GR and Other Future Thingies

Well, if you're not looking around in other parts of the forums, there are big doings at Herocon.

Some screenies have been posted of the new GR graphics... apparently there will be an option to use the new "ultra" graphics, but they are optional. At least for the COH and COV stuff, not sure if that's the way it works for GR as well, or not. So that's nice, I know some people were worried about being able to play after a graphics upgrade. I'm hoping the rig I made in January can handle this okay.

I do think the graphics look nice, though I may turn off the new stuff sometimes to run with the old, no matter what... slightly different art style, in my opinion.

What else have I seen... demon MMs will have whips, so some will be happy there... though I find it a tad freaky.

Video of Posi presenting here. Haven't watched it yet, so I'll have to watch later.

Sounds like the side switching equals being able to go to the other side of the game, but you still have to use the market you started with (I hope this is incorrect, but it was tweeted/posted). I do not understand why the devs think it is better to keep things all separated, but whatever... they keep giving us different currencies, too.

One nice thing about the Going Rogue stuff is it will liven up the 40s for COH a bit... I'm rather tired of the Praetorian maps there and the reskinned Clockwork. Anyway, thoughts?

I had the same problem. Click the "View This Post" link in the upper right. It's free from the usual GG crap.

You're not trying to rickroll me, are you?

It's not just going to be two word post with a or something, is it?

Talnar;
I find your naivety in GG's posting "habits" disheartening.

Ugh, Ham, it's just GG posting screenshots. I wouldn't be referencing you to GR screenshots and just have some crap posting. I don't rickroll.

The video is highly worth looking at... Posi has some opening notes about GR and what they can tell you (I take that to mean they are only showing so much at this point), then lets the art department show the rest (Ken Morrisey, I think I heard). He tours you through the opening zone of GR and shows all the cool new stuff for the graphics (dynamic shadows, reflective windows, water, AND costumes). The last eight minutes show off the new Dual pistols, which looks cool in an Equilibrium/John Woo way. They also show you how COH and COV will look with the new graphics, so that's a nice bit as well.

Tail end lets you know about release info. Looking at 1st Quarter for beta, 2nd quarter for release. We'll see if that happens, but even if it gets delayed, we should hopefully be playing GR by this time next year.

Go to the 22 minute mark in the video to see Dual Pistols in action.

It is better to ask forgiveness than permission.

I don't even understand how this will work. Do Vigilantes and Rogues have access to both sides, or only the opposite side they started on? If it's the former, do they need to return to their side of origin to do business? If it's the latter, do they get access to the Wentworth's market through Black Market sites, and vice versa? Or maybe this is handled by having both Wentworth's and the Black Market in Praetoria, where everyone can go? What about Neutrals that start out in Praetoria? Is there a P-side market?

Also, will Vigilantes and Rogues be able to trade with regular Heroes and Villains? If so, they might create a thriving market of Vigilantes dealing loot easier obtained Blue side to the Villains (and Rogues).

So many questions because of that one statement. I don't know why the devs insist on keeping the market separate once side switching is in play.

Duel pistols. Omfg gimme.

Yeah, the dual pistols look quite sweet. Allowing different ammo and a change in secondary effects is interesting... helps out those heroes who think the bullets and fire only AR is too violent. Shooting ice is a little different, heh.

I like what looks like the Snipe power... after all the other crazy movement, you take aim a la Danny Glover or a lone gunman, and bang!

Oh, and the crowd in the movie is awesome, too: makes it even more fun to see everything. A little too chatty sometimes, but most of the time hilarious and enthusiastic. You don't get audiences like that everywhere (best movie audience I was ever with was a midnight showing of Fellowship of the Ring), so that makes the video even more fun. Oh, and I totally noticed the ambient shadow from the guy flying around before everyone else (you get a quick shot of it when he first takes off, but most people reacted minutes later when he actually highlighted it).

MG, from what I heard/understand, a rogue or vigilante will be able to go from one side to the other, wherever they feel like going: the only limitation being the markets, it looks like. I can only assume they'll be able to trade, however... otherwise teaming will be too difficult. Don't know for sure, of course. I really, really do not understand why the are keeping up the market separation: they had better not make a third market for Praetorian heroes/villains/rogues. I can't believe they would be that crazy, but I dunno... the markets are still separate.

For more hilarity, check the doom thread on this in the COH Discussion forums. Some guy is complaining since GR is only "a graphical update and 2 powersets." Not enough for him.

It's hilarious... I'm sure we know EVERYTHING about GR at this point (Posi says at 1:40 in the video that this is all they're allowed to show you right now), so this doom is just laughable. Once I know what all is in there, if there isn't much added to missions, etc., I'll complain. But for now, this is a great peak, and enough to get sane people excited.

The Devs keep saying "several zones". Do the Doomers imagine these zones will be devoid of contacts and missions?

What we've heard so far is really the icing on the cake as far as I'm concerned. The meat of GR is the new zones, contacts, arcs, etc.

Yeah, I really, really want new content. I like what we have, and like the new stuff, but want more stuff to do, and ways to do it. Eye candy will make it go even further, but I really want the new content. I really assume we'll have a lot with GR... they'd be insane not to have it, and I have all confidence it'll be there.

Viv, don't reroll! Just make a new version/name: no need to redo all that work!

A Rogue or Vigilante is an intermediate step between being a Hero or Villain. So while a Rogue cannot access WW, a Rogue who becomes a full fledged Hero can. Posi also said that a character can go from Hero to Vigilante to Villain, use the BM, then back to Hero and use WW and vice versa). Of course, this will take effort (how much isn't stated) and time.

Iirc, the intermediate roles cannot trade with the opposing faction, which would eliminate the work/time requirement mentioned above. (Posi mentioned trading insps, but I'm not sure if that only applies to intermediates, or if pure Heroes and Villains can trade with one another during coops.)

Heh, at least someone at the Vic tables was paying attention

There was a statement too about getting additional rewards, or at least different ones, by keeping your "moral compass" the same as you play through the new content. I have no idea what those may be, but it seems as though there will be some kind of carrot to keep people from jumping sides.

Thanks for the update, Sarrate. I watched the video but I didn't get that switching sides went further than Vigilante/Rogue. However, if Vigilantes and Rogues get access to both sides with the only restriction that they can't use the opposite-Market, I don't know why (absent RP reasons) everyone wouldn't want to walk the line all the time. We still haven't heard about the benefits of staying true to your initial moral compass, but I don't see how it could compete with all the extra content you get from straddling both sides.

Will have to see what contacts they're allowed to use. Can they o-zone in the opposite side? Start TF's? Enter bases? Going to have to see how big of pain in the rear this is. Hope they don't make it overly convoluted.

I would assume V/Rs can use all contacts, join all TFs/SFs, probably enter bases. I'm not sure about O-zone, but I would assume they can use the O-zone on the side they're on. To switch sides I think they're going to make you go through Praetoria.

If there are restrictions on actual content when you're V/R, then it becomes pointless. If there are no restrictions (aside from the market), then I see no reason (again, except RP reasons) why one wouldn't want to stay V/R forever.

Wish they'd just merge the markets.

If GR makes things too big of a pain in the rear to actually play, what's the point? Really hope they keep this in mind when making it.
