People playing the game are from the real world - any real need for bad language there?

One persons bad language is another persons everyday method of speech.

I hope you're not relying on the filter to tell you when people are swearing at you though - it lies like a cheap rug.

I usually disable it, mainly because I like to know exactly what people are saying about me but I don't think a filter should allow people to say anything, especially over public channels. I do sometimes swear but I keep it in teams where I know the people or in channels that are private or it suits the general chat at the time.

It all depends on who you're saying it to. A fair group of people still feel uncomfortable with swearing, so do people feel uncomfortable/opposed to homosexuality and all that.

You must be careful who you're saying it to, at the end of the day. You don't know if you might offend them. And the filter is pretty much the worst I've ever seen. They have blocked out "poop".

Personally, I don't really swear, because I don't feel the need to get angry and curse people and not be viewed as a potty mouth.

I rarely swear in game, unless I'm teaming with people I know, but equally I'm generally not offended by people that do. However there are some who still think it's big and clever to swear to excess or for comedic effect. Bless 'em.

The English language is jam-packed with ways to express yourself eloquently, succunctly and accurately. Imaginative use of parlance can lead to great prose and tender poems, song and lymeric. The right combinations can rouse emotions or quell them, incite rage or lead to immense calm.

But sometimes you can save time and effort when annoyed with a loud cry of an expletive-punctuated sentiment that would take dozens of words otherwise.

Example:

'Sir, your presence I have grown tired of. While initially your company was at worst trivial, it now has become pointless and highly undesirable and I would very much be thankful were you to convey yourself to an alternative location for the duration of your existance.'

becomes;

'**** off, moron.'

Necessary? Not really. Saves time though, and can even be fun as long as it's not done to excess.

Not really, I've found polite threats followed by extreme violence to be adequate in most situations

Same here. I don't swear OOC much, unless someone has really annoyed me.

Most of what's been said, aside from The Hairy One, has been basically saying that people will swear and that wasn't the question.

In normal game play, swearing is unnecessary. (Which isn't to say it won't happen.)

However, I'm not normal, I roleplay. When my characters get particularly annoyed, they will swear. That's a reason for swearing ingame.

i.e. Which sounds more natural?

"Oh dear, I appear to have been shot and it does hurt quite a bit. Pardon me while I fall unconscious."

"Ah! <censored> <censored>, Malta!"

Oddly enough, when roleplaying, the <censored> bits don't get censored.

Exactly. While I don't do it in-game, such blithe swearing as, "Haha! F*** that!" is entirely meaningless to me in real life since I'm a thinking 25 year old. I know what tone and intent is.

Although, despite me backing up that point, I still prefer not to swear when I feel I don't have a right to; any respectable public setting such as a restaurant for example, and I also refrain in front of children if I know they are there. If someone barges into my own private conversation with a friend in a place where I can express myself exactly as I wish, they will rather predictably get told in no uncertain terms, to go forth and fornicate.

I support a degree of moderated speech in online communities such as in-game CoX. Swearing for the occasion makes sense; arriving in a mission and looking at the serried ranks of angry purples is definitely a "**** THAT!" situation. But just thoughtlessly dropping it into every sentence like I can, will and do with my close friends in real life just isn't on. I expect not to have some stick-up-bum prude whining at me every time I swear, in return I will maintain a level of responsible useage. Compromise.

And the funny thing is, Khorak, that someone who expresses themself as eloquently as you just did obviously doesn't need to pepper their conversation with Acute Anglo-Saxon.

That's a compliment, by the way, not a dig. It may also be a comment on our desensitised society, but I have a headache and I'm not sure.

Funny thing happened today.

Two people left the group I had just joined because people started to swear (I did not partake in the swearing part btw). Especially when they tried to avoid the profanity filter.

So apparently, some people do mind. I wonder what such people are doing playing a game where you 'arrest' people by shooting them full of holes though.

If there's excessive swearing in a team of strangers, I take that as a bad sign. The swearers aparently either have no idea other people think differently then they, or don't care about other people's sensitivities. From experiences, those attitudes transates into game style. like pushing forward because they are ready, no matter half the team is resting. Demanding heals because they overstep their and the team's boundries.

Also, if a situation calls for swearing, I like to hear the more creative versions (or at least less common ones)

There is a time and a place for swearing.

People who think that time and place is every other word probably do so because they have a very limited vocabulary.

Exactly. I find no real reason to do it in an online game though. I guess you could swear at someone playing bad (pulling extra mobs intendedly or whatever) or just being an idiot in general.

It's the same thing with l33t sp34k. It does not make you cool, it does not help get the message across. Conversely it just makes you seem dim-witted if you sprinkle all of your chat with swear/l33t.

I'm not even trying to make it seem like my own vocabulary is huge but I do know the difference between saying

"[censored] LR hits f***ing hard!!!"
and
"Ouch, he hits me for exorbitant amounts of damage" (which does usually become "Ouch, that hurt")

Hardly anyone speaks real l33t anymore, tis a dying art.
Mostly text speak now which always annoys me.

Swearings alright if it's funny I find. The more imaginative expletives are interesting and are even funnier if they are lost on the type who tends to drop the f-bomb every time speed boost runs out.

I don't swear much ingame, if I do it's,

1. Justified (Glowie on COT Cave map, Room full of reds/purples)
2. With a team I feel comfortable enough to swear in.

And it's always with both, not one or the other.
