COH2 predicted by Massively

But you are way wrong if you think that announcing a future Co2 will prevent people from currently moving over to and possibly likeing CO.
[/ QUOTE ]
Oh, lots of people will try CO, but they are more likely to come back to CoX after they discover it sucks, rather than move onto something else, if they think a sequel is on the way.
[ QUOTE ]
The only way COH2 has a chance is if they announce it before CO comes out.
[/ QUOTE ]
Anounce it to soon and the buzz will have fizzled out by the time CO is launched. And given it's current state CO will be very late (or very unfinished, in which case it becomes irrelevent).
By the time CoX2 actually launches, CO will probably have shut down anyway.
I really should do something about this signature.

Exactly why do you think that?
Don't get into a flap. It's only my opinion and I'm thick

I don't think this game has too many "total PVPers" as a percentage of teh total - in fact I don't think I'd like to even try to calculate that.
However PVP is an important element of the game to a significant number of people - both dedicated and casual. You only had to look at Friday Night Fight Club which usually generated a crowd of 10 - 15 players a pop, very few who had "uber-PVP builds" but were there just for the hell of it. Not always the same people either, whihc is perhaps the most significant statistic there.
Thelonious Monk
Compare to WAR. WAR is avery similar game to WoW, but better in almost all respects (yes, I've played both). Lots and lots of WoW players tried it, but most of them went back to WoW, and WAR is struggling to survive. Why? Because of established brand loyalty and the time they have aready invested in WoW.
COs launch will be the same. Most CoX players will try it, but unless it is much better than CoX, most of them will drift back to CoX, simply because of brand lyalty, and the time they have already invested in it. It wouln't be enough for CO to be just a little better for it to compete with CoX, and the way it is shaping up at the moment it isn't even that.
CO would have had a chance of finding itself a place in the market by targeting the console market, where it is not in direct competition with an established product, but it looks like they are having technical trouble with the console version.
Therefore, CO will go the way of TR. If it suvives the whole of 2009 I will be suprised.
I really should do something about this signature.

and to the PvP side of things yes i know it was never meant for this game and was brouht in at a later date. so heres my question why was it brought in, simple answer to keep other parts of the community happy, and to make the game more attractive to all potential customers.
I also know its not that good and it never has been we were in the ice ages with it pre i13, now it feels like were in the dark age (a very dark age), but theres is still room for improvement with all things. In most games now (MMO wise) PvP is just as important than PvE. Due to the potential customers it brings.

CoH does seem to be an exception, though.
No, PvP was brought in for the Korean launch, because the Korean market is very different, and a MMO without PvP is unthinkable. Why where Cryptic told to adapt CoH to the Korean market? Because NCSoft is a Krean company.

Subscription numbers show quite clearly that it failed in that regard.

To improve something you need to change something. Changing a game some people enjoy playing is bound to tick off those people, even if those changes are, generally, an improvment. I think Chess would be a much better game if you tinkered with the rules a bit....
Sometimes things are better left alone, even if they aren't perfect.
PvP is great, if it is designed as part of the core gameplay experience, but it doesn't work as a tagged on afterthought. PvP needs to either be a central piller of gameplay, or is should be left out entierly. No MMO needs to have PvP, there are plenty of people who don't like PvP, and plenty of others who are indifferent to it. No MMO needs to have crafting, or whatever other gameplay element you can think of. that is the trouble with the current market. Developers think a MMO needs to do everything, and it ends up doing nothing well. There is no reason why you can't have MMOs for people who like PvP and different MMOs for those that don't. People don't expect that all turn based stratagy games should have a FPS element, why should MMOs try to do everything?
I really should do something about this signature.
I think because coh was orginally designed as a pve game it fostered an atmosphere that a lot of players enjoyed as you did not have to worry about gankers , i know we have specific pvp zones but most games i played at the time didnt and i expect like many others i got fed up of some "person " with a good ping camping out at spawn points.
I came to coh and it was Wooooooooooooooh !! shiny , no campers and i dont have to kill 500 rats and make a rusty dagger
Dont get me wrong i enjoyed a bit of pvp as much as the next guy but i would rather have a good laugh wich for me is pve with friends those who want pvp can have their fun as can the farmers. The game caters for everyone each with their own way of playing so lets agree to that?
As far as CO from what i have seen i am not impressed so far and i do hope we get to transfer a couple of toons over to the new game or at least reserve a few names
edit and whats with the forums its lost my avatar and will not let me add it again

Only way it would help retain numbers assuming CO is any good would be if they release at the same time or before, which is extremely doubtful. Just announcing it will not prevent people moving to another game.
If CoH2 isn't released for two years it could still do very well, but that would be based on how good it is not on how good CO might be now (or on release).
cut and dry for me, if i can't bring my ones i made on 1 over to 2 = i ain't going.
friend have tried to get me to go try any number of games, wow and the like, 1 game is all i want wasting my time, not going to "start" another one.
Brutes: Doc O'Bay (yup, was me lvl2-48) Doc O'Bay Jr., Sihing, Belphanior, Mr. Lich & Joker's Wylde MMs, Rad'Man Corr, Lockup Dom, Suicide King Stalker, Lord Florentine DB/WP Brute, Tygercide Scrapper......Scrapper?? what the heck is he doing here???

I used to enjoy PvP, two things put me off. One was a lack of tangible rewards and the other was the mindset of so many people who do seem to enjoy PvP, sadly a mindset that now extends to the forums. I now have no interest in learning how to PvP because the rules are completely different to PvE play.
Lack of PvE content and updates will cause lower player numbers and that is what we're seeing now. Slap a band aid onto PvP and that player loss won't change appreciably, fix PvE, add PvE content, add new power sets and yes new costumes that is far more likely to encourage new players and to help people to return.
[ QUOTE ]
Also the 25% is people who are pvping often and hardcore. Not including people who go to pvp once in blue moon.
[/ QUOTE ]
I seriously doubt the precision of that number.
I believe the phrase is "Unpleasable Fanbase"
and as for the PvP sde of things i wont touch zonal pvp again until a) we get a restre i12 option or b) pre i13 pvp is brought back... like it is for arena

i think the other way around, if COH2 doesn't come sooner then CO, a lot of ppl already moved.
also, CO has bin in development quite a while, and around spring 2009 it's released.(or they say)
you can't say unfinished, nether can you say it sux.
there are also 2 kind of ppl playing this game.
1. ppl who like to play COH
2. ppl who like to play a super hero game.
and it's a lot more likely that type 2 is a way bigger % then type 1.
type 2 is also more likely moving to CO even if COH2 comes around, and with to less info about COH2, they are not gonna wait till they know more onfo, they much rather take the first success super hero MMO there is, currently CO.

I would guess the number is closer to 2.5% rather than 25%.

Or 25% of the population PvP sometimes, which sounds about right. A quarter of people have PvPed at least occasionally.

first i want a dev confirm it, then i can believe it.
They won't confirm it until they are ready to anounce it with a big splash, which will likely, just by coincidence, be around the same time as CO goes live.
[/ QUOTE ]
[ QUOTE ]
That's kind of after the horse has bolted don't you think?
[/ QUOTE ]
[ QUOTE ]
No it isn't. As the Massively article points out, people are more likely to stick with CoX if they think it is going somewhere (which is why the idea of character transfer is so important).
[/ QUOTE ]
Character tranfser is critical, i agree. But you are way wrong if you think that announcing a future Co2 will prevent people from currently moving over to and possibly likeing CO.

[ QUOTE ]
As it is, it won't matter anyway, as CO is going to bomb, but they would have made thier plans long before that became apparent.
[/ QUOTE ]
Hmmmm. I don't think your field is marketing is it?
So, you are hardly qualified to make that statement.
There is no reason at all to think Co will fail. At least not till the runaway locomotive called DC Online comes charging through the station, anyhow. then it may have problems, but that will largely depend on just how good Dc actually is.
