How many would still be here without the market...
I'm probably ok without the market. If market was not introduced, then the invention system would be entirely different. Or maybe there won't be invention, but replaced by something else. Either way, there would be new things with or without the market.
I would be here. I bought CoH, not CoWW. I don't like having to sift thru recipes and salvage, go create, back and forth.... When i do have to use WW to offload, i sell and go play some more. Make alts, level them. Would PvP but without uber builds its almost pointless.
The market is the reason I haven't made a new arch type in months.

My City Was Gone
I can't begin to comment on this question because of two things.
1) I wasn't around before the Market was implemented in this game.
2) I have no idea what the game would be like at this point if IOs and the Market were never put into it. For all I know, there wouldn't be a game to play at all.
But, with that said, if the Market suddenly disappeared, I can't imagine I would miss it.
Liked it alot initially
The luster died off quickly. Its far too easy and offers little challenge. If anything it feels even more grindy than the regular parts of the game.

[/ QUOTE ] This is exactly how I feel.
The more I play the game, the more I prefer to solo and work on better builds. Without the market, I don't think I would be able to get all the IOs that I want.
I would still be around regardless of the market, but the market does make the game far easier for me when it comes to inf.
I'm assuming that if there were IO's and no formal "market" that players would have set up and organized a market-of-our-own in game by this point....I'm sure some of that would have spilled to posting in the Forums.
I'd be gone.. Without IO's and the market, this game would not have kept my attention for more than a couple months at the most.
i would stay. until next game.
the market turned me into a farmer.
I still play my TF everyday, and its kinda refreshing.
If there were no market and no other way to get IOs, I'd be gone.
The market works but its not the reason I stay.
I would still be here even if they reverted back to release. I was here then and I will continute to be here.
My life is to busy to get tierd of the game. I dont get to play it much, and I dont just play this one game. I have other games on my PC and just about every console that has been released since the 70s.
This game was around for a while with no WW. WW didn't make this game. If there were no IO's, noone would want IO's, therefore you wouldn't be missing anything. You'd be playing the game just as everyone did before WW.

Heh, I was against the market when the ideah first arose. It's ok when you need fast cash, other than that I could care less if it was here or not.

I don't think that's entirely true. IOs addressed, or attempted to address, something that was missing in the game. Pre-IOs, a lot of people were wanting something more, a greater depth in character design and development. I think the Skill system was the first attempt to accommodate that desire, but it didn't make it beyond the drawing board. What we ultimately ended up with were IOs.
As to whether or not the market keeps me playing? No, it doesn't, not on its own. But it does play its part.
I'll put it this way:
Before even considering another MMO, it would absolutely have to have:
1. A level of character customization that was at least on par with City.
2. The ability to create multiple characters.
3. Some sort of market system.
So does the market keep me here? No... but I won't go anywhere else that doesn't have at least some semblance of the same thing.

Not the market specifically, but the invention system in general is part of why I enjoy the game as much as I do. I played for a few months back in I4 and I5, then left when ED came around. I gave the game another try last year and the invention system and the ability to pimp out characters with it is a big part of why I like the game again.
Well, i think, the IO system and WW are two different things. I love the IO system but i don't like my IO'ing dependant on WW and other peoples greed. As i've said before. When asked if WW keeps people here, and the answer is "i love io'ing my build", i feel like those are 2 different beasts. imo.

[/ QUOTE ] I disagree. Without a market I think getting all the IOs I want would be almost impossible.

Before there were IOs, there was a substantially vocal segment of the board population calling for "ph4t l3wt". So what you're saying about what people would want is untrue.
If they added a market without loot, then yes, that would be pointless and no one would use it, because you could get all the non-loot stuff at a store.

In theory, you could just do it with merits or tickets, assuming they put everything for sale at the appropriate vendors. For some people that would make it "take epic long periods of time" instead of "impossible".
The market fills the role of offering non-epic-long IO acquisition for people who can't play a metric ton of TFs or story arcs, but who are willing to play the market mini-game. That makes it extremely useful.
I think the OP's question sounds like it's looking for people who like the market itself. Sure, the mini-game works because people are looking for IOs and a few other rare things, but given that reality, it does exist as a dependent mini-game, and some people like it on its own merits.
I wouldn't really play the mini-game for its own sake, even though I have no enmity for it. It's the IOs that hold my attention, and not the market that provides them.

I'd still be here even without the market. Its the friends I have made here and the fun I have writing and roleplaying that keep me here. On the other hand though, I love the market. Getting those big scores, logging in and finding a patient bid on a shiny has rewarded you, the joys of playing a billon influence build scrapper, all thanks to Issue 9.
Long live the market, it is a magnificent means to the end of having toons that do stupidly difficult things with style.

Inventions are great, but I think Im still here IN SPITE of the market, not because of it.
Theres plenty of things that feel like work in the real world to do, so doing more of it in game does not appeal to me as a well spent night of my off-work time.
That said, I do use the markets, and have been ebil in my days, but find spending time in game in the markets very dull compared with beating up mobs and clicking buttons.
If all I have to log on for is market transactions, I aint loggin on that day.

My thoughts as well. I don't care about the market one way or another. I want the IOs. And currently, as the regulars here know, I'm still arguing that the reward rate for marketeering should be the default rate for earning advancement. Drop rates are too low, making the market a necessary evil until the devs decide to allow everyone who DOESN'T play the market an even break.
