This game is not like any other MMO. The Holy Trinity of Tank, Healer, and DPS does not exist. All of the roles are blurred.
Forget everything you learned in other games and keep an open mind.

It gets worse (and by worse I mean better) over Redside. Hybrid ATs FTW!
Woo! Go villains!
[ QUOTE ]
Blasters should behave as if they are Scrappers. If they can't solo a Chief Soldier, they should have their Blaster card revoked. They should love their Defenders, for Defenders make it easier to pretend you are a Scrapper.
Meanwhile the Scrapper should be off soloing the next mob because the Tank is too slow. It is generally accepted that at this point the Scrapper takes full responsibility for their own survival, or lack thereof, as does anyone stupid enough to follow them.
[/ QUOTE ] I like this.

My personal view of archetypes is closer to SpaceNut's than to the original posters. Mine is a more simple understanding of the archetypes:
Heroes: Attack bad guys.
Villains: Attack bad guys and good guys.
I currently have a significant presence on Virtue, Freedom and Justice. If you're idea of a good time is maniacally charging into every foe and seeing stuff blow up (friends or foes) then perhaps you should join me at some point. Send me a tell or PM
I'm hoping to organize some Task Forces on Test Server sometime soon because anyone can join Maybe some of you would like to join me. I understand my personal preferred play style isn't for everyone. But if you want action, explosions and a carefree gaming experience I'm your man.
[/ QUOTE ] Actually that playstyle is perfect for me. Whenever you have one of those TFs going, let me know.

Thats sounds like my way of playing the game. Anything in front of me is going to get hit till it drops then find another.

Works for me. If I'm playing something that can debuff it first, so be it - debuff, then hit it. Otherwise, "Charge". Or be sneaky and shoot it around the corner. Or shoot it around the corner and then "Charge".

Seriously, though, welcome to the game. As others have said, the OP states possibly what can be considered the classic roles, and some people get very upset when they're not followed.
As a personal note, it's one of the main reasons I left Paragon to go Rogue - I got sick of a team 'needing' the magic of tank-damage-healer. Villain A/T don't follow this as much (although many people play villains in this way and expect a team to function in this way, which usually results in me being told on my Corruptors or MMs not to 'steal aggro').

I'm guessing you're new here.

The proper response is to laugh and poke them with sharp sticks.

Well, my only question is, what prompted your post? Have you noticed large numbers of players on the teams you have been on ignoring their "roles?"
These roles are the very basic roles of each archetype, pretty much described in the loading screens when you are installing the game.
Experienced, good, inventive, or crazy players (take your pick) can go beyond these roles with impunity. The most important things any AT brings to the team is that they contribute towards the enemies' defeat, and that they do not contribute to the defeat of the team.
As long as you do those two things, you have a place on my teams.
New story arcs coming soon (ARC IDs will be aded when I finish the arc):
So, you want to join the Hellions? (level 1-14 Villainous arc)
Sparks & Steel (level 5-20 Heroic arc)
and
So you want to join the Skulls? (level 1-14 Villainous arc)

..and even the second part can be ignored and still a team can reap great success.
Smurphy, don't you assemble TF's (over VU2009?) and such where you require that every character, regardless of AT or powersets, contributes to the offence?
And aren't they usually wildly successful?

Oh yea... I approve whole heartedly.
Be well, people of CoH.
Sometimes I wish more players started out Redside, where AT "roles" are much more open to interpretation, and everybody's expected to contribute heavily to offense. Then, when confronted with Blueside ATs that seem to correspond closely to traditional MMORPG standards, they'd be able to more quickly recognize how much more potential and flexibility all ATs actually have.

Hi.
I hate when people think they know how I should play my characters.
I have controllers that can tank better than a tanker.
I have defenders that play better than some scrappers.
I have blasters that do a better job at healing that some "healers"
I have more than 1 of everything, and well. I play them how I like to.
I hope you stay and enjoy the game

I just wanted to get this out there.
Like the Subject says, its what I think each AT's role in a team should be:
Tanks should aggro the mob to them and try to keep the aggro from most people, especially the Defenders
Defenders should stay around the tank, focusing their buffs around them. However, if the mob begins to crumble away from the tank, the Defender should focus on the Blasters.
Controllers should stay in the back, and both hold the mobs by the tanks, and work with the scrappers by using their pets and single holds to "clean up the edges" of the mobs
Blasters stay in the back with the Controllers and do most of the damage dealing. Enough said
Scrappers role is to both to "clean up the edges" with the Controllers help and to protect the Controllers and the Blasters from the aggro that the Tank cannot hold.

Your views interest me and I would like to subscribe to your newsletter.
What is funny is the bluesiders who complain that redsiders don't know how to team and blame the villain ATs for being too vague.

The Smurphy ITF I was on basically prohibited healing.
Our number of defeats was still pitifully low, though. Sometimes you're just too good to fail

Blasters... Unload AoEs as soon as the spawn is mostly under control, then close in and use the powerful single target close range and melee attacks on the big guys. A Blaster at range is dangerous. A Blaster in melee range who knows what he's doing is godlike.
[/ QUOTE ]
QFT. A Blaster who focuses on melee attacks together with AoEs (aka a Blapper) can be devastating if played right. The only trick is keeping alive while you're dishing out all that damage and drawing huge aggro. For this reason I feel that Force Mastery APP is THE APP to take if you're playing a Blapper, mainly for PFF and Force of Nature.
Another important factor for Blasters I feel is target prioritization. You need to identify the kind of threats that need to be dealt with first, and quickly so. An example would be a mob going after a Tanker while he keeps aggro on the boss, and the Blaster takes out the mob with AoEs quickly before they become overwhelming for the Tanker, or focusing on an enemy with the most hp or with the most devastating attacks.
Here's my roles:
Every AT- Race everyone else to spawn. Kill it. If the rest of the group stays to finish off minions, jump to next spawn. Your survival's on you, but if you finish off about 90% of the spawn, jump to the next. Unless you aren't an AoE monster (read, unless you're a single target monster), in which you can wait and kill single targets.
These rules apply equally to Brutes and Defenders, Scrappers and Peacebringers. I play every AT as a race.
TW/Elec Optimization
Here's my roles:
Everyone- KILL MAIM BURN DESTROY SLAY ANNIHILATE can someone gimme a speed boost I'm running outta end SLAUGHTER MURDER BOOM SMASH CLANG CRASH PEW PEW YOU GOT THE TOUCH FREEM POW BLAU KABOOM DOOM CHAAAARGE!
Dear Outback,
Please enlighten us what you think the roles of Brutes, Stalkers, Corruptors, Masterminds, Dominators, Arachnos Soldier, Arachnos Widow, Peacebringers, and Warshades should be. All of us forum-goers have honestly had no clue what we were talking about or how to properly play the game until you showed up.
No really it's true. BillZBubba has been playing his Peacebringer like a Mastermind all this time and Spacenut has been playing his Stalker like a Brute. We are so very very confused.
I am guilty of tanking with my controllers

My teammates always think I'm joking when I say I'm going to do this, then they finish loading the mission to see "Mission Complete!"
