Ooh, so we can all set up homes in the tower? That'd be cool. Although some of the neighbours... I dunno, you want to be the one to tell them to turn the TV down?

Yup. It is a 3 1/2 Star Hotel all managed by Torgo. With the famous all you can eat Fridays.

hey there, i realise this is probably a bit off topic for this but i thought this post would be the best way to contact the CT community

I want to ask very seriously who is insulted by Leprechaun, i was very dissapointed and disturbed when i found someone was, i just want to know your general opinion before doing anything, until then i am not r/ping with Leprechaun as i do not wish to insult anyone further...

Hmmm, I'd be quite happy to know as well. I'm playing a distinctly English character who looks down on all "Johnny Foreigners", but I'm quite multi-racial in my friends/self.

Mr. Normal might call Leprechaun a "Damn Paddy Bog-Trotter", but 90% of my family is Irish, so it's only as the character.

well, i'm not english and i am not offended at all by that, i find it very funny... i am just rather disturbed because i didn't know my character was insulted... i just thought this would be the best way to ask the community

Good on you for opening this up to the community. I suspect that it's probably in character and if the player had a real problem with you, they would send a tell or something. But it's a good point, some things do press people's buttons and it's better to be open and honest about it all and see whether someone genuinely is offended.

I heard it was quite busy from 9PM last night, make sure you get the regulars to join the chat or register for the forums.

Though do hold going off to Pocket D at least for a while people.

Speaking of which, we gotta have a combined night with crowds from both locations at Pocket D.

As in a GG/CT meet up in Pocket D?

Hmm... don't think Ana'd show up for that - not her scene in the slightest. Though I'd love to see Torgo meet RC...

3 people already have sent me tells about this... one roleplayer and 2 other people, all irish and all find this insulting, i don't much like this, i myself may not be irish but they have a special spot in my heart and when people tell me that i am insulting a country that i probably prefer to anything else... it kinda gets me down... if he as a new character i would delete him but he is my only lvl 20, any ideas???

Unfortunately, Stalingrad, this is a very tricky issue.

If people feel insulted, then, regardless of your intent, you may need to rethink your position. Could you, perhaps, alter the character somewhat to avoid causing discomfort or insult to others? I recall a leprechaun at GG a few times (not sure who played him, though) and he didn't rely quite so heavily on maintaining the accent, if that helps.

As I said, it's a tricky issue and I'm sorry to hear that your receiving complaints. I hope you can resolve it without having to give up on the character completely.

I agree, it's a tough one. I occassionally play a character who is very sarcastic and cynical but as with all text-based communication, it doesn't always come across in the way that it was meant and I end up being accused of griefing someone. Sometimes even when you're being careful, someone could end up getting offended.

If you don't want to delete the character or stop playing them, you could always tone things down a little. Change his appearance a bit and as suggested, perhaps tone down the accent a little. Ireland has a wealth of myth to draw on so you could always slide sideways into playing a fairy/fae/dwarf/sidhe type creature. Just a suggestion but I hope the situation resolves itself.

Stalingrad, your leprecaun, is he a lepricaun that happens to be Irish or an Irishman that happens to be a lepricaun?

And indeed, the GG 'Mad' Leprican doesn't rely on an accent. He relies on hos costume, his name but fore most, on his maners and comments about the fairyworld

So, find out what is perieved as offencive about your character, and figure out if it's easy to fix and keep the character.
Alternatively, you could do a complete retcon of the character... though that would be a bit hard to explain to the rest of those you played with
(One way: not play him IC for a week or so, and have him comeback as a 'the second' or similar: "oh, you must have met my father"... just a possibility for you to play with)

I play a Leprechaun character as well (Fineous O'Malley) and had someone ask me if I was taking the [censored] out the Irish. Other than that I've had no problems, I even had people stop me and take screenies during St Patricks night. I've teamed with one other Leprechaun character who plays IC pretty much all the time but I dont remember him putting on any accent.

A sad situation, Stalingrad, I hope you find a way to modify it.

I have Irish blood on my mothers side and I don't mind. Hell, if somebody made Evil Cornish Miner Man, I wouldn't be offended, I'd laugh.

I remember impressing an actual Russian Player with RC who offered to help me with some of the langauge if I needed.

I suggest putting him on Hiatus for gaming til this is all sorted out and create a character that you'd feel happier playing with.

well i have been playing with another irish concept, the fianna, they were an ancient tribe in ireland and they have a very cool history, and when i have had complaints i have only talked to one person, the other 2 just sent me tells presumably about my costume... i just find it particulary distressing since to be totally honest i don't know why i am english lol and i take a lot of pride in playing irish bagpipes etc. and involving myself in irish pub music at the local etc. and (as i said earlier i think) i want to move there second i get the money...

i probably will start another char, or at least wait a while with Lep and tone him down although i am not really sure how considering his name etc. probably need a while to think about it

Retcon is the shortened form of the fancy phrase "Retroactive Continuity" where the creator/owner of a character/universe changes personalities and/or history partially or completely. DC's Crisis on Infinite Earths is a very good example of an active retcon.

I'm afraid it's up to you, Stalingrad. Personally, I'd feel it a shame if you abandoned the character completely - a subtle retcon/alteration could do wonders - but it's your choice.

Retcon: Link

Basically, a retcon is rewriting your character's history.

a complete retcon... I'll give you an example of one of mine.
I had Misha, a cheeta girl, but beyond that, not much else. I was playing in on the 'cat girl' hype. Didn't play her more then 2 or 3 times.

Later, I got a free costume token, and changed her appearance. And with it her background. No more tail, no more cat ears. She was now no longer a 'girl' but a woman of 80, who became a vampire almost 50 years earlier. (bit drastic, but it worked for a bit)

Now, a delete and remake later, Misha is a cat young lady. Not much more or less then that. Very different from both previous versions.

These retcons worked because they were never active characters. For a full retcon on an active character to work, you need either a darned good explination, and or the support of those around you

For you, I'd say it'd just be to rewrite pieces that caused the 'insult'? (can't think of the right word here)

I don't think you need go as far as retconning a character. CT has not had any of the over-arching metaplots that crop up at GG rather frequently so there is no continuity that needs changed. Just change how you play him...

I've done that with the character I used to take to GG all the time more than once, and no-one has ever really noticed...

So you'd need to retcon Captain America coz he'd be insulting to Americans?

Sorry, I call bull on this. I know a LOT of Irish people and they often tell the most offensive Irish jokes. Similar with Jewish, Arabian etc.

If someone is finding offence with what is literally a 'made up character', then I think they really need to look inside themselves. Most of the Family speak with an Italian Accent and most of the Tsoo seem Oriental; and I don't see anyone complaining about them.

If this 'racist' creed exists, then surely they should also condemn Mr. Normal for being an Englishman and wearing a bowler hat and pinstripes.

Leprechauns are not only part of popular culture, they have little to do with the proper 'Oirish'; and I'm sure that the real Irish people see little wrong in it.

If they do call again, ask them to petition you and let the GM's decide. Seriously, I think this is particularly silly and is actually denigrating the proper Irish community.

It would be a shame if you couldnt play your character, from an another post you made he seems a lot of fun. Its not even as if this is a steriotype Irishman, its a mythical character from Irish mythology. BTW. how do you play him? If your acting like Father Jack I can see how it might raise a few eyebrows

father jack??

i play him as a small fun loving evil little leprechaun with something much the opposite to kleptomania when instead of wanting to steal things he wants to sell them. i think what might offend people is the costume (green suit, ginger beard, green top hat etc.) or the accent which ta be tootoly 'onest oi didn't thank would be all tha' bad considerin' 'is doyverse backgroond...

maybe i should wright in background ((strong irish accent)) and leave it at that... but as i said somewhere else two people didn't even hear me speaking since i talk fine out of CT they just either searched and saw my name or saw me flying past...
