ARGH! Burning out. HELP!

Thread says it all. Never ever thought CoX burnout would happen to me. Not cancelling my account or anything, cause that's just not me. I hold no hatred at all for this game or most of the people in it. But I gotta figure out something. Maybe I'll read a book or go for a walk.

That's why I have been semi-absent and playing "that other mmo" for the past four months. I just can't bring myself to do the same old boring entry level missions anymore. The low level content is so burned into my head I swear I could do it blindfolded with the speakers off.

I've been having the same problem with burnout here. Still a great game mind you, but after 5 years (or so) my mind goes on auto-pilot most the time I play.

I've been killing time for the last year watching Dr. who and anime.
And cycling when the warm weather hit (which is on pause till summer comes back...)

there's that other superheroish MMO out there, but it's "going through the motions", so I can't recommend it at this time :P

I recommend roleplaying. Get into your characters' heads and see the world the way they do. Talk to other players as your character would.

Then sit there in the stunned silence as everybody looks at you like you're bat-scat insane.

Look at that. A full-grown woman pulling off pigtails. Her crazy is off the charts.

This. I started doing more of this and it really adds a whole new dynamic to the game. I also found that on occasion you need to take a break. Take a week or more without playing. then quickly go back to playing again and with a whole new mindset.

I was become burned out about a month ago.. took a few days without even going on the forums and then was good to go again a few days later. It happens to the best of us.

I've found that whenever I find the game getting a little ho-hum between issue releases that creating some sort of event helps keep the interest high.

It's been true (for me) that the players are what makes the game interesting first, content second.

So by running a themed TF, scheduling a little lowbie appreciation with the New Player Welcoming Night, or launching a crazy Shadow Shard Marathon it keeps me focused on what I like about the game: the company of other players and finding new ways to entertain them.

You're on the right track. Break up your gaming schedule with CoX for a while. Do the "read a book" thing. Go out and see a movie instead. Watch some boob-tube/DVDs, grab the wife (assuming you're married) and...well you get the idea.

If you can't COMPLETELY divorce yourself from the game, try this:

Log in with a specific objective (complete one mission, just follow up on your market transactions, sit and gab for a bit), then log off and do something else for a while.

I have days that I'm sitting there playing and not really having a lot of fun. Mostly it's just short-term burnout. So I gab with a few friends, finish up what I'm doing and log. I come back a day or so later and it's better.

If you have severe burnout, just take the short-term burnout suggestion and do it for a longer period of time.

Clicking on the linked image above will take you off the City of Heroes site. However, the guides will be linked back here.

I encounter this frequently.

I usually just switch it up for awhile and refrain from logging in at all for a few weeks/months.

I sometimes will get to the login screen, and i randomly click on characters, not wanting to play any of them, for about 10 minutes before I realize...its time to do something else for a while.

I started playing this game the day it came out, but my account is still only at 48-50 months I think due to several longish unsubs. The time away made me realize the things I do love about this game, and gave me time to do other things to clear my head until CoH came back into the picture.

Nowdays I limit my playing to about an hour a night two or three days a week, unless theres a new issue, or something special to do in game. That seems to keep me from burning out totally.

The hardest thing for me was when most of my global friends quit. That made it hard to find things to do in game without soloing all the time. I'm still struggling with that one.

But in summary, I think the old saying "absence makes the heart fonder" is correct in this case. Take less time in game, and you appreciate more the time you do spend there.

Cheers.

I find that when I am reaching burnout levels, playing the other side helps break the monotony.

I too dabble in that other Cryptic MMO as a change of pace on occasion.

I start up projects (or use to, now I WISH I had the time to play more). Start writing, try to create a combat system and balance it. Draw, paint, sculpt. Pick up a cook book or other "how to" type of thing and learn how to do something new.

Or, perhaps a little more dangerous, start up a different MMO. See how you like it. Try to compare it to this one (even if in most ways you can't). If you love this game for a good reason (and it's more than just that you think you do), you'll come back to it.

Try a different MMO. I bounce between Lord of the Rings Online and City of Heroes. Both have on average quarterly updates and both run seasonal events.
There is no harm in trying out different games.

When I'm burned out, I try this thing called Real Life. It's actually pretty cool!!!

Real life has little to hold my interest the same way this game does.

Same here. I actually tried to log into COH yesterday though and never could get past the loading screen so I decided it was a sign and went back to the other MMO. I'm still suffering from COH burnout though as I feel I could do the missions from 1-50 in my sleep. Maybe this weekend I'll try to get COH working again. It would be nice to see all my old friends again.

Oof...I know this feeling. Do what I did - get a job that sends you half way around the world for 3-4 weeks at a time so that when you get home your family demands a solid week of attention, take two more weeks to get all caught up with work, then play coh for like 3 days before you have to rinse and repeat.

I play the 'other' MMO still, though not as frequently as my real life friends who play there would like. I thought I would enjoy logging back in over there and playing with them, but for the first time in a while, it doesn't hold my interest like CoH does - I think it has a lot to do with the fun I have with the people I play with on a regular basis.

If you don't team a lot, or team with regular people, change it up and just invite randoms for a PUG of a few missions. Some of them can be pretty funny.

Fallout 3 worked for me. Ask your doctor if Fallout 3 is right for you.*

Side affects can include cannibalism, bloody messes, leaving grenades in others' pockets, and ghoulification.

Read a book.

Write a story.

Wash your car or your backside, whichever needs it more.

Dabble in other electronic distractions - PS3, XBox, etc.

Go to the range - firing or driving, you pick.

Then, if you want to come back, CoH will still be here, at least for the foreseeable future.

That reminds me.

I have to get the Game of the Year edition with all the DLCs so I can...

a) not have to rely on Games For Windows less than stellar system (multiple Fallout players / user accounts on our PC)
b) stop spending more points than necessary each new release
c) play the game again entirely, aiming to remain "neutral" for those pesky achievements.

For my fellow PS3 fans...

Fallout 3 indeed is one of the best games I've played in years.

Metal Gear Solid 4 is still top notch.

NCAA Football 10 and Madden 10 truly deliver.

Modern Warfare 2 is just around the corner.

Gran Turismo 5 is slated to hit shelves in Feb.

So, when you're just not in the mood for Paragon City or the shores of the Rogue Isles...
Just press the PS button.

Personally looking forward to Bayonetta, Assassin's Creed 2, and both the GoW 1&2 PS3 re-release and GoW 3
