Please Consider Other Super Science Power Ideas!
Ghost Falcon said in-game that barring fixes (and a small addition Jay might be making), the booster is pretty much in its completed form.
Positron: "There are no bugs [in City of Heroes], just varying degrees of features."
But they could sell me those items too in Science Booster Part II if they want ...
You know?
I agree about the slider changing being something that should be available to all.
I mean....super science isnt the only "origin" that goes through size changes or what not...
And why would you hold back on a truly great feature like that?
If you (developers) are truly trying to avoid the "haves and have nots"...this is not the way to go.
I am likely going to buy it, but I don't like the idea of this.
I mean...what did the others bring as a power? Mission Teleport, Costume change emotes (which we recieved some freebies too)...nothing that could make people unable to afford the extras go "Thats not fair, I pay $15 amonth...why don't I get this feature?"
Honestly. I think the choice of that as the power is kinda lame and cheats the subscribers.
My opinion. Its neither right nor wrong. Just a bit of $.02

THAT is what I was trying to say! That very well captures the feeling I'm getting. I've got more background on why I feel that way, but the main point is - this game does a very good job in people not feeling so much the have/have not. The sliders thing might truly compromise that.

I agree. Give the Super Tailor to everyone and give the booster pack purchasers one of the many suggestions made by several players as a replacement.

WARNING: I bold names.
I'm of two minds on this.
I look at the Super Tailor as just another costume option. It has no positive or negative effect on the game. To me, it's no different than the Cyborg, Valkyrie and Magic packs having auras, wings and capes for level 1 characters.
On the other hand, ANY character can earn auras, wings and capes on any character, eventually. By level 50, they have all of those, except the ones that THEY opted out of. There is nothing similar in game.
It doesn't make much of a difference to me. I'll be buying it either way. Getting the Super Tailor before the booster comes out, and a different power would be neat, but wouldn't change my opinion.
That said, self buffs and enemy debuffs are either too powerful, or not available often enough to be useful. Remember that, while Mystic Fortune is useful, and one person can keep it perma on a full team, it does nothing solo.
If you want something "sciency-ish" but not broken, how about a self-heal (animation could be taken from Aid Self or Crab Spider Serum), unenhancable, ignores buffs (to both the heal and the recharge), has a 5 or 10 minute recharge, and 30 or 60s after using it, it damages you the same amount it healed? Kinda like a reverse Spectral Wounds.

Novelty costume pieces I can understand being part of a microtransaction. A pair of gloves or a jacket of higher calibre than the original options doesn't generally restrict players from making a character, but simply allows newer options for those willing to pay the extra dollar.
However, changing the height of a character is something that's been long requested by the player base. It does NOT apply strictly to the science origins. The fact this booster is somewhat lacking in terms of creative costume pieces and actual powers makes me suspect that the more fundamental aspect of the height slider was tacked on to "force" more people into buying it, even if they've no interest in anything else in the set.
Not to get off-topic, but when the game was released, issues had real weight to them. Just go back and look at the amount of content given during the original issues. Now the game is beginning to turn every new feature into a microtransaction, on top of billing us monthly and expecting us to buy a new full expansion in the near future.
I like CoH as much as the next person and will most likely buy the booster and the expansion, but if NCSoft is determined to charge us at every turn while providing less and less content for free then I think they run the risk of losing a lot of their market when other superhero MMOs begin to surface.

Micro transactions have been verified as being in CO and probably DCUO (since it's SONY, and they LOVE MT), so it seems like this is the new way of the MMO market.

Microtransactions have been here since the addition of the wedding pack. I have NO problem with that as most other people have no issue with it.
It (The other booster packs) is pure fluff, while cool...its not so cool that people go "Thats not fair to subscribers"...
The Super Tailor isnt in any way going to affect the actual combat or what not...but it is (as far as I read) an awesome feature.
I am not trying to get something for myself for free, don't mistake that, you might as well consider this pack bought and paid for by me. I love costume options....
But that feature is more than just a costume option...
It is a feature that people have wanted for some time. That right there is why there will be a case of haves and have nots.
If it were something that only a tiny % would be all agog for...then I don't think this would be a bad idea. But anyone who doesn't have it...will want it....and those who pay $15/month per acct. and can't afford another $10/acct. deserve that feature.
Choose something else. The rez thing, no animations required, seems like a perfect fit to me.
Just....Don't do it. Would someone please just think of the children?

QFT re: SoE: back in my EverQuest days, SoE LOVED to announce paid expansions OFTEN. The usual converstation in game went like this:
EQ Player 1: "Hey! Did you hear about the NEW EQ paid expansion?!"
EQ Player2: "What, has it been two months since the last paid expansion already?"
There is a lot that you can [censored] about in CoX, no doubt about it; but the rate of new unpaid content and feature influx honestly ISN'T one of them. No other MMO to date adds new 'free' content at the rate of this Dev Team; not even WoW.
I swear I'm going t odrown in the tears of the rightously wronged players.
Jebus people.. shell out $10 and buy the damn booster if you want to change the height and model of your toon.
Gah..
Because the post below got longer than I meant, I wanted to post first a quick "Oooh!" to the "reverse spectral wounds self-heal" suggestion someone posted above. That would be verrah nahz. Make it so that it can help cinch the odd "whoa this boss is kicking my" fight, but not replace regular healing.

...? Well that wasn't any help. Which is a first for this thread - thanks everyone!
I'm all for the MicroTransactions. I think this game does a great job in offering things that are bennies worth buying, without being so awesome that the game is lesser without buying them. (Exception: I'm addicted to the $5/mo jetpack. I'm not sure that's really not a game-changer, but then that touches on a whole other topic for me.)
I disagree that even a large % of new features are turning into microtransactions. I was really stoked by the things out in I13, I14 and I15. I am in love with Mission Architect and what it offers people, and every innovative plot or even lovingly presented "Origin Story" I play by a dedicated (though perhaps inexperienced) architect just reinforces that. (pst: spend 15-30 minutes on the Tutorial from my sig to see MA's potential through my eyes). And I am on pins and needles waiting for the sliders since I've been talking about it at least twice a month since September when I came up with a really cool character idea (okay, cool to ME!). I just wish that was "Yay for all players!" and not just "Yay for all players who can easily foot a $10 purchase per account!"
I am deeply grateful that I can easily afford all of the microtransactions without having to sacrifice more than one sandwich at home rather than a weekend lunch out. And that I can keep supporting a game that has, in my opinion, earned that support. That also makes me very aware that not everybody can, so I try to look out for them. Other players are also part of this game, and what strengthens their experience, by extension, strenghtens mine.
I never forget that. As a rule, I'm very grateful that the Devs remember, too.

Super Booster / Super Tailor ? Ready to buy !!!!!

I can see the reason for not having some sort of self-buff. Given we just got a castable buff with the Magic pack, I imagine they're trying to avoid any future buff powers, otherwise the players who have all the packs will end up with a ton of them and have significant advantages over normal players.
But the self-rez is something I'm into. We need one of those to hang onto. I don't die very often, but when I do it'd be nice to have a special rez clicky, even if it has a recharge of 2 hours.
I do agree the super tailor should be a non-pay feature. But I'm buying the pack anyway.
Dispari has more than enough credability, and certainly doesn't need to borrow any from you.

I'd like to say I wont be buying the pack because I don't support this feature being withheld from the majority...
But I'm too honest about my fanboyism. I'll definitely buy it.
That being said, I think the feature is too much of a comic/superhero staple to make it's access limited. Heck, even Batman uses now and then.
I really never saw why they didn't let you change height/body type when pickin a new costume from day one. Like people have said, its a comic book staple. Not just Banner/Hulk. But one of my first toon ideas was a "robotic suit" that was huge, and the rider was small. When I found out you couldn't change body type or even height I was crushed. Also they added in for free the howl costume change... duh, turning into a werewolf would be a lot cooler if you were a normal sized human and a giant werewolf.
As for the self rez thing. A way to make it balanced and make sense rpwise, maybe make it an "innoculation" you give yourself, so use the serum costume change emote, maybe just change the colors of the serum and the glow around the body. then the next time you die/ko you can rez. Kinda of like soulstones in WoW. It is a balance because you have to remember to do it before a fight(and maybe when you log off it goes away) and makes rp sense, cuz if you are already ko'ed how would you rez yourself, with a gadget?? that would be tech. The animation for the rez itself?? you just stand up, just like the awaken insp, basically it is just a perm awaken insp. So you are still dizzy ect. Since it does the same thing as awaken, but you have to use it before the fight, it doesn't take away anything from the game if ppl don't get it either.

Considering the amount of "free" stuff we get every issue (except of course i15). We can't really complain, these extra transactions pay for new free updates. And really its only 10 bucks :/

Actually as long as we get the Science Booster Pack within the next few weeks then it'll be following the same exact pattern the first two did. Both of them made a brief appearance on the Test server for a quick beta followed by several weeks before they were made available for purchase.
I'm not going to start worrying about this one unless we don't have it say by August 1st give or take.

Philosophically speaking I more or less agree with you. I can understand the logic and reasoning behind the idea that we should have the height and body type editing features as freely available to all.
On the other hand I have to consider this thing from my specific point of view. I have enjoyed playing this game for so many hours over the last 5+ years that me having to "donate" another $9.99 to our Devs for these costume features (that I have also wanted for years) is going to raise my total cost per hour that I've paid for this game by maybe a penny or two if that much. I'm willing to make that kind of sacrifice...

[/ QUOTE ]It's not just costume pieces though, there's a fairly big bug that will happen if you switch to huge with the costume emote to a regular size body with a standard costume change, which will make your character look all sorts of glitchy, that needs to be fixed before they can roll this baby out.
That, and I think there's a couple of odd Icon issues that could stand to be cleared up beforehand too.

I've been thinking about it, and I realized I feel very strongly that the ability to change bodytype and sliders really needs to be something available to all players, and not just those who buy a booster pack. I've been wanting that since Day One, as it didn't make sense to me that you could change everything except for height, and perhaps even do the full "Banner/Hulk" thing.
While I'm not sure all players want to be able to make those changes to their costume slots, I think players deserve it. Because it's just that freaking neat. I can't explain it more than that -- but I suppose it's like comedy: if you have to explain it, the point is likely already lost.
That said, as Castle said the enhanced tailor was chosen because he was stumped on what power to make, I would like to earnestly offer suggestions on other Super Science powers!
<ul type="square">[*]Serum: A self-only random temporary power. You could use most of the animation for the costume change emote for the injection. The effects could be the same as the Magic random effects, but reduced by half (since it's a self-activated power, as opposed to a buff to another). This really wouldn't be seen as repetition, I believe.
[*]Revivatrol: A self-reviving "concoction". The Tech booster pack allows you to blow yourself up in a blaze of glory. The Science pack could allow you to revive yourself! I'm not sure what timer this would have to be on to be balanced against what's currently out there. Two hours? This would not require animations to be created.
[*]Unleash Rage: A single-target ranged enemy buff/debuff. Throw a dart (can use the animation in the existing Science origin starter power) at one target enemy. If you hit, the enemy receives an increased recharge and movement speed, but reduced To Hit and Defense. Alternatively, it could be an ally boost that adds to recharge and damage, perhaps with a crash.[/list]
I figure three's a magic number, so I'll just start with that. I hope there's a chance they may be considered, and that there's still development time that can be allocated.
Thank you very much!
