The best PVP blaster?

Hi, I hear blasters are awesome in PVP but I was wondering what THE best build. Ive heard Ice/NRG is good but im usure. Please help me out.

Best against what? If you want to rip a granite tanker to pieces, go elec/elec. If you want to do single-target damage, go ice/nrg, but that's highly resisted in PVP, which is a problem.

Im thinking single target. Are there any templates out there for Ice/NRG, or perhaps just some tips on what powers pools to take with the build etc... ?

(note: this post is about Zonal PvP, not saying a thing about Arena PvP)

Building an Ice/Energy means you'll have to deal with a lot of whine on the public channels, since your main method of attack will resemble the stalker - going in, killing stuff, hoping no-one has time to react back. You'll get called a ganker more times than you really want.

Stamina is pretty much a must for any blaster, so Fitness pool is a solid choise. Movement power is more to personal prefrence. I had Teleport Foe / Teleport on General Gamma for a long time, but switched it in favor of Combat Jumping / Superjump / Acrobatics a while ago. Flight works nicely too as people usually look at themselves from a camera angle above them, not below. Superspeed has the perk of giving you Hasten, but if you're in a situation where you need Hasten to kill someone you're already on a weak ground. Superspeed is quite good way to quickly close in on the kill, but you'll need another movement power for vertical movement in case your target flies away.

You'll be looking for most damage in least time or other ways for the foe to be unable to retaliate, so Bitter Ice Blast, Bonesmasher, Total Focus, Aim, Build-Up, Power Boost, Freeze Ray, Energy Punch, Ice Blast and Ice Bolt are your friends. You won't have the benefit of proper long-range attacks so Boost Range is pretty much either-or. Since you'll run into situations where an enemy is low in HP and you don't want to waste the biggest attack you got, Ice Bolt is damn fast and solid attack. Your need for Conserve Power is debateable. I don't have it anymore in my build.

The AoEs in Ice are pretty weak, but if you want to take out Masterminds at Recluse's Victory, you'll be wanting Blizzard.

Or to put it differently:

You can skip Frost Breath, Ice Storm, Bitter Freeze Ray, Boost Range and Stun. And Stun can work quite if stacked with other Disorienting powers from your Secondary.

You'll also be the favorite target of Stalkers, who you can't see without taking Tactics from the Leadership pool. And even if you take Tactics, you'll probably be blind as a bat against the better of them. Your low hitpoints guarantee that they'll flock on you and kill you before you have a chance to retaliate. And you'll find yourself cursing them many times, calling them unfair. But it's more or less hypocrisy, since your build is designed to do the same to others. They just do it better.

the blaster sets for pvp by me :

not fire primary
not fire secondary
not assault rifle primary
not devices secondary
not ice secondary (but less so than the others)
not energy primary (but even less so than the others, its more a case of what are you fighting)
not archery primary
not fire primary
not fire secondary

there are a million ways to build a blaster, and to be good as one, find what suits you, but avoid the sets above will help you minmax a tad more later on (to all the whingers etc and people who think all the primaries are great, no theyre not otherwise they would fare as well )

Thats PvP, and the more they moan at you probably suggests the better player you are as long as you don't start boasting or anything. There is nothing wrong with taking up a "Stalker Role".

I had a 1v1 with a Brute in Warburg last week, won, and then had his whole team calling me a noob and other things I wont mention. All that abuse was just because I was "moving around to much" as they put it ....

If all that don't bother you, then go for it. You never know you might like all the attention.

At the end of the day they are only sitting at a PC being a saddo like the rest of us

Heres that build your looking for.

as stated there are loads of ways to build a good one, plight is awesome as elec/elec, Freon rocks on Ice/EM and yet I personally wasnt able to "blapp" as well as either (no where close) on the RV event. That said my fire/dev annilates stalkers. Guess its down to what you want from it.

Although there isn't ONE uber set, i'd recommend energy/or elec as secondaries unless u make ur toon to be a stalker killer.
OT, I don't think blasters are so awesome in pvp tho

True. Speaking of Stalker-killers, I think Elec/Dev could probably be the best combination for a pure stalker-killer build with the endurance drain combined with good solid range and damage in many attacks. I've noticed that Ice/ lacks a bit when it comes to killing stalkers as it relies quite heavilly on the ability to hold, and stalkers are usually hold-resistant. Fire/ and Energy/ could actually pull it off quite well as well - the high number of pure damage they deals should come in handy.

Well, that's just sudden rambling, it's 6 am here and I should be deep asleep already.

What in CoH constitutes as "teh awesomeness!1!1" in PvP depends much on the skills of the player and the enemy or enemies they're against. In good hands, a Blaster can easilly constitute as awesome. Not sure if it's the choise for a PvP beginner, since in the end, they're bloody squishy. Would still recomend it over a Stalker any day. At least you learn something while playing a Blaster..

Heh, I had to laugh at that. That just shows they obviously haven't PVPed against anyone half decent . In PVP, standing still is DEATH. Nothing more, nothing less. If you're a hero, it's hanging a sign over your head saying "Hey, come AS me" if a villain, it's "hey, come 2 shot me". I used to be godawful at PVP, because I stood still, thinking my +perception would keep me safe. It didn't.

Now I know how to move around, I'm fairly happy at taking down dominators, stalkers, and some brutes. I'm now merely bad at PVP.

The point is this: To survive in PVP, you MUST be highly mobile and self sufficient. Ice/energy is awesome (and a right bugger to play against), but you need speed. SS/hover is good, but you might want to save slots with CJ/SJ/Acro, which also gives you immob and hold resist, and complete knockback protection, which is another excellent thing to have in both PVE and PVP.

energy/dev FTW!!!! :P defiance also FTW!! :P

I retract my statement. To survive you must stand in open space, surrounding yourself with mines.

And use Energy to knock them onto the mines.

While the scrapper sits backs and laughs.

Ah, good times

Threads like this are guarenteed to run to pages because everyone has an opinion but as Plight points out, its what you do with it that matters.

Blasters certainly aren't easy characters to get results with in PvP. You do tend to have a to sweat a bit for your kills, especially in the Battlegrounds. So, point is, i wouldn't assume by taking Psydocks build as above that by some miracle, villains will crumble at the very sight of you. With the reduction in toggle drop chance in I7, you wont find many who are scared of taking you on. So, at least you will get lots of practice.

As clearly said, there is no 'best' set/build. period.
All relies on play-style and skills.

I pretty much agree with Plight about Fire though since it lacks the utility of the other sets. Even archery and assault rifle primaries get a ranged stun which is nice for PvP.

Posted

If I was to build a team blaster now (and maybe even 1v1) it would be fire/energy.

You are all underestimating the awesomeness of the blaze -> bonesmasher combo and placing far too much emphasis on 'utility' (imo).

Doubt a fire/energy would beat a ice/energy, i could easily outrang him, no need to go to melee with him.

Posted

Maybe, but don't knock it till you try it.

Posted

Yeah Thrusty is building one, we'll have a go once his 50. Fire lacks ranged damage. Blaze is too close and fire blast= Ice bolt. And you can forget about the snipe in a one on one.

Posted

Do you not think a snipe would be useful in a 1 on 1?

Posted

Against a scrapper maybe. Against a blaster they would just shoot you in the interrupt time, and it lowers DPS.

Posted

I'm thinking more of having a 1 on 1, and you both get each other down too low health, you manage to die with the enemy at only a sliver of health left, you respawn and you have him as your target (I don't know why it does that), take a spot where he hasn't noticed you straight away, snipe before he can retaliate with any kind of Defiance built up moves.
