I've been jumping at non-AE PUGS lately. Hell, I ran the Praetorian arc on a toon that already had Portal Jockey just because it wasn't AE.
I started leveling my first Tanker this week. Every night I log in, grab those from my global friends list that want to team up, then start sending out Broadcast messages and whispers. Usually within a few minutes I have a medium-large team. We then start running whatever missions people have. If no one has any, I'll hit up one of my contacts or the police band.
I've already met 2 new people to add to my global list and had several people add my Tanker as a local friend. Non-AE teams are out there all the time, it's nowhere near as grim as the doomsayers would have you believe.

This is the right thing to do. Whenever I'm on my stalker, I try to make a mission team (though it rarely works out, oh well).

I only do pug's. I hate teaming with the same people all of the time, it is boring. I like getting together with a bunch of different people every time, I think it is fun. I rarely get a bad team this way, contrary to popular belief.

My solution: start a pick up team.
Amongst the problems cited by many with AE are:
1. Discourages non-AE teaming
2. Powerlevel new players into high level noobs
As a veteran player of this game, I plan on starting a pick up team at least every other session I play. I plan to invite mostly complete strangers, and particularly newish looking players / characters. I plan to offer advice and strategy about play if asked.
My hope is that other vets pick up the habit. I have no problem with AE, I have no problem with farming, but it seems that the lack of teaming opportunities outside of AE has a player solvable solution.
A journey of a thousand steps starts with the first. See you in the game.
