The Natives are Getting Restless

In an ideal world they should be things of the past, but I suspect we're looking at similar symptoms for a completely different set of causes.

I don't think I'm alone in this (but it's my opinion, so feel free to correct me) but I can't help feeling that the MA has left a lot of people feeling a bit "meh" about the game.

[ QUOTE ]
I could be jaded. I probably am a little - hell I've played this game almost daily for three years and maybe the magic's beginning to fade just a little. But that doesn't mean that I hate it - not by a long shot. In fact the reverse is true - but I am concerned.

[/ QUOTE ]

I'm in a similar position but drawing slightly different conclusions.

I've been playing the game for nearly 3 and a half years and since I started playing I haven't played anything else except Mass Effect and Dead Space once each. No really, nothing else.

Oh I've tried to play other games (both PC and Wii) but they hold my attention for about 20 minutes then get switched off and I go back to CoH.

This leaves me in a slightly conflicted position:

Even today, no other game holds my interest like CoH

But that means I'm looking to CoH to satisfy all my gaming needs. (I realise that "needs" might be a bit strong when talking about a computer game but bare with me )

So, while I'm currently a bit "meh" about the MA (for all the reasons that Judgement Dave has so eloquently put forward in another thread) I'm still exclusively playing CoH .

What I guess I'm saying here is that like everyone I have high expectation of new shiny things (I have an ADD to feed like lots of other people you know!). The higher the expectations, the less chance the new shinies have of satisfying them. But having said all that they're really not the core reason that this game continues to be my gaming habit of choice.

And if anyone could enlighten me what that core reason actually is I'd be very grateful!

Ever wondered how our costumes stay so clean and shiny given everything we put them through?

Then you need to try out Spandex Crisis (Arc ID 32943)

I think the three very brilliant parts of CoH that keeps people's attention are the costume generator, the huge amount of ATs and powersets to play around with and, finally, the pacing of the fights which is fast and action-filled without being uncontrollable.

I think there is a lot of truth to this.

I went and played Lord of the Rings Online and, as much as I enjoyed it (and it beats CoH in so many ways), the combat seemed dull and boring compared the sparkly, spectacular slugfests City of Heroes offers.

Except CoH is going backwards.

Most people used to be able to play it just fine, now there are disconnects, ultralag, chat bugs, etc etc

[/ QUOTE ]

Okay so I admit I was grumpy when I posted this, should not post in the mornings

Just cos of crashes etc lately.

Must admit, I played other games too, ;like LotRO, and although pretty etc they just dont have that fun element that CoX does/did depending on your view.

But this is why I think they need to pull their fingers out, as if CO has even half the fun of CoH in its prime, then they could have trouble. Especially in the light of never being told of any plans for the game or even regular contact or forum presence.

I think what they need to do is focus MORE on the bits that make CoX so damn good.
Costumes, powersets and big fights.

More costume options, let the imagination buckle under how much we can do.
More sets, let diversity be king.
More fights, let they be epic in the extreme!
Etc

Superheroes?

See for me, the only reason I can't put CoH down is simple. It's the only game where I get to play out the role of being a superhero. I'm a HUGE comic book geek, and CoH for the most part has kept me satisfied. The MA is an RP godsend imho, being able to create villains to suit existing SG plotlines is a must! The costume creator has been amazing, but the age is starting to show when new textures/pieces are released that are vastly superior to the old textures and pieces making the two clash rather than merge.

The visuals are very, very dated. Hell, I played WoW for 6 months, got bored yes, but even I think their visuals have aged better than CoH. Just my opinion so please don't flame me

The trouble is, now there are 2 superhero MMO's on the horizon. A situation CoH has never had to face before, and unless BIG changes happen soon. OR a "sequel" is mentioned, I personally think a mass exodus will occur.

My only current problem with CO itself is a lack of powersets being displayed. All I've seen so far are energy swords and dual pistols. CoH has vastly more than that.

But, it has to be said. Superhero fans are going to be spoilt for choice in the coming year!

Nope. At least not for me. I'm not really a comic book superhero fan. I just like the game.

Although the lack of elves is a plus point.

I really should do something about this signature.

Thirded!

If I'm honest, I've probably had more "extrafun" from things like the new costumes, powerset proliferation and costume change emotes than the MA.

(This may be a bit disheartening to the devs who slogged their bits off getting it to work! Sorry guys).

And, of-course:

All the above are true these are the building blocks of CoH for me at least the thing that drags me back every dam time is the costume creator followed by the fact even as a lvl 1 i can wipe the floor with 3 street thugs at once.

Please dev's build on these things MA is great and lots of fun but it has also left me wanting new combinations of powers (thorns/poison pls) also power customisation I accept that its a difficult near impossible thing to implement but it would truly be the next evolution for the costume creator.

Well obviously no I don't. What I meant was that in all of the videos I've seen that's all they've displayed. I'd love to see something else

Its also worth downloading the CO fansite kit, as in the folders are some of the icons for what we'd call powersets that confirm some of the highlighted powers.

If I was going to put money on it, I'd say if they are planning to better the costume creator then I very much doubt they will shy away from bettering the powers on offer.
On release anyway I'll be very surprised if they don't at least equal the power choices of their competitor, of course you can't call them power-sets per say as powers are assigned on a player-designed flexible custom framework instead of enforced sets that you subscribe to.

Posted

Yeah which is what CoH was originally envisioned as

Well here's hoping. I'm VERY excited about CO, same way I was for CoH back before it's release. Let's hope I'm not disappointed!

My superstrong, regenerating sonic blasting hero isn't THAT far off I hope

Yeah, lack of choice of powers I don't think is a worry for CO. More of a worry is extreme FOTM-elitism, given the difficulty in blancing free power choice builds.

Given how badly Cryptic messed up some powersets in CoH initially this is going to be fun... Unless you happen to be a Cryptic programmer trying to figure out a way to stop 1000s of powergamers do foul things to your game.
