Whats a good MM combo for someone to learn MM with
bots/ff is easily the easiest MM to play, so easy in fact that i found myself getting extremely bored with it and deleting it.
thugs/dark on the other hand was a blast to play, youve got the inherant defense the tier 2 pets offer plus the -tohit from dark, a great heal for your pets and teammates, and its not bad on endurance either
Bots / FF is easy to learn, but as Painful said, extremely boring.
I would recommend Thugs / Dark. It was my first Mastermind, fairly easy to learn, and a blast to play.
@Celestial Lord and @Celestial Lord Too
My first MM was a bot/ff. I am invincible.
Where to now?

Yeah, bots/FF is my main and I love it. I don't find it boring, you just have to come up with interesting ways to use Force Bolt. Also, it helps greatly if you take your first two personal attacks. This adds to damage (a great thing when you only have two or three pets at low levels) and gives you a button to mash too.
Something like Bots/Dark, Thugs/Dark or Merc/Dark will probably give you a good feel for the AT though, as well as being a bit more standard in play. Again, you should probably take two of your personal attacks to boost damage and give you a bit more to do.
/Pain Domination like /FF only buffs at low levels, and /Trick Arrow is kinda slow getting started, I didn't care for it at all.
I like Bots/Traps myself. It's a bit more active than /FF but still has good defense and status protection. Bots take care of themselves pretty well so they are easy to learn on. If you want a more active secondary, try Bots/Dark or Thugs/Dark... the Bots die less but the Thugs do a lot more damage at lower levels so they level faster. After level 32 either one does massive AoE damage, but before that the Bots are pretty much all single target while Thugs get AoEs at 12.
Cascade, level 50 Blaster (NRG/NRG since before it was cool)
Mechmeister, level 50 Bots / Traps MM
FAR too many non-50 alts to name

I'd say start with a Thugs/Pain, but then you might be spoiled with everything (and everyone) else not hitting hard enough.

If your build is for great team play then your best primary will be thugs, they can buff other pets, mastermind or not. For your secondary, pain is easily the most benefitial to team play if you don't mind being...well a heal/buff bot.
If you want a more well rounded set, take poison for your secondary, you get to buff and debuff, you'll also be able to solo quicker but you won't be that MUST HAVE team unit like a pain secondary is. Still good though.
I'd stay away from ninja and storm though, ninja require micromanagement and storm..well storm doesn't play well with others generally. If you do want to build a tankermind though, storm makes for the best.
I started with ninja/poison. It's intensely fun (IMO) but easy? No not really. however with a ninja/poison MM you'll either learn pet control or die horribly quite often.

My first MM to 50 was my Bots/FF, after attempting a Ninja/Storm. The Nin/Storm made it to 22 and has since been deleted. The Bots/FF is very forgiving to learn with and once slotted is practically unkillable. Keep everyone bubbled and you'll be providing your teams a level of mobile fortification and fire support that should probably be illegal.
Please don't make the mistake of Ninja/Storm right off the bat.

or a Necro/Traps...
I'm duoing with my friend as a Bots/Pain MM and we're basically unkillable at this point. The Protector Bot shields + Maneuvers + World of Pain, combined with all of our healing, makes us ridiculously durable.
I suggest Necro/Dark. The combo is pretty easy to get the hang of, and provides some wonderful mitigation and absolutely superb crowd control.
Just remember to take stanima, hah.

Personally I found the zombies harder/more annoying to control than Bots or Mercs, but - as always - YMMV.

Sometimes the best starting combo is not the easiest. Sometimes it's the one that makes you learn your class/AT sooner. At least, that's my opinion.

Well yes, Zombies are very hard to center in one area without switching them to passive or causing them to focus on a single target.
Plus they tend to...."freak out" when targetted PBAoE DoTs (such as burn patch or Rikti Money Gas/Nemesis Gas) are layed down.
Bots/FF are a blast i think nothing cooler than the graphix of your bots being repaired and upgraded and they lay a smack down also.

I agree and often play that way myself, I was just making sure the OP knew what he might be facing.
You mentioned team play, but be warned: if you plan to solo pre-32 at all, Bots/FF is painfully slow to level. After that final upgrade though, soloing gets better. Honestly, I wanted to claw my eyes out.
Teams always love the bubbles, of course, no matter your level.

I have never made a MM before and would like suggestions on a good solid power set combo to learn on but still be a good team player.

I was playing my level 35 Corruptor, then wanted to try a MM build seeing all the wonderful pets peeked my interest. So, with that being said, I have now achieved a level 48 MM Bots/Traps and have not looked back since. The big thing that I was worried about was having to navigate and delegate my pet commands. It turned out that I really did enjoy this extra control over my pets. I am still learning new tactics as I can only go to level 4 on EB's right now and still have not been able to solo an AV. The big thing with Bots right now is that Protector Bot thing going on that keeps them colliding with their seeker drones and they get stuck and cannot move around them. Supposedly this will be fixed come i15 but who knows?
The biggest thing that I did noticed though was the infrequent invites I got for teams. It appears there might be a slight bias towards some MM sets out there. Not sure why really but it seems some people have had bad experiences with MM's and their pets. I would think that having a MM on a team would be a good thing to help everyone stay alive with their awesome barrage of pet power.

Yes, this is fixed on Test Server right now and it works great. The Seeker Drones have had all clipping turned off. Nothing gets stuck on them now.
I had a problem on test where seekers would go through walls. Did they stop that from happening? Nothing like having one slide into a wall, and see a mob in another room.

It has little to do with power sets. MMs are disliked by a lot of players because they've had experiences with bad MMs that can't control their pets. MMs are really bad aggro pullers if they don't know what they're doing.
From my experience, though, my bots/storm gets into groups more often than my ninjas/pain. People seem to think ninjas are useless. They used to a long time ago but now can be one of the most potent pets damage wise.

Hmm... sounds like there is a downside to that, after all.
They removed collision detection from the Protector Bots Seeker Drones. This was finally done to fix the glitch where the Bot would get stuck on the drone, and not be able to get unstuck.
Now it looks like we've replaced one glitch with another...
