I missed the event coordinator yesterday, but was able to speak to someone who was familiar with the banquet menus today. Here's the $/person for the 3 dinner banquet menus:
Classico - $22.95 - choose 3 items & 1 dessert, incl soft drinks, coffee & tea
Supremo - $27.95 - choose 4 items & 1 dessert, incl soft drinks, coffee & tea
Glorioso - $35.95 - choose 10 items & 2 desserts, incl soft drinks, coffee & tea
Link to Buca di Beppo (apparently I can't get it to link directly to the banquet menu.)
I think those are very reasonable prices for the amount of food you get. For my birthday last year, it cost 5 of us over $200.00 to have dinner at Buca. We had one salad, to entrees, and one dessert. So for less than that, we can have 10 items and 2 desserts. I think that's a good deal.

It may be that you can't link directly to the menu since it is based off of the choices of State and City. Hard to tell, but I'm going to test something and then check it on my other computer after posting.
And yes, the prices become very reasonable per person.
EDIT: Well, my link goes directly to the Banquet Menu, so I'm not sure what you were doing wrong Red. Maybe it has something to do with my superior computer skillz.
If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.
Black Pebble is my new hero.
Okay, I will have to bring my digital camera to this, and have hubby doing his Steve Irwin impression here as well as part of the larger HeroCon 2009 documentary.
BTW, T_J, just to warn you... he's talking about having you do something weird for this... just smile and go with it.

I will be there and whatever we do Friday night I am down for. So all the items are good as long as I don't get mushrroms or flaked fish, I'm allergic. But having gone to Bucca for many years now, yes it is above average on price. Might I suggest we three different restaurant options varying on price? I agree with what many have said here about the economy and their personal finances. For many, this will be a bit of a struggle to not only get to, but afford and justify to family for what many perceive as just a game. I would like everyone to enjoy the weekend without the stress of worrying how their finances are going to be stressed by coming.
Also, in preperation for what is likely to come, we should try and find a discount liqour and a grocery store nearby, this will be much cheaper than the hotel prices if someone wants a "pop" or their toothpaste exploded all over their cape.
In defense of Mardun, and I hope you are that awesome BS scrap on justice I teamed with way back, $1500 dollars is way too much. I'm sure there are ways to decrease that amount through discounts and early reservations, but if it is too much of a burden for you, then don't. It is more important that you can afford to stay in the game than come to this event. HMMMM.... Maybe there is a way for NCNC to simulcast or live broadcast the dinner event or something?
On a side note Mardun, we here in the SF bay area are really starting to develop a good crew of players that meet somewhat regularly, I'm sure there are a lot of players in your area too that you can get together with. Make you own mini-con or meet and greet at some restaurant/bar, those are much more affordable. Just pops from the peanut gallery...
So dinner questions to be answered:
1) You coming? Yes, indeed.
1a) If yes, banquet menu ok? Banquet menu works for me.
1a1) If yes, which banquet items appeal? Spaghetti w/meatballs, Chicken w/Lemon, Sausage, Chocolate cake or cheesecake.
1a2) If no, what do you propose we do instead? hmm
1b) If no, are you weenie-ing out because you THINK you can't afford it? Nope
1b1) Does the wording of my question above change your answer? Nope
1d) If no, what the heck is wrong with you?
2) Anything we MUST have (even if not on the banquet menu)? Can't think of anything myself.
3) Preferred dining date/time? Same schedule as last time works.
Might I suggest we three different restaurant options varying on price?

Remember, this is an event where it's likely 30-50 or more people will show up; it's not the same as arranging a night out with a few friends. Coordinating this kind of thing to go off without a hitch takes a large amount of time and effort. It's to Red Gren's immense credit he makes it sound so very easy. It's a job people get paid very well to do and he's doing it all just because he really wants to have a great time and make sure everyone else does, too. What Red pulled off last year was Absolutely Amazing and I can't express enough appreciation for Red and others who are putting both the official and unofficial Hero Con events together for us.
If you want to throw out different suggestions, I think we're open to that, but it means you're going to need to be very specific and provide names and details, just as Red has. Again, while this is friends getting together, it's not just a few people. It may seem informal, but many formal arrangements have to be made. This job requires all the effort of an Event Coordinator. Once someone starts, if you want to make changes, it's not something you can do easily or at the last minute. And in terms of events, the last minute is not the same as the last minute of a few friends. When making arrangements to bring a group of 50 people to any one restaurant, the plans need to be made months in advance.
Remember also that Red is concerned about how many people may feel unable to participate because of cost. If that number of people is big enough, we may need to change plans. If it's small, then consider that maybe you can't find one person to cover your whole dinner, but maybe you can find several friends willing to pitch in and help you out. People who may not be able to cover an entire extra meal may be able to kick in $5 for someone else.

I haven't been out by the hotel to verify this, but according to Google Maps, there's a PW supermarket (2001 Gateway Pl #220W, San Jose) across the street from the hotel (the reason I'm concerned is that the marker is in the street.) If this is true, this should take care of both those needs (even though PW wouldn't be a discount liquor store.) Also of note, there's a CostCo (1601 Coleman Ave, Santa Clara) on the other side of the airport from the hotel. Y'know... just in case you need industrial-sized quantities of your favorite beverages & snacks...

1) You coming? YES!
1a) If yes, banquet menu ok? Yes.
1a1) If yes, which banquet items appeal? Supremo/Glorioso lists look great to me.
1a2) If no, what do you propose we do instead? We could always order a few pizzas and eat them in your room. I promise not to touch the mini-bar.
1b) If no, are you weenie-ing out because you THINK you can't afford it? I don't weenie-out... I RSVP with Regrets. However, see my answer to 1).
1b1) Does the wording of my question above change your answer? No.
1d) If no, what the heck is wrong with you? I plan on being hungry that Friday evening, so Buca is as good as anything else I can think of to have for dinner with friends.
2) Anything we MUST have (even if not on the banquet menu)? Extra Napkins and Flair... and perhaps some Utensils.
(I figure we might have some leeway in this regard as omissions cost the same as some included items.)
3) Preferred dining date/time? My planned default is Friday Oct 23, 5:30pm which will hopefully allow us to dine without rushing to get to whatever Niv might be putting together on Friday. The date and time is fine with me. Would like to share a cab if I can't hitch a ride (My phone is GPS enabled, and I can bring a Garmin as a backup.

Do they automatically add an extra 18% gratuity to the bill for banquets? I think that's standard practice. (It's also standard practice for everyone to forget that until the very end and 3/4 of the people have paid and left, so I thought I'd bring it up now.) If so, all those prices will be +18% unless you already included it.
|
The prices listed were the prices quoted, no mention of an included gratuity in the quote.
My answers inline...
So dinner questions to be answered:
1) You coming? [Kitten Basket] Oh yes. 1a) If yes, banquet menu ok? [Kitten Basket] Yes 1a1) If yes, which banquet items appeal? [Kitten Basket] Supremo or Glorioso (preferably Supremo?) 1a2) If no, what do you propose we do instead? 1b) If no, are you weenie-ing out because you THINK you can't afford it? 1b1) Does the wording of my question above change your answer? 1d) If no, what the heck is wrong with you? [Kitten Basket] I'm not answering these questions because I'm going. 2) Anything we MUST have (even if not on the banquet menu)? (I figure we might have some leeway in this regard as omissions cost the same as some included items.) [Kitten Basket] Tiramisu. And I have an unsatisfied dessert war with Dark_Respite to be addressed. 3) Preferred dining date/time? My planned default is Friday Oct 23, 5:30pm which will hopefully allow us to dine without rushing to get to whatever Niv might be putting together on Friday [Kitten Basket] Works for me. |
1) You coming?
Yuppers! And I'm bringing my dad again as well!
1a) If yes, banquet menu ok?
I don't see why not.
1a1) If yes, which banquet items appeal?
Supremo seems to be a good balance of flexibility and price, though I'd be willing to upgrade to Glorioso if the occasion calls for it.
1a2) If no, what do you propose we do instead?
Sushi went so brilliantly last year, I wouldn't mind a repeat.
1b) If no, are you weenie-ing out because you THINK you can't afford it?
Not only can I afford it, I insist, as I did last year, to cover the costs of at least myself and my guest plus gratuity.
1b1) Does the wording of my question above change your answer?
Hehehe, nah.
1b2) If no, what the heck is wrong with you?
That's what *I* wanna know!
2) Anything we MUST have (even if not on the banquet menu)?
(I figure we might have some leeway in this regard as omissions cost the same as some included items.)
Frankly, even after looking over the menu a few times, there's nothing that really springs to mind. I think the banquet will cover it quite nicely. Although, I do plan to visit the Buca we have locally here in Phoenix to see how it is, and if there's anything I see there that we'll just *have* to include, I'll be sure to drop you a line about it.
3) Preferred dining date/time? My planned default is Friday Oct 23, 5:30pm which will hopefully allow us to dine without rushing to get to whatever Niv might be putting together on Friday.
Sounds fantastic! Let's mangia!
I haven't posted on here in years. I had to update all my settings XD
I'll be there depending on my flight. I should be getting in around 2pm, so hopefully there won't be any delays. So count me in, I'm up for anything. We have a Buca near me and I like their food.
Also, Kyth is flying up with me, so count him in as well.

Either way include us (Kyth and Chloe) as we'll do all we can to make a 5:30pm dinner. Seems like a good time seeing how will-call badge pick-up starts at 6pm.
So dinner questions to be answered:
1) You coming? YES! Kyth plus one since I'll be side-kicking Chloe.
1a) If yes, banquet menu ok? Banquet looks good. Chloe knows all about Bucca appparently and sounds like a great place to go.
1a1) If yes, which banquet items appeal? Supremo or Glorioso both sound great. I prefer the Glorioso to give everyone more selection buuut Supremo is great too for those watching their budget. So either or. =)
1a2) If no, what do you propose we do instead? We're staying at the Double Tree where HeroCon is at so anything close by would be perfect. We'll either hitch a ride and just grab a cab. If anything, maybe check with the sushi/sake bar in the hotel. Might want to ask if they give a discount with lots of use being hotel guests as well as convention attendees.
1b) If no, are you weenie-ing out because you THINK you can't afford it? Weenie-ing out? Puh-lease... blappers never say... umm, well we do say die, but it sure as heck doesn't stop us for charging right back in.
1b1) Does the wording of my question above change your answer? Yes because I'm spiteful like that. >_>
1b2) If no, what the heck is wrong with you? Maybe it did and maybe it didn't. I refuse to give you the satisfaction. ;p
2) Anything we MUST have (even if not on the banquet menu)?
(I figure we might have some leeway in this regard as omissions cost the same as some included items.) Nothing we MUST have... I'm pretty laid back with whatever. =)
3) Preferred dining date/time? Friday @ 5:30pm is fine by me. Like I said before, just a matter of what flight we lockdown but definitely will keep the 5:30 time in mind. =)

--I'd feel more comfortable knowing the cost per person before deciding. I know your own generosity seemingly knows no bounds, but I also know that for some people, the ability to take advantage of such generosity knows no limits. I'd like the cost to be within reason for everyone, even if some people need help covering. Some people don't like to let anyone else cover their costs, especially if they think something is expensive. Keeping the cost per person down would help people feel more comfortable with allowing someone else to cover them if they need it.
