I would just think the Devs would have a general idea of an amount of rares they want to be dropping, and if that # drops to 1/4 or 1/2 of what they are expecting...they would raise the drop rate. If people leave the MA or whatever and too many purples start dropping, then they lower it again. Am I wrong to expect this type of micro managing the game economy?
I've already stated my proposed "formula" for purples: you do it like the defense mechanic streakbreaker. The longer you go without successfully rolling a purple, the higher the chance that you will roll one becomes. Based on kills, of course. I don't see the problem with this, at the very least they could then maybe call their game "casual"

I think that is a great idea. So even if you start with a 1/1,000,000,000 chance of getting a purple drop, eventually your chances will get to the point where you will likely get one and reset your odds. Maybe it's just cause I have never had a purple drop, but this sounds like a great idea! Now wait a second for all the "experts" to come post why it's a horrible idea.

Why do you need experts? Just take that puppy right to the devs.

"Dear Mr. Posi, sir. You know those recipes you said were uber rare? I have this idea where they won't be uber rare anymore, and will favor hard core farmers. And I know you <3 hard core farmers."

Let the market forum know how he responds.

Because killing off the only reason hardcores play to satisfy the small minority of players who are convinced they are casual players and not people too lazy to be hardcore, despite wanting purpled out warshades, is a great strategy. Y'now, other than the fact it isnt.

We have had dev posts in the past that pretty much sum up purples =/= casual. Purples aren't intended for casual players plain and simple. I doubt the devs are going to spend any time setting up your proposed mechanic since they didn't do any of the "easier" things (standard code rant aside) that would have used existing code fragments to implement.

There is a real need for review of what is " common" or " rare" and what the cost is of all of it. It is clear that the market is out of whack. It is also clear that the market is designed to benefit gold farmers at the expense of players . I feel like the entire system should be reviewed, it is by far the absolute worst part of the game. I hate and dread using the market every time I have to do it. But maybe that is because I am not a greedy gold farmer sending my kids to college on RMT.

The market is out of whack because of people like you who refuse to supply it with goods and resort to whining endlessly about it. Capitalism isn't your friend, it isnt going to magically make you happier and wealthier if you dont participate in it, and it certainly isnt merciful.

Don't like it? Don't use IOs then.

What type of item are you unhappy about being difficult to obtain? How many similar items have you ever found while playing City of Heroes?

I must say that I disagree with your claim about the Market benefing "Gold Farmers" (I'm not ever sure what that means) because I by no means "farm" at all but have learned to use the Market to get the shineys (expensive or otherwise) by reading these forums.

I can honestly say that while I do get invited to tons of farms when I am on my Kin, I have only been on a few that friends have run.

You may have issues with the Market in general but I dont think Farmers are the root cause of your concerns
