lol I met a newby 2 nights ago, had no vet badges .. him n his friend, they were leading a team of lvl 8-12s in kr n decided to go to sky for scanner missions, i didnt want to be the go here do this type so i followed along i had my lvl 10 blaster..
When in sky they spoke about seeing a detective for a scanner, mind you he had scanner in kr lol, so i sent a tell explaining nicely that once u have a scanner there is no need to see the det. in evry zone untill its bank time n he asks to see u... BTW he was a lvl 12 tank
[/ QUOTE ]
I was under the impression you did need to see the detective once to "get the frequencies" for the zone. Is that incorrect?
[/ QUOTE ]
You only need to talk to ONE detective ever, but what they say indicates that you need to talk to one in each zone. Damn liars.
[/ QUOTE ]
think you guys misunderstood what i wrote..
The new guy was under the impression he had to see every det in evry zone, he already had the scanner from kr and then went to see the det in sky..
hope this clears it up lol no one lied, it just newby misunderstanding and being cocky n rude to someone tryin to help lol

This makes me remember my first day in CoH.
After the tutorial Ms Liberty trained me to level 2. And then I got my first mission: "Defeat 10 Hellions in Atlas Park". I ran around a bit and noticed that the area I was in had different zones ... there was Atlas Plaza, where I started, The Promenade north of it and soon I was in Prometheus Park. I just couldn't find Atlas Park where I was supposed to look for Hellions (btw, AP was crowded with people and because of much lower spawn rates than today the streets were quite empty). I ran a little further, jumped down a wall and suddenly I was in Argosy Industrial Park (that's the far west area in AP, close to the war wall). Here I finally found some Hellions. Two of them actually.
Although I was still looking for Atlas Park I wanted to have my first fight and so I enganged them opening with my mighty Power Bolt (yes, I noticed that their description appeared in purple, but after not paying much attention to what was taught in the tutorial I didn't know what it meant ). Blue streaks of raw energy came from my hands and hit the Hellion. It looked awesome .... the Hellion however was not very impressed for some reason, draw his shotgun and shot me, taking a huge bite out of my health. I answered with Power Blast while the other Hellion with his Sledgehammer was advancing. I missed. The Hellion didn't.
I studied the dirt for a moment, trying to decide what to do next, when a nearby door opened. Another player came through and was immediatly attacked by the Hellions. He drew his Broadsword and quickly killed them (well, maybe they didn't attack him first, but he sure disposed of them quickly).
Then he came over to me and handed me a wakie. While I rezzed he told me, that I should better stay in the lowbie area where the spawns aren't as tough as those that downed me. I told him about my mission and that I just couldn't find the area where I was supposed to look for Hellions (my, I was really a n00b then ). He explained it to me, said good bye and then he teleported away.
He leaned back a bit, opened his arms, flashed and was gone!!!
Wow, that was soooo cool. How I wanted to be able to that, too. Being able to move from one spot in the game to a completely differrent spot in the blink of an eye. I was really wondering how it worked. I assumed that the power allowed for some kind of bookmarks you could set as your teleport target areas and that you were getting more bookmarks the higher you leveled.... and I wanted to do that, too! Teleport was so awesome, it was the coolest travel power in the game and I couldn't even imagine how people could take something as mundane as flight, super speed or super jump.
Well, I later respecced out of teleport and took flight.

I never said that you lied. I said that the detectives did. When you first get your radio, the detective says something about giving you the frequencies for this zone. Brokers have a similar comment. And every time you go to a zone for the first time, the detective/broker for that zone gets highlighted, and if you go talk to him, he says something about giving you the frequencies for this zone, implying that you can't use the scanner until you've talked to him.
I understood exactly what you were talkingabout. Because if you had said "blaster" instead of "tank" that newbie could have been me. The detectives do imply that you need to talk to them all. And they are damn liars.

I still am kind of a newbie. I started playing when I installed Windows on my Mac to play Warhammer Online -- City of Heroes had always looked cool, but my older computers couldn't run Windows well enough for gaming, so City of Heroes was not at the top of my mind by the time I got a machine which could run it. I couldn't tell you when exactly I first tried City of Heroes, but my oldest character is a Mace/Shield Brute, and apparently Shield Defense is new.
I didn't play regularly until the Mac version was released. I knew I liked the game from playing it in Windows, but rebooting all the time was a hassle so I had quit both Warhammer Online and CoH.
Now my Brute is level 50, and I made all but the last 2 levels outside of mission architect. But I get the impression that there is a lot I don't know about the game.
For example, I know almost nothing about Task/Strike Forces. I have no idea what you do to start one (outside of the MA that is). I know that I didn't get to do every story arc as I leveled, so I don't know if I just missed whatever leads to Strike Forces or what.
I've accidentally joined a few SGs and VGs, usually when I think I'm expecting a team invite and someone sends a blind SG/VG invite at the same time. I really don't know what the purpose to being in a SG or VG is at all.
There are certain levels of "newbish" behaviour that I have very little patience for. And much of it derives from an apparent inability to pay attention to the UI and the easily gleaned information contained therein. Information that precludes questions like "where is everyone?" or "where is the mission?"

No kidding.
Some kind soul finally pointed that out to me when I was lvl 27 or so on my first toon. I couldn't understand why everyone else in the game was playing faster than me and I was still out of end all the time. "How are they doing that?" I would ask myself. I thought the Fitness Pool was a luxury. Why would I want to run slightly faster when I can have this cool new attack? (I still resent Health a little to this day) Of course my first toon was a Blaster.
And to the OP: If that one guy actually knew he was a noob he wasn't that new. I didn't even know what that word meant when I started. (Or "nerf", or "powerleveling")

There are different levels of "noob"... There's "noob" in relation to a specific game, and then there's "noob" in relation to the genre, and of course "noob" to PC gaming in general. Being a "noob" in a particular game but not in general PC gaming one might be more than passingly familiar with the jargon.

It doesn't hurt anything to join a few VG's. When you find a good one (one you like), you'll be glad you did. The main perk is other players to help you and to team with you. It's a nice source of information when you have a question. Little things like where to go to get a new costume slot at lvls 20, 30, and 40 are nice to know. And you'll always have something to do when you log on.
Even a smaller group could be good if you like a more relaxed atmosphere. Just having one or two other people that you know in the game can make a big difference.
There are other things too like teleporters to zones (more important hero-side), inspiration bins, enhancement bins, crafting tables (for making enhancements), and the med bay teleporter option when you die. And some bases are just cool to look at....it's nice to have a place to call "home".

I was uber-noob. I knew NOTHING. Compared to me, everyone else was a vet.
My favorite type of newbie are the kind where they may be totally ignorant to the game mechanics, but their heart is in the right place.
What I mean is, they may not know about purple enemies, or how travel powers are earned and such, but by looking at their costumes you can see time and care was spent making it.
Their name is an actual word or multiple words, and not random letters or words with periods and x's. They often have a bio written and when they speak in chat, even though they may not know how to switch chat functions, they're still fairly eloquent and intelligent in their ignorance.
Those are the kind of newbies I'll gladly toss inf too, give them advice on power selection or even drag them along in missions to help them level up.
Unfortunately, in video gaming in general, that type of new player is few and far between.
It's killing season

What better way than to
Rid the world of all the walking waste ....
I hope that's the kind of noob I was.
But good lord...
I think I 4-slotted sprint because I didn't really know what else to do with the slots when I lvled up. (needless to say I needed a respec once I found out about those)
I had a full tray of inspirs and enhancements until at least lvl 10 because I didn't know what they were for.
Once I figured out to stick enhancements in those "slots" I used training enhancements until the 20s. DOs and SOs were a total shock to me. (the price on SOs seemed like it was totally out of reach when I finally found a store)
Reading the manual was no help....nor the tutorial. I was so new to gaming that even the most simple jargon was like greek to me.
But my most painful memory is being kicked from a team (the only time that has happened) in The Hollows because of the knockback on my powers. (en/en Blaster...sigh) They were apparently telling me to stop doing that but I had no idea what they were talking about. (It also didn't help that I didn't look at the chat box very much back then...way too busy looking at all the other amazing things) No doubt I was totally screwing up someone else's powers/strategy. At least the leader told me why he was kicking me for future reference....even though a big question mark was hovering above my head at his explanation at the time. "What are they talking about? What's 'KB'?"
That sense of rejection was intense. I still remember how bad it felt. I've never fully forgiven that powerset to this day and never play that character. lol.... I think I even suggested the ability to slot enhancements to stop KB. (not a popular suggestion)
edit: But that did make me the type of leader who will forgive the most egregious sins. I have only kicked people in the most extreme circumstances. (like afk in a mish when the mish ends and the team needs to move on to a new one)

I hate that. I recently quit a team because the leader told me to stop using my Primary with my Energy/Electric Blaster. Of course, that's where all my attacks were. If he knew a damn thing and was worried about the KB he should have told the Eath controller to keep things locked down so they wouldn't get KBd.

Heh, I remember being a newb.... I had a grav/storm as either my first or second character (don't remember which), and I'm standing there in atlas fiddling around with my powers when I get invited to a team. Turns out we're going to the 'sewers', wherever that is. So we go in, and looking back on it now it was actually a pretty competent team. We all ran around killing stuff and leveling like mad, but as usual eventually people wanted to get on with the game and the team broke up. One team member told me to go get killed and I would wake up in the hospital outside. To my newbish self, that didn't sound like a very good idea ("why would I want to get killed on purpose?" - it didn't help that at the time, the game I had been playing most often was diablo 2 on hardcore mode!), but I remembered that I had some sort of teleporter power that I had stuck on one of my alternate trays, so I used that.
Needless to say, I spent an awfully long time wandering around pocket D before I found the exit. Then, I had no clue which zone to exit into, so I ended up in faultline. I very quickly figured out that it was much too high level for me, but I couldn't find the pocket D entrance again. So I had to trek through skyway to the train - did you know that skyway is a very confusing zone to traverse on foot? And since it was the first time I'd used the train, I then got very confused as to why it wouldn't let me go in the out door. At this point, the most experience I had with the game was a couple hours watching over my brother's shoulder, which is the only reason I knew to take the train at all. I'm just thankful to the vet who told me that there was a train station in skyway, when I started asking in broadcast how to get back to atlas from faultline!

Good stuff.
I took my first character to 50 because it never occurred to me that you could play more than one at a time or that you could give up on one.
I'm also glad I'm not the only one that got stuck trying to board the train from the exit.
I figure things out pretty quickly, so I don't think I was ever a complete noob (I spent the entire time the game was loading reading and re-reading the game manual, which at the time was actually relevant)
I did make some mistakes though. On my first character I was still using training enhancements at level 22 because I didn't know there was a difference (I thought that as you leveled they would automatically change, I knew there were different kinds)
I made a Sonic/Ice blaster and deleted him because he couldn't solo at all (later to discover that Sonic/Ice is one of the best soloing blasters in the game)
I had Jump Kick, Combat Jumping and Super Jump on one character, and Flurry, Hasten, and Super Speed on another because I thought you had to start at the top and take them all in order.
I knew about the color of enemies names because I sort of paid attention in the tutorial. I kept running from orange bosses because I didn't realize that they conned higher depending on their rank. Thought he was 2 levels higher than me.
I was a newb, but I don't think I was too much of a n00b. I actually listened to people when they offered advice and a number of people helped me out a lot when I first started. As a result of my gratitude I try to help new players out myself as much as I can.

I had never even really grasped the concept of what an MMO is when I first started playing. Lessee....some of the things I did...
Zoned into Skyway at lvl 5-ish without realizing it. I then got scared and ran down an alley, only to be one-shotted by a troll.
I had to have my hubby (then boyfriend) explain in depth how enhancements worked, even after looking at the manual and doing the tutorial. Then he had to explain again...and again....
Ended up staying on blasters and defenders for a while, because I was nervous to get in melee range.
Never took a travel power with my first character I got past level 20. Also never took stamina.
Loved the Hollows so much, I tried to keep finding teams in there past level 20 on the same character...
Needless to say, my husband was very patient with me, and now I play more than him. I like helping new players to the best of my ability, although when they start possibly asking procs and percentages, I direct them to someone else...

Seems like a good sign to me

Agreed! I love seeing new players. They're the lifeblood of the game.
Freedom: Blazing Larb, Fiery Fulcrum, Sardan Reborn, Arctic-Frenzy, Wasabi Sam, Mr Smashtastic.
At level 16 I got teleport after I learned about pool powers and travel powers.
Had a real OMG moment on the Synapse task force around level 20 facing Babbage.
Learned about Stamina on the Sister Psyche Task Force around level 22 (/team Why are your end bars always full at the end of a fight, and mine is always empty?)
Also learned about Freakshow rezzing (/team HE GOT UP!)
Found out about stores and purchasing SOs around level 27
Found out about the magic SO store in Talos at 28-30, after ALWAYS going to the IP one which is very much out of the way.
Learned about pulling, herding, and more specifics of aggro around 30.
www.paragonwiki.com is a great source of information for this game.

He kept blasting the Clockwork ambushes while four of us were pounding on the construction site, but he was having so much fun none of us had the heart to tell him he was supposed to be shooting the boring pile of scrap metal in the center.
[/ QUOTE ]If you never defeat the Clockwork ambushes, you can pound on the construction site all you want and you'll never get the badge. He was doing the right thing. Who's the newb?
[/ QUOTE ]
um, you? You can completely ignore all the clockwork and still get the badge. In fact, a high enough character can solo the construct with single-target attacks only, hit absolutely nothing else, and get the badge.
[/ QUOTE ]
Right. You don't even need to destroy the construct, just delay its completion long enough for the event timer to end. A lvl 50 with a good -regen can solo it just by keeping the debuff up and smacking it once every 30 seconds or so, as long as its health never reaches full.
