Manga Recommends Snow Leopard with I16 (and other notes)

I'm now recommending City of Heroes Mac Edition users run it with Snow Leopard, and at least 2 gigs, preferably with 4 gigs, of memory.

This is to bypass two potential issues:

- Crash on zoning issue that seems to plague some people, but does not yet seem to affect Snow Leopard users, especially those with 2 gigs+ of memory.

- A rare issue width Leopard (10.5.8) that causes Cider not to load with an error loading "macdrv" listed in the console log. This issue is very rare and has *maybe* been noted once, but never duplicated. It has occurred with other Cider-based ports.

Also, the following issues exist both with the CURRENT live client, and with the Training Room client:

- SEMI-CRITICAL ISSUE: Saved Power Customization sets don't appear in the list EVEN AFTER YOU QUIT COH AND RELOAD IT. The costumes, however, work fine.

- Tiny avatars in Mission Architect don't animate.

- Occasional crashing due to unresolved memory allocation issue.

- Heavy lag in high-texture zones like RWZ, SG bases, and Pocket D.

- Mouse position suddenly resets, causing sudden player direction change or windows jumping around (this may be a Snow Leopard bug with 10.6, as I've seen it occur a lot less since 10.6.1).

And bugs/fixes in the Training Room client:

- Fix: 3D sound has been repaired, and operates correctly.

- Fix: Slightly decreased lag in high-population areas, such as around AE, in Atlas Park, and around the consignment market.

- Fix: Slightly better visual range in small zones such as Talos Island and Atlas Park.

- Fix: The client seems to exit much faster when it crashes, instead of appearing hung for a long period of time.

- Bug: Cursor colors are shifted, the RGB palette is reversed. This causes cursors to look funny, and dragged items to be color shifted.

- Bug: Cmd-Q does not quit the CoH client.

- New occasional crash message in console log after silent crash: [0x0-0x4e04e].com.transgaming.cityofheroes objc[1379]: task_thread failed (result 268455948).

I'm afraid it does. I meet all that criteria. Snow Leopard, 4 gigs.

Not every zoning, no. Characters that are in Pocket D's tiki room can not get past the character login screen. Those in Founders get No mapserver connection.

I need an explanation on how to get a console log.

So I thought - let's uninstall, reinstall & done.
problem 2: I uninstalled, but after reinstalling I couldn't load up CoH - when I loaded it via cider (inside the contents) it said that macdrv error.

What I did was - I tried downloading the testserver & see if I had an issue with it - guess what no issue.
But when I tried with my CoH client - the same issue would go on.

I simply deleted my CoH Preferences (inside the library(finder>name>library>preferences>coh...))

And voila suddenly my loader popped up after running it again and I could patch my game to run on my mac without the macdrv issue.

I hope this helps some people with this issue - as I'm not sure this is a fix for 100% of the cases, it just fixed it for me.
Thought some of you might be interested - still updating to snow seems best solution.

Question....WHY!?!?!?!

Why the heck would you think it a semireasonable idea to make a i16 not work with Tiger when we are in an economic crisis? You are making people that most likely already paid to play your game pay MORE money for something that most people don't have to. Its almost discrimitory, and quite honestly poor planning. I will not be surprised if you lose many veterans with Macs that can't afford to upgrade. Not that you'd might care...i16 is brilliant in everyother respect, and you are most likely going to gain more clients then lose......

Still, show some respect to your veteran players...please....

How is it discriminatory to make the product more playable by using the latest technology? There's a reason why OSs get updated and redeveloped... to make the software work better with the hardware.

Tiger is two revisions behind... it hasn't had any major updates since 2007, just security patches. Mac moved on, it make sense that CoH would also, since it would certainly be more effort than worth to keep the game backwards compatible with an OS that hasn't been updated for over two years.

That's a red herring. They want the game to run better; ergo, they need the OS to meet certain requirements. Frankly I wouldn't be surprised if the Windows requirements were updated for GR. But this is no worse than asking Windows users to have SP2 or SP3 installed.

Also, Mac users who are running Leopard can upgrade to Snow Leopard for $30... not necessarily bank-breaking, even in this "economic crisis", IMHO.

Leopard and Snow Leopard contain new graphics technology that Tiger lacks, and Cider (the core of the CoH Mac client) made use of it with this latest revision. That's why Leopard or Snow Leopard are required.

I personally recommended Snow Leopard because of unconfirmed rare issues that seem to occur with Leopard but not Snow Leopard.

If you're really sure you want to try using Tiger, send me a PM and I'll tell you how to work around the restriction and try it. I should warn you though, don't be upset when it likely doesn't work properly.

I've got the "jumping mouse" problem running Leopard as of the most recent update, and deleting my preferences did not help.

Posted

The preference thingy was only for macdrv - not for mousesettings.

update: as of now I got osx 10.6.1 - but the jumpy mouse issue, so many mac users got with the last update, hasn't been resolved sadly enough

tried to log in this morning after the patch and now coh won't run with my leopard [10.5.6].

I haven't found there to be any difference between Leopard and Snow Leopard. The "Loading" screen still takes forever, and that is my biggest issue. Base lag, and Pocket D lag, still present. But i have never, or very rarely had the problems others report.

1. I would like to apologize for any real harshness on my last post. I was EXTREMELY ticked off when I wrote it

2. From what I have gathered....upgrading from Leopard to Snow Leopard doesn't really solve much......is this true? Granted I have Tiger....but still.....

Didn't solve my mouse issues

I fixed the macdrv on leopard 10.5.8 - so there's a workaround

I never had the crashing issue (thank god) - so can't comment here.

*still begging for a fix - spent 6 mins clicking till I finally managed to click train up to next level, guess what went RWZ next & tried accepting starting mish there *

Edit: got reply from NCSoft their reply: "Does the problem persist when you run this in windowed mode?"
no real help there yet

If your Mac has Intel GMA video you're going to have problems clicking things until a fix comes along.

Macs with nVidia video work great. I had it tested with an nVidia 8600, 9400, and 9600 so far.

All except the nVidia 8600 were using Snow Leopard (the 8600 was using Leopard 10.5.8).

dragged out my mac, playing COX on it for the first time since closed beta, and it won't work at ALL.

had to go out and buy the upgrade for snow leopard ($28) because somehow i missed the note that it won't work with Tiger.

I've updated everything, ran software updates, and everything's current. Obviously, I can use the internet, otherwise I wouldn't be posting this.

Before, when I still had Tiger, it said "unable to work with this version"

Now that I have snow leopard, the splash screen won't even LOAD. It's running, but nothing shows up...NOTHING. And then I have to do a force quit.

I've uninstalled and reinstalled what feels like 50,000 times. Downloaded from the main page, and from the "my account page" and IT STILL WON'T LOAD.

*is frustrated and would rather be watching the football game than trying to figure out why COX won't work on a mac*

basically, if you see a miki on Triumph, it's probably cute and it's probably me.

Huge thanks to cuppamanga and all the folks in the mac help forum for prolonging my borrowed time on this game.

This affects me and I'm wondering if there is a workaround?

I've seen it on my Mac Mini for sure (the new Mac Mini). I run OS X Snow Leopard (Server version but with all the server stuff disabled) with 2.66 core 2 duo and 4 gb of ram and an nvidia geforce 320m.

I dont have the issue on my iMac which is running Leopard, but unfortunately I *just* committed to upgrading it to Snow Leopard when I happened to decide to look in the Mac forums here and I saw this.

So I'm suddenly worried I wont be able to do stuff in the RWZ anymore. Guess I'll know in a half hour or so.

Thanks,

Lewis

The lag in the RWZ is pretty much only in the base. Once you're out in the zone, it's like like any other outdoor zone.
