non-English (or American) speaking servers?

There's been the odd discussion on the EU forums about what server to pick if you weren't an English speaker. Obviously we have French and German speaking servers, but what about the other thousand languages in the world?

Now that we're all on the same forum I'm interested in hearing the thoughts of the wider CoH/CoV community. Obviously, everyone would probably prefer a server filled with other players who speak the same language, but are there any other vocal minorities who would benefit from their own dedicated server?

I'm sure there are a few Canadian players who'd quite like a move over to the French speaking server (forgive my memory of what the other EU servers are called please) if they could get a decent connection to them.

The other one I was thinking might be quite a popular idea is a Spanish speaking server. I know the US has a fairly large Latin population, and there's bound to be a percentage of them playing City Of...I might be making a redundant suggestion here, maybe there's already an unofficial Spanish server? But if there isn't and then one became available, would it be warmly received?

Please discuss and feel free to add your own suggestions.

@craggy see me on Union for TFs, SFs (please!) or just some good ol fashioned teaming.

It's always kinda puzzled me as to why there wasn't a Spanish server, at least on the US cluster...

Spanish?

I think there's about 3-4 Portuguese players around (including me). We don't need a separate server, a team will do us just fine.

A Spanish server would be by far and away the most useful - it'd work for both Euro and American players, as well as South Americans.I've also heard that Italians and Portuguese can understand Spanish quite well, especially when it's written down.

The only other language I know well enough to communicate in other than a couple of random phrases is sign language...

Well, for the european part, it is still Germany and France (or southern belgium) having often the biggest population of people and both languages are often learned at school. Spanish often is optional, portugees even less and i never seen itialian at any school i've been

Quite alot of games released in europa always had a german/french server, or like WoW, certain countries 'claimed' the server as theirs (dutchbane for example). Also Guildwars had german and french channels.

I only know 1 game that has a dutch client, maple story, but probably we get around englishwise so well, we dont really need our own server.

I personaly dont like these language servers, it eventualy creates a barrier and in case of CoH its even worse due the whole client becomes <language>. (imho that should be optional).

I am a Canadian playing on a US server, and even if French is my native tongue, I would not really care for a transfer to Vigilance.

I have nothing against my French collegues, but like most of my fellow Quebec gamers, I am quite fluent in English and used to playing "dans la langue de Shakespeare" as most gaming material over here is cheaper in English than in French.

Also the 4-5 hours difference between Quebec and France might be a problem...

Nonetheless, I agree than a Spanish-language server could be a good idea. Now, on which side of the Atlantic should it be located?

We had an exchange student from Italy stay with us for a year. And one of our family friends (from Venezuela) had her family come into town once, and they came to our house one night for dinner. Our italian student and her father got into an animated discussion about futbol (not football), each speaking their native language. (Neither spoke the other's language, and her father's English was very poor)

It was hilarious to watch, especially if you understood at least one of the languages.

This thread reminds me of one of the quotes from the book 776 of the Stupidest Things Ever Said. It always makes me laugh:

"If English was good enough for Jesus Christ, it's good enough for me."

It's so easy to say, "Why doesn't everyone just speak English?" I remember staying with a family in Germany one summer, and I was teaching their older son some English slang. Their younger (5 year old) son asked, "Why doesn't everyone didn't just speak German?" The mother said, "Well, we tried that about 50 years ago. It didn't work."

Hmmm... wait... I only know two other brazillians in the game that arent a$$¨#¨%.

Anyone from Africa to join us, portuguese-speaking heros and heroines?

What about an Eskimo server? There's only 150,000 of us left.

Yes. I'm an Eskimo. I don't know how many there are living in Georgia, but there's at least 2, me and mom.

We're pretty rare anymore.

How did you get on the other end of the country like that? No wonder you're rare there. I lived in Georgia for over 10 years, and I never saw one of you the whole time.

Having just made a quick web search, Spain's population is around 40m; so, yeah, there may be more Spanish speakers in the US than in Spain. There are easily more in the New World as a whole than in Europe.

Pretty easy. Mom moved to Ohio from Nome when she was 8 when Grandma got remarried. Grew up in Ohio, met dad, had me, and we moved to California so dad could get a job he was after. Moved to Georgia so he could keep the job and be promoted to middle management.

Sure, I'm only half-Eskimo, but I don't look half. I guess mom's genes were dominant. I've got our people's eyes, hair, skin color, love of cold, all that good stuff.
