Windows 7

I've been having trouble running the game since upgrading to Windows 7. I realize that's not too strange, except that plenty of other people seem to do just fine with it, and I'm not seeing many posts about it being a problem. Stranger, my roommate and I both have the same problem, despite not having anything related as far as computers go.

At any rate, my problem is that it can't seem to load any of my characters. It goes really slow after I select one, and then eventually fails. What's really odd is it works fine one time if I uninstall then redownload, but after that one time it then downloads something on my next try, and won't work again. The exact same thing happens to my roommate, even though his computer is a custom-built desktop and mine is an HP laptop. Anyway, just curious if anyone else has a problem like this, or any ideas. I've installed all updates, and new drivers.

I'm assuming you two are on the same router/modem/switch/two cans connected by a string, correct?

Yes, there is that connection.

Than I would check there first, since it's as good a place as any, and it sounds like a connection problem while trying to zone into a...erm, zone.

Power cycle the thing and see if that helps. Then move inward (local intranet...your two systems) from there.

This is really too broad a question. The reasoning, yes many people do have 0 problems running Win 7 on this game, but that's because The Win7 RC runs on the same basic kernel as Vista SP2 and Windows Server 2008 SP2. However, there are alot of caveats to add to that.

Windows 7 does quite a few things different with that base than Vista does.
Windows 7 while a "Release Candidate" has not been through the intense testing that Mobo, RAM, video card, etc manufacturers will put it through in the next few months.
These manufacturers will use multiple setups and make several modifications to drivers and software only to have a portion of users describe the exact issue you are describing. Why?
Because it's impossible to know every configuration of hardware, software and accessories and to prepare for every poor interaction. And that's on a fully realized OS. Companies spend millions on technical support for this very reason.

On Windows 7, you don't have this kind of backup because it's not October yet. People like myself who do this testing and attempt to break the system over the next few months should definately be trying Windows 7. (I've installed it on 3 laptops, one virtual pc and a mac already) People who don't know how to fix these issues during a pre-release should not install pre-release software.

We have a saying "When you live on the bleeding edge of technology, you're going to get cut a few times."

As much as I enjoy CoH, the improvements to my general quality of life with 7 over Vista make me happy enough having it, though that's partly because Vista hammered my system really hard. I'm mildly surprised that it /does/ seem to have all been Vista, but based on the fact that everything runs smoothly, that appears to more or less be the case.

At any rate, I realize there might not be a simple answer. If there isn't, that's fine, but I'd rather ask here and find that out than not ask at all. Sometimes someone has had a similar problem, and come up with a solution that works for them. It's just an off chance hope, but one that's worth typing up a few words for.

Also thank you to Mid, I will at least give that a try.

I though that I had read in an article that Windows 7 would have an xp compatible mode. Maybe give that a shot.

It'll eventually have an XP compatible mode, by running XP on a virtual machine. This requires CPUs that can handle virtual machine emulation in hardware, not all Intel CPUs have this, and it will be a download from Microsoft and not come on the install disks.

[/ QUOTE ]Not to mention it doesnt run 3d applications like CoH. So virtual xp isnt a solution here, even if it was it would still be dog slow. I have actually been running virtual xp and virtual vista on my windows 7 box. While it is impressive there is still alot of stuff it just cant do. I am mostly testing it out for deployment of custom made images.

Heh, I just installed Windows 7 myself and am in the process of downloading CoH as I type this....76 minutes to go

I've been picking at this a bit. It turns out that running in Windows 95 or 98 compatibility mode works, though the cursor's messed up some. Going to play with it more, but I thought I'd mention that.

I've been Running Windows 7 RC since it came out and only had graphic issues with COH .. make sure your using the latest Nvidia or ATI windows 7 drivers. of course making sure you have updated firmware on your router might help things along also.

AMD Athlon 64x2 Dual Core 6000+ Chipset
4GB DDR2 mem
3.10 GHZ
Nvidia 9500GT graphics card.
Windows 7 is running Direct X 10

Double check your drivers and make sure you have the newest set. Both my laptop and my desktop did this with 7 using the drivers that windows loads on install. After updating them though they both look normal.

Edit: I should also add that those drivers came through Window's Update, I didn't pull them from the Nvidia's or ATI's site

Are you attempting to run CoH within a system folder, such as \Program Files\? If so, do not, as it will NOT work. In Windows 7, Program Files is sandboxed. Any downloads a program installed in there tries will go to a virtual folder, and the game will not be able to access it properly, especially after closing and program.

Install it elsewhere and it'll work fine.

*shrug* I've got CoH running from my Program Files folder on my Win7x64 install and it's working fine. Then again, I just copied the directory from my old XP install and re-imported the registry values. Maybe that has something to do with it.

I have mine in Program Files as well and installed mine from a CD (Architect to be exact). I also have no issues running it from that location on Win7.

It'll work fine right up until you have a patch download. Then it might suddenly stop working fine.

I've had a couple of patches installed on both the live and test clients in the Program Files folder and nary an issue. *shrugs* To each his own though.

Already been through a few patches. Test resides there are well and you know how often that was patching with the beta of I16. Haven't seen an issue.

Why the hell anyone would weant to use an OS that won't let you play CoH is beyiond me. I've got a brand new rig sat like a paperweight next to my old rig, useless till i can collect a copy of XP from my local store this week. the Vista I foolishly bought for it is now in a reverse tug of war with same shop, as i want to return for a refund and the shop managers being an ***.

I'm having no issues with my Vista 64-bit system or the Windows 7 64-bit install on the same computer using a different HD. Both of those use the C:\Games directory for installation.

I'm also having no issues with my old XP system or the Windows 7 32-bit installation on it using a different HD. On that Win7 installation I purposely put the game in the Program Files folder as well as the Test Server load. I've not had any problems with game updates on either the Live version or the Test version.

And I'm not running the Win7 RC on either system. Both are the RTM versions, downloaded through TechNet. Glad someone (EvilRyu ?) pointed out the special they were having on subscriptions this summer. Best birthday present I could have bought myself as far as I'm concerned.

If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.

To the OP, Your symtoms do sound like it would be a network issue. Two Completely different systems with the same issue, gonna be the common denominator.

You may also want to look at 3rd party programs that look at the data moving between your client and the game servers. I ran into an issue a while back with the predicesor to the Titan Network Tracker that caused what looked like sever lag in game. Turned out the devs changed something in the back end that cause the tracker to peak CPU usage at 99%

As far as the OS it's self is concerend I've had great sucess with it, even to the point of having it perform better than XP on systems that It really shouldn't run on.

And I've never my self had an issue with running the game from the Program Files or Program Files (x86) Directories, but I've heard of some horror stories about that with Vista, which turned out to be permissions errors with Vista pre SP1
