That's... quite a long list of heroes. Did they ever kill a petty thug though? Huh?

[/ QUOTE ]

Some did, some didn't -- same as for heroes that doesn't use weapons. Wolverine has killed, as has Colossus and Rogue, even though they don't use weapons. The Shadow shot to kill -- The Phantom usually shot to disarm. It's not the weaponry that decides if you're a boy scout or a gritty fighter.

Completely agree with you. It's the sole reason I refuse to make a Hero who uses weapons.

I think you'll find he means lethal weapons. WWs lassoo and Daredevils billy club dont quite fit the bill.

[/ QUOTE ]

Batman used to shoot those cowardly and superstitious punks. I've no problem with some heroes using weapons.

Shooting to kill. Didn't that give The Shadow a bad name?

If you stretch your definition of superheroes beyond those of comic book origin, heroes kill petty thugs by the truckload. James Bond, Indiana Jones, how many thousands died when Luke destroyed the Death Star?

I really should do something about this signature.

Among petty thugs, sure. The Shadow wasn't exacly a petting zoo kind of hero.

Pretty sure that a billy club can be lethal - though maybe has never been used to kill by DDs hand. But then many more-apparently lethal weapons can be used in non-lethal ways.

Well, that wasn't quite as bad a reaction as I expected!

I'm not sure why, and would find it impossible to explain or rationalise, but there are a couple of "powers" that don't sit right with me.

Swords / Shields (ironically, not Katana though for some bizarre reason), for me smack too much of fantasy MMO than comic hero MMO. I like CoX largely because it's different as well as the comic hero aspect.

Anything that involves a weapon that requires a superhuman level of skill to use, I can also relate to. Axes, Electric Hammers, Archery. Also heroes that have other super powers that are required in order to wield said weapon, are also OK. (Yes, yes I know Cap. has had the super soldier serum and is super strong etc.. but I've never really been able to "get" him. If I'm honest that could be part of my aversion to a shields set in CoX)

Anything with guns.. naff. The one scenario I keep coming back to is the classic, "I am Fantastico Man!! I'm a SUPER HERO!!! I LAUGH at your puny guns!!!!"

What would a dual pistol or similar hero say in the same situation? "I am Texan Boy! I'm a SUPER HERO. I LAUGH at your puny... er.... guns. Bugger"

Reading back, I think what it is that doesn't really excite me about guns, swords and shields is that they're too "generic". For me, there's nothing different or imaginative about them, and so don't really excite my imagination.

i'd like to see shields as an 'epic' style as in you can only choose: scrapper (or other melee char), shield primary, shield secondary.

so everything is shields, so your 'filler' attacks are stuff that fit round shields, not swords or martial arts or fire melee, they are the shield melee

shiled bash, shield throw, shiled kick, hide/shield upper cut, shield dash, etc you get the picture.

Well, yeah but the later two are golden age which doesnt strictly count. And Colossus and Rogue dont (didnt ) go round with guns and swords as a rule.

Those weapons are kind of lethal and its a bit odd that they feature heavily in a super hero game. I mean, heck, even the devs say we "defeat" not kill, which is kind of hard when ive just dual sliced someone.

aye, the whole lethal smash weapon nature of melee in coh as been a bit off, more actually streetfighting melee versions please, do we really need axe/mace katana/bs doubling up - better if they were actually two sides to one spec, so you have 'heavy weapon' or 'light weapon' spec and can choose after if you're bs or katana, etc.

would leave more options for adding another 'light' or 'heavy' spec into it too, with respecability too rather than power class respecability

Even Longbow's infantry use pistols as a means of fighting which really disappointed me. I expected to go up against a super-powered corporation. It is doable. The lowest ranking (Minions) member could have the most basic of super powers. Heck, it could even be divided up into factions. Once you get passed Level 35 you start fighting the Elites of the corporation. Even minions have a plethora of super-powered techniques.

Anyway, I appear to have gone off-topic. Sorry.

EDIT: Although, having read some of the replies in this thread, it has given me the inspiration to make a weapon-wielding Hero. He's a man of vengeance, of course.

although after a while you do face the 'why have the got so many bosses/elites? they are lame' so it does get difficult to balance.

maybe a rethink of battle/map strategy is required to make this more cool, so you have our elites but they dont just have a small mob/room around them, they are the ones who come in as ambushes and buff their own 'team' or tehy are teh ones dominating a map and directing forces, so you actually have to do stuff to get to them...

brains dried up

more like a streets of rage end of level baddy rather than an entire level of minions

with the endlevel being uber boss after boss type stuff.

By Elites I didn't mean Elite Bosses. I meant a faction of Longbow I made up in my tiny, little brain. A faction, of course, consisting of super-powered beings. Minions, Lieutenants, Bosses. ALL of them have super-powers.

EDIT: ExtraGonk, I just read your post properly. I like the idea. An ambush of super-powered Elite Bosses. Genius!

example, like when was the last time you were really overwhelmed by mobs, like really overwhelmed and it wasnt your own deliberate moves to make it so, i'm thinking monumental ambushes which go way over the cap, but maybe a boon to help, if you get it right - even something simple like rather than teamsize*2 its team size *4
