I play a Mercs/TA MM myself and sometimes I think that many arrows are simply bugged, as in they do not do what they are supposed to do. I suspect especially the debuffs are not up to par. But it might be only my impression. How could I measure the effectiveness of the gas or the acid arrows?

Ive taken down a few AV/Heros on my bots/poison, keeping the pets far away enough from each other so they wernt all killed by aoes is the hard part, also had to take aid other as well as the Alkloid to ensure they stay alive. As long as i can keep them alive they will have the damage to take the AV down.
However if I made it again I would go Thugs/poison. With Noxious Gas on it the Brutish pet (bruiser?) can get away with tanking the AVs.
So far i've taken down 2 AV/Heroes (Luminary and Infernal) with my lvl35 Bots/FF MM, altho a Shivian was used in each case...does it still count 
ive soloed a few AV/Heroes with my mercs/traps
whislt i belive you can still call it soloing with shivs, personally i dont use them. It just takes the shine off the victory imo

A Shivan counts as soloing in my eyes. I used one on my Brute against Luminary, though he died after he fired off two or three attacks.
I myself haven't soloed AV's/Heroes yet, but my currently level 26 Necromancy/Dark Miasma Mastermind Anacronus has soloed every EB the game has thrown at him.
Thusfar I've soloed every AV/hero there is with my bots/poison. All with fair ease, and including that time the AVs had those ridiculously high regen buffs. Poison does a nice bit of debuffing, together with some healing capabilities. While robots buff/debuff themselves and do a fair amount of damage. Not to mention quite a bit of stuff bots are resistant to.
Only thing to watch for is your bots running in melee (big no-no) or fire-based AVs/Heroes (I'm looking at you Infernal..) cause they tend to hurt quite a bit.

With the help of one brute and a lot of patience we took out Statesman in Recluse Victory. I noticed I just didnt do enough damage output to take out the ultimate tanker. 
But I have to say he had NO chance

Managed Countess crey as an AV on mine. Most of the EBs I did but couldn't take down Synapse or Mynx cause I couldn't make them stand still I guess.

I have beaten some Heroes/AVs with my robo/poison MM with the first being the Sea Witch (which I had to throw gazillions of robots at due to the early level).

Synapse and Mynx are easily the two hardest .. I never had to face either alone. But I guess I wouldnt be able to either. Even tar patch will not hold them because of the slow casting time. Only a full hit of soulstorm or fear would slow those down enough to hit tar and attack with zombs. And hitting an AV is not something you can count upon a lot (even with acc slotted + Tackticks).

Taken out all but one EB with my Merc/Traps. There is an arachnoid thingie with insane regen I can't crack. Forgot the name, it's been a year or so. Should maybe have another go at it... ;-)
I have to admit that any AV with average and above regeneration, is beyond me. Without "cheating". Can't do enough damage, can't debuff them enough. Some can be nailed down and worn out, others will just heal.
Whatever/dark probably runs off with the winning formula there. As in all other things. ;-)

Anyone tried a AV/Hero with a thugs/poison? Leveling one up atm would like to know if they can do as well as my bots/ff.
I have not tried that particular combination, but I know that thugs/ can do it and that /poison can do it. The combination of both should be fine.

Been struggleing against AVs with my Mercs/Poison, though that might just be down to slotting, its an old character and one I never really put much thought into slotting with :P
Its mainly lack of damage that is hurting me, even with my -regen my minions are still taking a damned long time to take certain AVs down. And combine that with AV self heals and flangey "untouchable" powers and it can all go bad so quickly
The key things are I guess:
1-Make sure you can do some -regen.
2-Dont let your minions bunch up, keep them seperated so AOEs dont get them all.
3- most top tier minions can tank the AVs if supported with a heal power, I never take the medicince pool on any of my chars, but I respeced it back in for my MM just to augment the poisons heal power.
i have a Necro/Dark Owns everytime massive slows a defence buff best heal ever( ) , and another pet at lvl 38 and Fear so all good :P easy button too MM's
I'd suggest bots/traps.

Same here. It's pathetic.
Depends on the EB or AV you're facing as well. I can't imagine being able to do Barracuda at all because of her MM killing 'I WIN' cheat button in the form of her massive damaging cone attack. A few missions on and Calystix is even more cheap in a more subtle way; he's a better MM than you are. How do you fight an EB who summons two lieutenants and a boss who absolutely dump all over everything you have, while still being a DPS powerhouse like any other EB?

Recluse is hurting me the most at the moment, Calystix waa not much of a problem for me thankfully...Though Mako nailed me pretty hard when he popped up.
Teaming with a brute is my quick route to victory against most AVs...Though again Recluse can be a nightmare.
Mercs/TA. Had I known how rubbish the combo wuld turn out to be when CoV was released, I'd have simply saved time and stabbed myself in the eye. Good old Mercs, proper classic minions they are. Which is to say they're fine against anything that doesn't have a name. Weird.
I really, really want a Thugs Mastermind, but it causes me serious mental pain thinking about the idea of a bunch of gangbangers making mincemeat out of enemies like the Rikti. It's a total suspension of disbelief failure, I wish I could freeze the appropriate part of the brain or something.

i have a bots/traps and its working prety well, but something that suprised me about soloing heroes was that i managed to defeat ms. liberty and her mum on my own with a dominator (gasp) i was soo supprised and i got 8000 xp out of it which is rly usedful at lvl 25
Can I be clear you are talking about AV's here.. not down graded Elite Bosses?
Because without a Shivan (which may well underpin the reports here) I find it hard to beleive that AV's can be solo'd without very specific circumstances.
Without -regen, I can see how any mastermind could mathematically do enough damage (solo) to an AV to overcome its regen rate?
I'm usually fine with my ninja/poison against any EB and most other baaad baddie but it tends to become a grind where I'm usually pretty much out of end due to constant debuffing, trying to heal my Oni at least and spamming the other pets as they suffer the PBAoE deaths. The Baddies do tend to aggro on me too, due to the constant stream of debuffing.

It's a lot more work than I have on my bots/traps set. The bots really do "heal" at the right moments and as long as I keep'em inside my bubble spamming my mortar and poison traps that seem to be enough. Also, this way the baddie rarely aggro in me.
Oddly enought I just had the toughest fight in my ninja/poison career against a rather low EB: The Radio in the TV mish. I faceplanted twice and had to use quite a load of insps to keep end up and have my pets do dam enough before they died. The darn thing killed'em faster than I could get'em back up. PSI AVs have been rather bad too.
I agree with Shannon, some builds are good for some AVs, other builds are better for other AVs. So if you're thinking of creating a new mm consider what kind of game-style you're in to: easy relaxed ranged damage? aggressive fast killing (more work for you)? solo gaming? team oriented? ...or a nice mix?
I'm probably doing the extremes:
Bots/traps, very relaxed. Great solo player, don't need fitness pool. Good in teams because pets stay at range and don't get in the way. Bubble etc nice for teams. But annoying for ppl to wait for my end to get back up and I feel silly just standing there when the rest of the team are fighting madly
Ninja/poison: Very aggressive, needs loads of control esp if a kin SB them. They gladly run all over the map if unchecked. Critical strikes, great with a dom doing holds. Poison great target debuff, liked by teams. Little protection or buffs for pets or team. Can superjump. Unlike other MMs I've tried I really prefer playing in teams with this one. Let me emphasize this again: A! LOT! OF! WORK! at least compared to many of the other MM sets.
With some hard earned knowledge I'd say poison might be better used by one of the primaries that have a healer pet, but it's a brilliant single-target debuffer.
