Don't you just hate this?
roll a blapper. best of both worlds. and strategies can change on the fly.
I would suggest an Energy/traps corruptor.
Good knockback from primary so you kinda have to think where you want to shove enemys before shooting and traps has a lot of nice tricks to play a lot of different ways.
Wow, I seriously thought I was the only person like that! I am a vet since a year after launch and I have yet to have a toon to 50. I'm serious...I do take long breaks but when I come back, I have trouble deciding what type of toon I want to stick with. My first ever toon is lvl 38. He's a elec/elec blaster but I wanted to start from scratch on a new server and I do like the noob feeling again.
I love to team, I do not solo much at all. Honestly, I will avoid soloing at all costs. I am NOT into AE. I love running missions and I do also like my toon to have some strategy. I tend to lean more to distance attacks but I do like the melee.
I should also tell you guys that, as for previous MMOs, I've always seemed to like the Hybrid class. Jack of all trades, master of none. So if there are any powerset combos like that in the game, please list it. Thanks.
problem with that is there are really no AT's that can do everything. you can get a couple combo type AT's like blappers, or spine scrapster(scrapper with some ranged attacks) but nothing that will do everything.
Funny how he mentions CoH and someone suggests a villian. Do people even read posts?
If you like visuals, i'd say roll a Plant/Kin. Fun and useful to a team.
My wife has a Fire/Ice blaster. Ice provides some strategy and Fire is very nice damage.
If you wanna try to master a toon, roll a dark scrapper or tank and figure out the endurance usage. lol. I've had no luck.
Two of my funnest toons are Ice/Rad troller (awesome team helper), and my Fire/Shield scrapper. Also, anything /storm.
Eryq2, thanks for trying to clear things up, but both CoH/V I will play. I should've included that, sorry.
I have touched /storm liked it very much.
Ill/storm controller. Soloing gets repetetive at the first few levels, but by the time you hit 20 you are a team. You will have a variety of tactics for each situation, multiple powerful but non-essential powers that enable you to overcome any challenge up to and including arch villains, and you'd have to try not to contribute to teams.

Oh never mind, phew.
The only part of the request that really throws me off is wanting a "plan b" for bad situations. Generally you need a melee set for "oh [censored]" buttons or, at least, a Nuke to throw.
Traps was brought up, that's a definate "thinking mans" set. Depending on how busy you want to be you can pair it with a blasting set on a blaster/corrupter or go for the Mastermind route. MM's are very busy and tactical (for CoX at least) plus fun IMO.
Dark/Dark corrupter. Lots, and i mean lots of toys to play with, many slotting options available. Good on teams or solo with the same build, excellent patron pool choices available.

Yea i really like the concept of MM's, but I just can't find a set I like. I've had fun with most all of them, just a few got a little boring at times. I think I'm just an altoholic lol. What would you suggest for MM primary? I've played everything and gotten to about lvl 14 with everything (on my main account. Right now I'm playing on trial accounts to find a few good powersets to play).
I'm thinking of going with Mercenaries. When I had them I remember really enjoying them. I refuse to play ninjas. I just don't really like them.
I'd suggest Thugs, Bots, or Necro. Bots is hard to get to 32, but once you get there you'll be glad you did. It's not painful or anything getting to 32, but you won't rocket there like other MM's. Thugs is generally considered the most powerful, but I find it too boring (aside from the Briuser). Necro has to be the most fun and interesting, to me. Zombies are fairly flimsy but can deal out some good damage. The Grave Knights are practically your own Broadsword Scrappers, and they can deal out huge damage. The Lich, to me, is the most fun of all the tier 3 pets. It's not a damage dealer, it's pretty much a controller. It has Fear, Holds, Immobilizes, a self-heal, knockback and solid range powers. Not to mention all of the pets can heal themselves.
I advised MM's to another person who was a major altaholic. Definitely advise them to you.
Another good option is a /Regen Scrapper. There's a lot of timing involved and it's not easy to survive as well as other sets (takes more skill, but can for sure get there). Plus Scrappers are just great.
Ice/Elec or Nrg/Elec blasters. You got range and melee, Ice offers holds as mitigation, Nrg/ offers KB, pick your poison and kill with it.

Sure, the devs are supposed to listen to their customers, mister business 101 out there. And if I decide to start suggesting that the devs change the game from being about superheroes and supervillains to being about clowns that is my right as well, and technically Paragon Studios is supposed to pay attention to me. But I hope strongly that they assume a meth-head somehow managed to hack into my forum account and make paper airplanes out of my posts, because I hope they recognize stupid when they see it. I assume they will recognize futile just as accurately.

Sounds like you should get something to 50 and try a Kheldian or Soldier of Arachnos, those are the closest things to 'hybrid' ATs in the game.

I second this, though I'll expand it to pretty much any blast set except Energy Blast with Dark Miasma, and possibly extend it to Defenders or Corrs. Particularly popular blast sets to mix with Dark Miasma are Dark, Sonic, Ice, Fire (Corr only), and Psi (Defender only).
You'll end up a jack of many trades with a good set of different toys, some wide-area soft control and some damn nice debuffs, which means you'll be decent solo and sought by teams.

So I really enjoy City of Heroes, and I've gone back and forth between being a subscriber and not playing it, but I always have this dilemma. I can never stick with a character. I don't know what it is, but I just can't. I know it's possible, I just need some help. So, if I list my playstyle below, could you help me out? If you could suggest something that fits it and actually describe it, that would be so awesome!
1. I like being valuable to a team, but not to the point where I can't even solo.
2. I'm fine with any type of combat really, ranged or melee.
3. I like having a little strategy involved in my character. If it's always going to be the some button combination over and over, that's no fun.
4. Having a Plan B is always nice. If something goes wrong, I don't want to be repeatedly screaming "I'm screwed! I'm screwed! I'm screwed!!"
If there's anything else you need to know in order to help, just ask the question and I'll respond ASAP
Thanks for all answers!

Positron's i13 letter: We are trying to make PvP more accessible to new players, while giving experienced PvP'ers the advantage that comes with formulating tactics around the new systems we're putting in place. PvP from now on will be on our priority list. If something isn't working out, we'll be in there tweaking it and making it work, for the entire future of the product, not just Issue 13.
I'd probably go with a troller. They are very active, require some strategy (bare in mind how easy most toons are to play and how they approach everything the same) and they usually have 1 or 2 contingency plans on the back burner.
Trollers I'd recommend:
/storm - very visually appealing and provides several ways to "skin a cat"
Any primary. They all get pretty repetitive in that you tend to cycle your "go to" control every spawn. Each one does have a distinct flavor so play what you like.
The reason I say storm troller rather than storm def or corruptor is because they have the "plan B" you're looking for in their aoe holds and they have amazing epic powers that make them very very powerful all round (ie jack of all trades, like you said you want).
Although to be honest, if you put some time and money into your troller they jump from Jack of All Trades to Master of Everything heh.

Trick Arrows.
TA/Dark, TA/Sonic, TA/Rad, any */TA controller combination, Bots/TA, just do it. You'll have access to almost everything in the game. Controls, debuffs, you can pick up pool power buffs if you like, damage is good for both you and your teammates, and you're never tied to teams in order to progress, you can solo quite nicely.
Go. Find the TA within you and let it out.
Dark/Dark defender.
Definately desired on most teams. And can solo to boot.

I agree with Largo, i have tried alot of different builds but my main is Dark Defender, it is the jack/jill of all trades. I can heal, rez, debuff, lockdown, and damage. Other builds will do each of these better but Dark Defender is the most well rounded.
My favs are defenders (dark) and warshades, and for redside masterminds (force/robot).
Champion The Community Server
Let me chime in here in support of a Mastermind. Specifically Thugs/Dark. Dark is valuable to teams, moderately active, and can support multiple strategic approaches. And Dark Servant is one of the best (non-minion) pets in the game.
Thugs are arguably the most team-friendly Mastermind primary now that the bruiser does knockdown. The enforcers attacks reduce defense (and can hold that lovely -Res proc) and their leadership powers will apply to any other thugs in the area of effect. The only sticky point is the Arsonist's attacks, some of which can cause some scatter.
But here's the kicker, you have two lovely variations on the 'oh $#!7' button: Gang War (superior agro-magnet and damage diffusion cloud), and Howling Twilight (auto-hit AoE disorient to minions, slow, -regen with a nice AoE rez as a side effect). I went with the Leadership pool and added a third such button with Vengeance. I can't think of any combination that turns an almost-teamwipe into overwhelming victory faster than this one.
Solos extraordinarily well, holds up very nicely on teams, supports strategic and tactical thinking, has multiple ways to get the job done, powerful stuff to fall back on when it starts going against you and your team.
And, seems likely that by the end of the year you can play it on whatever side you like.
Rad/Psi defender. The Plan B is "slow them all tremendously". (Lingering Radiation, Psychic Scream.) Plan C is "put a stack of three inspirations- Break Free, big defense, big defense" in your fourth inspiration column, and just hit F4 three times." (Plan C works on any character you play.)
For Rad/Sonic Plan B is generally Siren's Song, but consider that everyone does a lot more damage if you're on a Rad/Sonic.
Neither Plan B works on archvillains; that's why you have plan C.
Plan D is generally filling slot 5 with an Awaken, Break Free, Catch A Breath, and some sort of big Luck.
Mini-guides: Force Field Defenders, Blasters, Market Self-Defense, Frankenslotting.
So you think you're a hero, huh.
