Animated Hair

Guess I'd best start off by apologising for creating a thread about animated hair (I can hear the groans already).

Everybody knows that this is Golden Girls number 1 wish and it has caused me to take a closer look at the animated hair we have in game already - Ghost Widow.

Ghost Widows animated hair, put simply, looks like a cape attached to the back of her head. It looks ok from certain angles but imo it isnt particularly impressive and I doubt I would want a 'head cape' on any of my characters.

How easy would it be to implement 'head capes' for characters?

Would you use it or would you stick to the current hairstyles? (most of which wouldn't be compatible with head capes from the look of them).

As a footnote I sometimes play LOTRO if I fancy a change of pace from CoH/V. They have animated faces in LOTRO and that's something I'd love to see in our game. They really add a lot of character to your toons and the emotes that you can get with animated faces could be really cool. Would this be possible or would it require a new game engine?

So for me:
animated head capes: No
animated faces: hell yeah

Anyway, apologies for the animated hair thread but at least it might give the other threads a breather

Also check the wedding pack female bridal hair, that really is a hair cape...

If any alterations are made to the meshes of characters then I presume it would throw everything out of kilter with regards to fitting properly and clipping issues etc.
I'd love the character meshes and faces to be improved, even if its only to the standard of Mirror Spirit (Faultline trainer).

Unlikely though I imagine.

You just HAD to do it, didn't you? And she'd actually been carping on about it LESS lately! Now you'll just set her off again!

I'm of the mind that the whole engine needs something of an overhaul, its been a while since the last engine over haul which was IIRC with the release of CoV or around that time. And I know every now and then some of the settings that can be set change a bit (see i12 ). But the whole engine is beginning to look a bit dated. On top of which there are so many things the current engine seemingly cannot do, which IMO would make the game more immersive.

Animated hair, who cares (besides GG)? Certainly not me, but looking at some of the graphical wonders that other games give us I wonder how long it will be until people stop playing because CoH looks ugly.

I think that'll be a while yet in all honesty. It's looks aren't exactly cutting edge, but they're still sufficiently detailed and pretty to do the job - "functional", if you like. The added bonus to this of course, is that people with lower end systems are still able to play and given NCNCs thrust to improve the game and get it out to the most people, any engine update that would increase the min / rec system requirements, wouldn't be a good move imo.

Having said that, if NCNC are serious about increasing the longevity of the game more than a couple of years, (and given their blurb, I've no reason to doubt that) I'd have thought an engine update would be on the cards in the long term, and given that commitment to the IP, I wouldn't be surprised if the outline of that is already being planned as we speak.

We're okay as long as we don't say her name 5 times. BTW - does anyone know if she has a hook for a hand?

Also - animated hair would be great, but I'd rather have all the other stuff the devs think are more important first.

Besides if it ever got implemented I'm pretty certain she would vanish in a puff of logic.

Not sure he needed removing kindly with puns like that

But, to respond to the OPs main point, there is clearly a cost to be borne with animated hair, in terms of resources etc and with the frequent complaints of "LAAAAAAAAAAAAAG" the moment more than three people collect in a zone (largely unwarranted I would say) the real cost of animated hair would be untenable for many.

I don't know if you recall the old Hamidon raids but everyone insisted that capes and auras were turned off before entering the zone and even then it did get quite laggy at times. Imagine people with animated hair as well!

An interesting comparison would be Second Life where you can have all kinds of animated hair (in fact you can have animated everythings :O ) Linden Labs are now looking at publishing the rendering cost of your character in some way when you are in world so that people can see how resource intensive your animated hair, auras, blingy sparkles etc are making your character. This is being quite divisive in world, and from what I can tell, those who are against it tend to be the people who have the most to lose

So, unless we get a substantial engine upgrade I seriously think Animated Hair won't be on the cards.

CoX could definitely do with an engine upgrade after 4 years, especially with direct competition coming up in 2009/10.

So approximately 3 months after the "competition" arrives, expect a MASSIVE Issue release including new engine based on Crysis or something

I am not holding my breath much for such a thing to be honest. All i am hearing is "you ll be excited with what we got in store for you"

I am waiting i13 to get excited and see whats in store and this whole IP "new turn in game" bubble is gonna burst or not.

I'm still waiting on the CoX engine upgrade to CryEngine2,
As:
1. AION already uses it.
2. NO clipping issues.
3. It supports DX8 through DX10
4. It can make low poly models look like high poly ones.
5. Automatic dynamic scaling of models.
6. PC's and NPC's items including weapons and costumes are interchangable.
7. Dynamic animations. (Inc. facial expressions, hair.)
8. Ragdoll physics.
9. Destructive environments.
10. Vehicles.
11. ...

This list could go on and on, but I think I made the key points above.

Re: The discussion about engines; Correct me if I'm wrong but If NorCal weren't intending to be using the CoX II engine in future titles, (the one I presume that Champions-Online uses)... then that would not of been made part of the shared resources deal the studios made when they seperated.

Because it was!, wasn't it?.
