I was here before the market (even if not by much) and by no means do i need the market still here to play. It is nice to be able to buy other peoples surplus stuff though.

I'd still be here but my toons would not be as fun and different one from another in the same AT.

Plus spending rather irresponsibly is fun (was getting close to my first billion and I caved in, respec'ing 4 toons over the weekend and finishing 2 builds to go back to 700 mils lol)

i wouldnt say the market, but the whole io system and the ability to build your toon.

The possibilities afforded by IOs in general kept me interested. The market just supplied the funds needed to realize those builds I dreamed up.

Actually, the market provides a platform for players to exchange stuffs. Since the IO system contains so many items, it is impossible for individual players to acquire what they need. A system needs to be in place for players to hand out stuffs they don't need, in exchange for stuffs they want. I don't think the fundamental intention of the market is to make it a stock market to earn big money, although it can be used that way.

While I agree in principle, this market is pretty clearly set up in a way that encourages it. In particular: double-blind bidding and listing with limited price history. That design seems unusual enough to need to be a deliberate attempt to make the market a kind of game of its own, and the prize for playing is big rewards.

One of my favorite things in MMOs is crafting. I enjoy taking the time to learn how to make things that other players will use to make their game more fun for them.

I was here before IOs and the market. And got bored pretty quickly with nothing to do but fight more mobs (or worse fight the same mobs over and over again with alts).

As what I call a casual player (<10 hours per week) the market allows me to make money that I don't have time to earn any other way. And it allows me to enjoy the extra benefit of some income through selling my crafted items without having to spam Market chat channels and find people to trade with.

So, yeah, without the market I'd probably have already cancelled my account like I did the first 2 times I tried CoH.

BTW, in my opinion, the design of the market crossing servers was brilliant. It helps to even the economy across the entire population. Otherwise heavily populated servers see vastly differenct prices for the same items than less busy ones. But that's probably a different topic of discussion.
