The do have the 'other' choice - do other feature and content work. I doubt not being able to change power effect colour is deal breaker for any significant portion of the playerbase.

One problem I see is if you have a 2 x MM team, the SK will end up with a possible 7 pets (or even 8 if they're both Necro).
