remember the sites you nixed. Previously, deleting sites was only for that search, and they'd pop up again in new searches.

When I help on the tech forum with people's HiJackthis logs, I'm often looking up various processes and there are a certain few sites which look like they have info, but in reality they want to sell you their analyzing software. Being able to keep them from showing up in searches now is wonderful.

Did this a while back, but glad to see this idea being promoted

One irritating thing. If you search for "wiki City of Heroes" you get the results, do the removals and move Paragonwiki up and it is remembered. But if you search on "City of Heroes wiki" next time, it is a different search and the wikia results are back.

The paragonwiki.com URL never showed up when I searched for City of Heroes, so I added it. But they used the wiki.cohtitan.com/ URL for it. The paragonwiki.com URL does show up in links for sub-areas of the wiki, but I never saw it for the main page.

Done, and it seems to be working - http://wiki.cohtitan.com/ showed up on page 11 for me when I searched for 'city of heroes'

Also, someone may consider putting in better keywords. These are the current keywords on paragonwiki.com:

Code:
<meta name="keywords" content="Main Page,News/20091017,News/20090930,News/20090915,News,Double XP Weekends,Issue 16,News/20090716,News/20090805,News/20090826,Patch Notes/2009-09-15" />

Or if you just want to actually search the good site, you can do what I do and type into the google search what you're looking for, followed by "site: paragonwiki.com" without the quotes. I find that far easier and faster.

If there is one big thing I would change about the wiki it is the search tool. It's rather poor unless you know exactly how something is phrased on the wiki, and even then it seems to fail an inordinate amount of time.

Searching the wiki via google is the way to go.
