Unnecessary Censorship?

So, understandably, some words should be censored...But this just seems like it's overdoing it.

Why is I-d-i-o-t censored?

It was kinda wierd, looking in the Virtue section an seeing "An *****'s Guide to RP" stickied. It's really not that offensive of a word, and as seen above, has non-offensive application. I just find this to be rather odd, and not really necessary.

Makes me wonder just what else was censored.

Note 1: "Moron" is apparently less offensive...

Note 2: Tested this one for kicks. Out of the "George Carlin Seven", six are censored. You can find the one not censored on your own...

As I understand it the game's word filter is based on the filters used from NCSoft's more Korean oriented titles so that probably explains why seemingly mild words are censored for weird reasons there.

As to why words like that are censored in the forums who knows...

I'm one of those types of people who wish there was no censorship of words like this at all. It's not that I would spout off all sorts of profanities if I could, it's just the principle of the thing. I fundamentally hate arbitrary limitations.

I know people would counter that with things like, "But we've got to keep children safe from naughty words" or whatever. Doesn't mean I have to like it.

You know.. When your language filter interferes with the character names in the game, it might be wise to review said filter.

In game, I got a kick during an RP bull session when someone mentioned their character graduating with honors. Apparently some Latin conjunctions are offensive. Summa *** laude...

*sigh* When it came up as censored, it was sort of like having an obnoxious fourteen year old in the room interjecting "heh heh, durrr... you said ***! hurr!" None of us had that on our mind till the censor interjected. Someday, someone will program a contextual censoring engine. Till then, we get goofy garbage like this.

Edit: Sweet. The forums don't like Latin either!

I find the in-game censor to be highly entertaining. It censors very strange things, some of which aren't even close to offensive to anyone I can think of, while totally ignoring even more common synonyms.

What if the censor filter REALLY broke down? What if it started just randomly censoring words in hero names, villain names or the like? You wouldn't know what the real word was supposed to be.. but if someone felt the need to censor it... well... there HAD to have been a reason right?

I always thought that since this game is rated T for Teen, the word filter should add some profanity to every sentence you type. If I had talked the way these dang whippersnappers today do when I was their age.....

I'm reminded of the WoW forums, which go to the extreme of censoring words within longer words.

For example, grape (small round fruit) becomes g!$%#. And you also can't talk (successfully) about the several magic cloaks in the game whose names begin with Drape.
