Yes, a lot of names that include some very overworked nouns and adjectives might not be available, but that doesn't mean there are NO names available.
If you want us to throw suggestons out there, what AT? What Powersets? Any particular origins or backgrounds?
For example, just this afternoon, I started a new character named Southern Belle on Infinity (name based on backstory).
Or I guess you could come to the forums and rant....

1) My memory is fuzzy, but I'm pretty sure steps ahve already been taken to free up names that are not being actively used by players
2) How do you know you're not just picking the names of players who are actively running around? (not to mention names to which they have more claim having thought of them first)
2.5) Also, It's difficult to judge the veracity of your claim without knowing which names you were attempting. What if you were choosing unimaginative "dime a dozen" names?
Here, I'll be as NICE as I can about this.
There are somewhere between 450K and 1 MILLION single words in the English language.
So even just using an already existing ONE WORD name, there are that many possible names.
If you add a second word, that makes it 1-2 MILLION possible names.
Just think real hard about that for a minute, and then try something more....
creative? Nah, too mean.
original? Still too mean.
Let's go with "Obscure".
And in the worst case scenario, you can always MAKE NEW WORDS UP.

Tell us what specifically you WANTED to name your character, and give us some idea about it (not just powersets but appearance, background, origin, any of your already-existing ideas) and maybe we can throw some names at you that aren't taken.
Remember that if you've got "the perfect name" but it's already in use?
Someone was just as "clever" as you. Don't go complaining because common words are already in use, there's a reason why they're "common".
Try something uncommon.

Some other names to try out.
For Duty (best if used on a patriotic type character)
Maiden Gold (maybe use a female robotic type that is gold in color)
Dum De DumDum (maybe a cop or detective)
Dramatic Hamster (need I say more?)
That four names off the top of my head.
The names Schlichtedfunk, Voogelmaas, Doominate, Tocatta and Fugue, Boxer Rebellion, Shovel of Pwns, Nuts McAuliffe, and Axe of Violence are all availalbe on freedumb.

I've been making loads of characters over the last couple weeks... by the time I thought of a name I liked and tried it... it was always available! 
And I have to agree 100% with Zek's list, about half of those I generally use myself before I find a name I like... and to reemphasize it, I'm gonna just freaking quote his list just for the hell of it:[ QUOTE ]

I've had a few names taken, but I do pretty well.
Really compound names are your friend, spaces are your friend, as others have said foreign spellings are your friend. Also oddly unlike other MMOs real world human names are often free. I got my Real Name just two weeks ago on two servers. Sometimes though it is better to use the check name feature before you create your character, it tends to save a lot of heartache.
Edit add: Sofa King is generic bait and reportable. I still have a PM from the last time that became popular.

I ALWAYS do this. I always come up with the name first, and everything flows from there. But that's just me.
i think i'll see if Crush Maim Frolic is taken and grab it for my own use. It's a name that just screams srs bzns.
