Discussion - Positron Discusses Issue 16 on MMORPG.com!
Yeah, I'm really starting to wonder what ELSE is coming in another year that they can't even hint about right now. Hmmm....
I call total merger to a SERVERLESS SYSTEM!!!!! You heard it here first folks! |
Let them work on something... you know... good.
To that end, every character in the game will receive a free Tailor session for every costume slot they have unlocked, when Issue 16 is released on the Live servers this summer/fall. This is our special thanks to our players for never giving up on suggesting the feature to us, no matter how "impossible" we might have said it was to do in the past. |
/Throws another 'Webslinger/grappling hook, nao!!' suggestion into the box...
August 31, 2012. A Day that will Live in Infamy. Or Information. Possibly Influence. Well, Inf, anyway. Thank you, Paragon Studios, for what you did, and the enjoyment and camaraderie you brought.
This is houtex, aka Mike, signing off the forums. G'night all. - 10/26/2012
Well... perhaps I was premature about that whole 'signing off' thing... - 11-9-2012
dammit, i already spend two hours working on costumes! now im going to spend another couple hours just on power customization. not like i didnt ask for this, but i need to see the outside world eventually!
wait...ill play by a window!
And probably we won't see Going Rogue until it's time for DCUO to release.

And CO is so bad that CoH doesn't need to worry about it in the long run. I predict that one will be dead in the water before it hits its one year anniversary unless they revisit some underlying gameplay mechanics. Trying to lure away CoH customers by offering them almost the same stuff they get 'at home' but with a worse game and a setting that's been completely mutilated from its roots is an effort in silliness.
Which means I really believe the main motivation was that it was asked for and that it was a logical option to have in such a customizable game.
Winston Churchill
It's a shame CO doesn't let players use the Champions ruleset to make their own powers.
Mind you, I've played Champions...so I know just how much you can abuse the system.
@Nameless Hero, Insane Sword-wielding Video Game Hero - Also a character in CoH
Yukie Bikouchi, Halfway Lost, and others
Many thanks to the dev team, as so many have said. The hard work is most definitely appreciated. The next year in CoH is going to be just an utterly fantastic one.
Virtue:
Miserya - 50 EM/ELA Brute (Perma-shelved)
Adriana Rayne - 42 Katana/Dark Scrapper
Cyberpulse - 26 Super Strength/Willpower Brute
Steel Heart - 24 Invuln/Super Strength Tanker
Arc #40529 : The Furies of the Earth
I think it is a brilliant stealth-strike right before the release of Champions Online. "Powers customization" was one of the few things that Champions Online could offer that CoX wasn't.
Champions Online doesn't interest me at all any more. This is quite sad because I'm a fan of Champions the RPG's game mechanics - which aren't in Champions Online. Micro-transactions, few server slots, signature-characters that were always considered a joke by the people I gamed with, etc. are all reasons that I no longer even have interest in playing Champions Online as a free trial.
Like I said. It is sad.
I bought CoH as soon as I could when it came out - all along wishing it was Champions the RPG brought to the online-gaming environment. I made many of my Champions characters here in the City. I even made/assembled a new computer just so I could play CoH.
Yeah, I had the game months before I could play it. The book was tattered and torn before I even had the parts to build the new computer because I was figuring out how to make the characters I wanted to play. I made at least 2 characters on every server within the first week if not the first couple of days.
And the City hasn't let me down. It isn't Champions the RPG game mechanics either, but it is what it is ...and it is constantly evolving and improving. I have to give the DEVs a lot of credit on giving us more content for free than was in the box that I bought those 5+ years ago.
Thanks a lot, DEVs, for all the great work that you have put into this game over the years.
"Power Customization" will be fun to tweak, and I do think it will take CoX a couple notches higher versus the competition that it will have soon.

I'd hate to see how many of my alts this might "kill off". I have several characters that I play on various servers - aka I use the same name on various servers.
I'm sure if it didn't "kill them off", it would at least mean that all but one of them would need to be renamed.
Not fun for me.
On the plus side of this debate, it would give a much larger pool of people to team with. This might be beneficial to PvPr's who seem to be few in number and spread across various servers.
On the negative side, the flavor of the various servers would be lost. I do think there are definite differences of the various servers and the players that play on each.
I'm sure it is clear what my stance would be in regards to the 5+ instances of Atlas and the high level characters crowding into all of them.
I'd make more comments on this, but the would be only speculation and I don't know for sure about the technological limitations in regards to a server-less system. However, I can think of some other things that may or may not turn out to be real issues in regards to implementing this kind of system change.
When I thought of Power Customisation, I never ever considered being able to modify each individual power - just the whole set together at once. Finally being given this option, and then being given more than I could ever have expected along with it, is a great thing. It is things like this that convince me that CoX will long be the only MMO in its class.
As far as going serverless, I'd go for a more quasi-serverless system before that. Keeps the servers either as physical entities, or as virtual servers on a single machine if they go that way. Allow transfer between servers to be as easy as stepping though a portal ( the in game explanation being the different servers are alternate worlds ), which would append the words "of servername" to your character as long as you are there. So instead of having to change names you'd be "Doomslash of Virtue" while on Guardian, say. This would hopefully preserve the respective server cultures, while at the same time allowing the advantages of going serverless. Plus, they could then allow the servers to diverge in classic alternate universe style; add changes to some and not others, have events running at different times on different servers and so on.

Food for thought, stuff like this has been in the mix for a long time.
All that is planned fails. All that is born dies.
All that is built crumbles. This will always be true.
But memories remain, And that is beautiful.
Internally, the different servers are called Shards (Open up yout Global Friends and expand the information to see what server you're on... It's right there) This does already give some in-game explanation for in-character talk of happenings on other servers. The servers are each different parallel realities that are VERY close together, as opposed to the Warrior Earth Shard or the Shadow Shard...

Thanks, Dev Team!
I also hope the playerbase takes away the other lesson that this situation teaches: even if they think your idea in the Suggestions Form is THE AWESOME and start implimenting today, it will be a year before you see it, so chill with the whole impatience thing
Story Arcs I created:
Every Rose: (#17702) Villainous vs Legacy Chain. Forget Arachnos, join the CoT!
Cosplay Madness!: (#3643) Neutral vs Custom Foes. Heroes at a pop culture convention!
Kiss Hello Goodbye: (#156389) Heroic vs Custom Foes. Film Noir/Hardboiled detective adventure!
Thanks, Dev Team!

And even if they say, your idea can't be done, it might be already in the works.

I don't agree with the articles Title.
If Power customization is "Overcoming the Impossible." What will the article title read once they decide to finally tackle the issues with PvP? "Attempting the impossible?" |
Might as well, they can't ***** it up anymore than they have.
Maybe they'll remove PVP all together in Issue 17: No Looking Back

Too Funny.

Just want to add my voice to the chorus of appreciation for Power Customization. This is something I've been wanting for a long time (well part of what I've been wanting anyway... there's still a lot more that can be done down this path), and it's nice to see it happening.
I think we would have eventually gotten this regardless of the Champions release, but you can't deny that it's just good sense to release it at this time in order to "step up their game" as the competition is coming into the market. CO took a few turns that lead it down a direction I would rather it hadn't gone... But it's still a competently made game so far, and I'm hoping that it has a plenty of success through the years, giving it a chance to truly measure up against CoH. Hopefully both (and DCUO) will prove very successful over the years, and the competition will inspire all the respective teams to push harder for being the "best".
Dear NCsoft, if you go through with this shutdown you've guaranteed you'll not see another dime from me on any project you put out, ever.

I can't wait for this to go live- I've got lots of existing characters who will benefit from this, big time. And a couple of new characters who are gonna get made. The look of spines has been such a turnoff that I never used it for more than two levels. Now that's gonna change. And electric melee and armour? Sweet!
