Three Rules of RP we can all agree on... Probably.

Previously stated by me in a different thread...

Rule 1: RP shall be fun.
Rule 2: You shouldn't Godmode.
Rule 3: Outside the 1st & 2nd Rules, there is no "right" way to RP.

As pointed out by Gideon, there is also the all important Rule 0: Don't be a *donkey*.

Discuss...

Godmode?

I assume you mean making your character all powerful and perfect rather than 'human'?

If so, then agreed

Godmode is... okay, have you seen Neo in the Matrix? If he was a CoH character, he'd be Godmoding.

Neo lifts his hand and stops all their bullets before altering the fabric of reality and blah blah blah.

Another example of God modding is:

Character A punches Character B on the nose, breaking it and causing blood to gush everywhere.

The proper way is:

Character A swings a punch at Character B's nose.
Character B ducks out of the path of the fist/Character B winces as the fist pummels his face, nose gushing blood as it is broken.

I have always thought of Godmoding as one player making choices and actions on behalf of another players character, thus forcing the other player to do what you want rather than what they want. Kind of like Zortels second example only I thought I would spell it out

Rule 5: Leave the hat alone

I'd suggest it could be summed up with two: -

Rule 1: RPing should be fun for you.
Rule 2: Your fun should in no way preclude others from having fun.

Rule 5: Leave the hat alone

Actually, that ought to be rule #1.

Really, the main rule of roleplaying is: Respect the right of the other players to have fun as much as your own. Don't hog the limelight or run your character roughshoed over other people's characters. Don't knowingly annoy, hurt or anger other players (of course annoying, hurting or angering other characters is not only allowed, but downright encouraged.) Wash behind your ears every day. Don't talk back to your parents. Be mild mannered and nice. Turn the other cheek, but don't back down from standing up to yourself. Wear a hat at all times except, possibly, in the shower. Be a responsible mathematichan -- don't drink and derive.

Wraith, Kult, Call of Cthulu are hardly classed as fun...
For the player who likes to see his characters suffer...perhaps.

Well, apart from Rule 4 : No stymie-ing.
Rule 5 : No forced relationships.
Rule 6: Keep within consensual reality.
etc.

Being incredibly powerful and god-moding are different things, Silver.

Although, that said, it does get a bit silly when nothing is a challenge. One reason I love Vampire; when all's said and done, you can still have the snot beaten out of you by a mere human playing his cards right.

Well, I'd consider Possession, Replacement of your Physical Body, Seed-Stealing without Intercourse, Time-Line Altering, Rule Changes on the Whim of Reality = God-Modding; and that's just from the books.

"God-moding" is sometimes used in the same meaning as "power-gaming". That said, I think it's preferrable to use power-gaming for power-gaming, and use god-moding in the sense of "without consent controlling other players' characters."

When D&D is done right, there's nothing more dangerous to a high level party than a tribe of annoyed kobolds.

Not really -- all of that is within the rules, and as such it happens with implicit consent of the players. God-moding is really more of a real problem in free-form (rule-less) roleplaying. It's basically the old "I shot you" "Did not!" "Did too!" "Did not!" conflict that rules were originally created to prevent in the first place.
