Explain the build rollback

Per this: http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showt...41#post2076741

Does that mean the new 08/04/09 build that fixed the chat bug (among other things) will be reverted back to the old (chat bug, etc.) build until further notice? And that they're taking the servers down for 2 hours tonight to do so?

NBD. I like the honesty. "It didn't work, we'll pull it and try again. Sorry for the inconvenience."

By the way, did anyone else's friends list go missing. Local, Global, Global ignore, all MIA.

All but Server Friends disappears when Global server is having issues.

Yes - the devs have retreated in confusion, and the Chat Bug sits cackling in an evil way in his evil command chair in his evil lair.

Mine stayed.

I hope this doesn't mean that I'm losing the 2 levels I put on. But it probably will.
I appreciate them being upfront and taking action. However, I wonder why no MMO companies seem to build a rollback plan in to their patch days. WoW is the worst of course. You know, if you're running 4 hours past your projected resume time, it's time to rollback to the previous build and try some solid deployment testing.

Yes, I know this isn't quite the same issue. I wish they'd reacted faster -- how long did it take the multiple bug reports to result in the decision? (rhetorical question)

Ok, done venting. Carry on!

Version rollback wouldn't cause a player-database rollback unless the version caused significant format changes in said database. This might be true for something like i16, but not of today's patch.

It's safe to say your character's progress will be fine.

Back when Global was going down about every 5 minutes or so, I actually made an evil little robotic bug MM and called him <drumroll, please!> "The Global Chat Bug!" His bio reads 'All your globals are belong to me since 2005!' I couldn't remember the exact date they implemented global chat, so I winged it.

On a side note, did everyone notice the awesome calendar desktop backgrounds that @Master-Blade made up, in the sig of someone up above? Pure win. :^)

Yeah I do appreciate the honesty. But is it just me or does it seem like every patch and issue comes with new bugs these days? Would really be nice if they lit a fire under these programmers ***** and nip that sloppy code in the bud once and for all.

I'd vote...

Failure for sufficient Quality Control.

Issue 13 to present. No new news here. Move along.

Of course, failure to read the memo, bug reports, etc, could play in, but, as BaBs (Mr. Cry in my Milk) pointed out, Devs do NOT make mistakes.

Alien conspiracy?

You've never programmed. Unexpected bugs show up in code from multi-billion dollar companies, even bugfixes breaking other things, in sometimes very, very important systems, and you think a minor bug showing up in a game is evidence of sloppy programming?

Also, this wouldn't have made it to live if people had actually summoned the Rikti Monkey pet on Test.

ok so issue 16 did NOT go live today? Cause yesterday it said "patch and publish" would be today, so what is a "publish" if not a new issue?

I also like making posts when I don't know what I'm talking about. It's fun.

Publish just means they pushed a new patch to the live servers. it has nothing to do specifically with issue release.

Just means a new patch is pushed to the live servers. It could be a new issue or it could be a few bug fixes.

darn, I was too slow

Pulishing can refer to any new code added to the game, not just an Issue.
As soon as a new build goes live, it counts as published.

I am @Master-Blade. Thank you so much. I've been doing these calendars since the official ones ended in April:
May 2009 CoH Calendar (i14: Mission Architect)
June 2009 CoH Calendar ("Matrix Room")
July 2009 CoV Calendar (Sister Airlia - Cimerora Contact)
August 2009 CoV Calendar (The Leviathan's Tomb - Patron Arc mission in Sharkhead)
September 2009 CoH Calendar (Hero 1's Time Capsule)

The links have always been in my Signature, but the new forum lets me advertise and link them a little better with nice little thumbnail images. Long live the new forums and the ability to post images! Let's see how long that lasts. lol

The calendars are 1280x960 and designed to be printed out and used for easy TF/event planning. I also use it as my Windows desktop wallpaper. They are not in widescreen format, so if you have a widescreen monitor, you can avoid distortion by using the "Center" option and choosing a suitable background color for the border.

I'll keep it up. I already have a handful of ideas and screenshots ready to last us until the end of the year. By then, hopefully we'll have some more new content to showcase as well. Thank you again.

And so I sit here, asking myself, "Is it back up now? How 'bout now? Is it ready in 3...2...1...now?"

Curse you, City of Heroes developers. Curse you for creating a game that after 19 months I still want to play on a nightly basis.
