Aion

So I've been trying to find out if anyone else other than Des, Umbriel, and I will be playing Aion from Victory. We've been playing in the closed betas with a group of people that are mostly CoH and Guild Wars people, but we are the only ones from Victory. The maturity level of the people in that group seems to be wide and varied, but mostly lacking in comparison to our Victory community.

Anyone else planning on playing Aion?

No I'm not. So you're safe.

Oh, and you're welcome.

Hubby has been playing it and loving it. Probably going to be his main game.

I've been debating whether or not to play this, still on the fence. The price of certain recipes to complete my latest project is quickly turning me off. Is it still in closed beta?

Closed Beta is over, open beta starts soon I think.

Can anyone join the open beta, or how does it work? I can't really figure stuff out from their site. I'm willing to see what Aion and CO are like, just to put things in perspective, but that's curiousity (which means I ain't payin'! Heh), so I'd need to get in open beta or a trial if they ever have them.

I've found reading up about MMOs just doesn't fly, as they all start sounding and looking the same, in all honesty. Hence the want to play them.

Your resident AP bum crew is heading to Aion. Me, Aquablades, Chan, TC, Misie, Chained Ice, hopefully Dyn.

Is it one of those open betas where you have to buy the game before they let you in the beta? CO is doing that, which is a red flag to me since it suggests that they think the beta might turn off potential customers.

Whatever you guys do or stick with, all I ask is that you continue the blame tradition in these other avenues.

It'll make even less sense so far out of context that it will be even more awesome/stupid/giggle worthy. And yes, I would not be surprised to see it posted in game reviews in the not-too-distant-future.

If that never happens, well, ironically, we will know the reason for it

Presently, the details of Aion Open Beta are unknown. I got into Closed Beta 3 via File Planet account. I liked it enough pre-order which got me into all the betas that followed.

I have yet to see any dates for Open Beta or how keys are obtained. Aion launches in the US on Sept. 22 so Open beta would have to be fairly soon.

OH, here are some screenies.

Nope, but I will be in CO.

Kong, you have to have a pre-order code to get into the (not so) open beta, but that doesn't mean you have to buy the game in the end.

I've already decided I don't want to do another Isos, and that's the only time I play CoX as it is so I'll probably stop my sub here.

I'm finishing this Isos, but after that it'll be "so long, and thanks for all the fish."

Can I have your stuff? I need a full set of Armageddon and Hetacomb, to complete my latest project.

P.S. Why can't I find the smiley with the tongue sticking out?

I don't really have much to leave anyone, sorry. There are no IOs worth giving away, and you can have whatever inf is on my Iso when I reach 50. But if you expect me to log in and out of characters to pool the inf, forget that.

And I was wrong about the open beta. Apparently they were giving away keys if you registered at Fileplanet to get the download. If that's unlimited or what, I don't know.

Not seeing anything for codes on Fileplanet for either game, right now.

Sorry to see you go, NancY.

I really hope GR has a LOT of content... I think that's about the biggest thing CO has going for it against CoX, since it's all new stuff.

I've had it preordered for awhile now. Haven't been in the closed beta *too* much lately, I don't want to get sick of it. I hope to see some familiar faces at launch.

New stuff... 5 total zones. The Millennium City Zone is supposed to be huge, but still...

Right now, CoX is definitely the better game. CO has the novelty going for it, and some really cool travel powers, but that's about it... I think I16 will probably do power customization better as well, which is sad.

I'm on the fence about going Lifetime with the game currently, but I'm playing the Open Beta as much as possible to see if I can play it over the long haul.

The way CO handles levelups sounds interesting, with players getting the ability to add their own Procs to powers and level up powers individually. That said, I've only heard generalities about it, it may be as restricted as the Slot/IO system CoH already has, which would be disappointing.

I've also heard that CO is far less focused on "classes", with characters being able to semi-specialize in anything (like grabbing a random heal to help out with teaming) at the expense of just losing a few percentage off of your blasts. Dunno if this is true. Apparently a side effect is that it's very solo friendly, with no characters getting stuck in the "painful to solo" category, but also never really encourages teaming at all. The same complaint was leveled at CoH back in the day though (especially from ex-Everquest players that aren't having fun unless the game is randomly punishing them), and it didn't really hurt the game.

Each power has Ranks that you have to take in order, but then there are buffs on the side, but each power has their own set. For example, I chose a perk for my Two-gun Mojo power that lets me do more damage the closer I am to the target. For the Might (Super strength) endurance-builder there was a perk to do more damage to stunned enemies, etc. You get the idea.

No classes to speak of, but some sets really lend themselves to support while others are strictly DPS/Self-Defense. Gadgeteer, Force, Sorcery, are some supports sets while Munitions, Might, Martial Arts, Single Sword, Dual Sword would be more straightforward.

Des said in another thread that Aion is rather PvP oriented the farther you go, which worries me. In my experience, PvP is rarely balanced in any game (even FPS games suffer from this), and I'd rather not be unable to advance in an MMO because the class I chose is the current whipping boy in the game's setup. I'm not sure what classes I'd want to play in Aion (or if you can have many alts in-game), but I know I'd want to be able to play melee classes, who sound like they are up a creek right now in PvP for Aion.

I know most of us are over the hurdle, but MMO's do have a bigger entry fee than other games, especially if they keep adding stuff with fees attached and still charge a monthly fee. It's hard to justify investing that much in a game unless you know you're going to be around for awhile to enjoy it. I was only able justify getting a booster pack in CoX after a LONG time because we had enough cash and I knew I'd be playing the game enough to make it worth it.

Anyway, that's why I hope both games have some kind of free trial... I want to know what I'm getting into with any game, but especially an MMO.

I checked the webpage out too and this got me a bit turned off too. I have nothing against PvP (and still consider it a lot of fun).
But if advancement depends on it, I just can't get into that any more. Before coming here, I spent quite a while in DAoC. I loved the RvR and had a regular group that use to storm keeps and bash Albs each evening (sigh, good times...). Anyhow, if I didn't want to RvR one night, I didn't have too enter the RvR zones. It is a little different with CoH in that you never, ever once are required to step in the Arena or PvP zone in order to advance or at least stay on the "same level" as the other players. For now, only the PvP IOs are the only thing you get from PvP that can set you apart from other players.

This makes me wonder if there will be raids in order to advance up. The thing that did me in for DAoC was the Trials of Atlantis and those awfully long raids for realm ranks. Some I heard took longer than Dr Q and require a large amount of players. And once people went through those, there wasn't much chance, if ever, to repeat it if you missed it. In short, I couldn't play any more because I would be decimated seconds by players that are all "ranked up".

Eh, I am rambling now and hope that those trying it out/playing it have fun! Hope to see you pop in once in a while.

Based on quotes from the development team, PVP is not required to advance in the game. It is very PVP oriented, but in the patch that will be played in live release there should be plenty of PVE to do. According to the devs you will be able to PVE from 1-50. Whether this is accurate or not, no one really knows at this point unless they are playing the asian beta version of the game, which is already in 1.5.

Also, being that the game has a very strong PVP backbone, the PVP seems to be fairly balanced. The biggest problem I have with the PVP aspect is there is no way to tell what level an opposing person is until you engage them. If you see big damage numbers, they are lower level than you, if you see small ones, you're pretty much dead. That part of the system worries me abit. I'm not a big PVP player in City because I felt the introduction of it caused too many problems in the game. However in games that are built with it in mind, it could be fun.

It has been fun to play thus far for me. I didn't feel like I was wasting my time as I felt in EQ1 or EQ2. The graphics are very well done. The game play feels polished. All in all my experience has been fairly good with the exception of the L20 guy camping the arena quest contact inside the arena that was just killing people 10 levels lower than him just to be an as$.

Okay... that's bad design. I hate, hate, hate that jerks in WoW can run around doing this to people (at least they used to). It might make it more artificial, but PvP really needs to be separated out more for me to like it (separation seems okay to me in CoX). I think what really made me quit WoW (though I was already kind of fed up with it after falling behind my friends I was playing with) was when I got ganked for the 5th time while trying to complete PvE content. Yes, I was on a PvP server, so I knew what I was in for, but I just hated that I couldn't get anything done in PvE without a bunch of friends, and that all the PvP was really "hey, there's a Horde wizard over there... I'll gank him after he's tired and almost dead from fighting a bunch of monsters." Seriously. I did fine in PvP when I had at least a third of my health to start, but I was constantly ganked at almost death by Alliance pricks. It got old, fast.

Also, I'm basing what I said off of Des... he said something to the effect that the devs there say you should be able to level up in PvE, but that the game doesn't testify to that (sorry if I misquoted you, Des, but I thought that's what you said in the Discussion section). Hopefully not, as it does look somewhat interesting (though I'm not keen on the Japanese RPG look of the character skins... that look is part of why I haven't really tried any of the Final Fantasy games lately), but I just was running with what I heard.

Thanks Toril for the explanation.

Weird that it doesn't give level. DAoC used the conning system like it did for mobs (and CoH gray vs. purple, etc.).
