Manipulation experiment
I don't listen to him eitherÂ…but I hear people talking about him on a daily basis. I don't really care if you think he (or the restaurant owner) is succesful, as that is completely subjective. Though, apparently you do find him successful, just not as successful as Steve Jobs, so you don't really think much of his success.
If everywhere I go people are raving about a particular restaurant, I can safely say the owner is succeeding in his goal of creating a good restaurant. I'd feel like a fool if everytime someone told me how great a new restaurant is I responded with "Well, it's no McDonalds!"
Maybe the owners of the wildly successful Thai restaurant I love are failures 'cus their restaurant only appeals to the small niche of people who enjoy Thai food.
Country music artists have never really achieved any appreciable level of success because none have sold as many albums as The Beatles.
This argument is silly.

I realized that when immense wealth and power were declared not indicative of success. I almost wanted to reply with "You Fail TEH Real Life Shiny" at that.
That they went onto argue the size of the audience, is well pointless. The only point was that it was big.

Yes, his numbers are impressive .. But overstating his rating numbers to make your point does not validate your argument - in fact, that you exaggerate them (whether intentionally or not) shows us the opposite - that you are either not paying attention to the actual 'numbers', or that you are twisting them for your purposes.

So this thread is about Rush Limbaugh and Jimmy Carter conducting an experiment to manipulate viewship ratings?

If you view Rush as the voice of a political ideology, then measuring how much money he made doing it is like measuring how successful a resturaunt owner is by measuring the thickness of his hair.
He is, in my opinion, no longer the voice of that ideology. Once upon a time, he had a much more signficant support base among its adherents. Since that ideological voice is what I know him to tout himself as, I do not find him successful. Sure, he's a commercial success, but I consider him a failure at what he once set out to achieve.
This is why I find your pride at being compared to him humorous. That you can't understand why I'd think that just makes it better.

I met a traveller from an antique land
Who said: Two vast and trunkless legs of stone
Stand in the desert. Near them on the sand,
Half sunk, a shatter'd visage lies, whose frown
And wrinkled lip and sneer of cold command
Tell that its sculptor well those passions read
Which yet survive, stamp'd on these lifeless things,
The hand that mock'd them and the heart that fed.
And on the pedestal these words appear:
"My name is Ozymandias, king of kings:
Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!"
Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare,
The lone and level sands stretch far away.

Actually, what this thread has become about is testing for my own curiosity how totally willing to wander away from a thread AF is. He's done it many times before (with me at least). He'll pursue disagreement on tangents and sidebars without limit as far as I can tell. When he responded to me on the Limbaugh tangent, I figured I'd run with it and see how far it'd go. I'm a little surprised we didn't manage to derail the thread into space the mods would have to intervene on in terms of political discussion. While we've gone far afield, we managed to not tread on the mines there.

You guys do know that Moderator 08 has deleted some posts in this thread, right? You're not going totally unnoticed.

Is there a trail that shows when a post has been deleted somewhere? Just curious.
EDIT - NM, I see it. I had posts deleted in another thread without that notification (posts that I don't think were nearly as bad as the stuff being slung in this thread, btw!)
There are two ways that posts get 'deleted by the mods'
#1 is the Mod-edit which leaves the post in place
#2 is the nuke, which removes the post and all replies to that post. Very often catching many posts that dont need modding.
#1 is used if the thread is generally OK
#2 tends to be used when an argument is raging out of check, such that its too much work for the mod to edit each post.

welcome to the wonderful world of arbitrary enforcement!
I've had posts that even made me blush live long fruitful lives, while other completely innocuous ones were sent to feed the forum monster.
From years of first-hand observation I've noticed that directing a barbed post at a fellow forumite who prefers to handle their own business, Evil Ryu for example, will garner no rebuke.
Direct a much milder post at a thin-skinned type who's preferred method of discourse is tattling to Daddy and *poof*, things tend to vanish.

B_L_Angel: You might consider that this isn't the first time a discussion like this has happened, with roughly the same participants. I've seen people [I don't remember if any are in this thread] make a statement, get their arguments ripped to shreds, leave the discussion and make THE SAME STATEMENT two or three months later, presumably in the hope that the other side has left or gotten tired of arguing with them.
I ignore a lot of people- I've actually opened a new thread and seen that it starts with four "you are ignoring this user" posts in a row, from two or three different people.

Thank you for the kind advice, and sorry I missed it earlier. If I were to take your advice, I would have to put most of the people in this thread on ignore.

For a while there was trading in between my buy and sell points, but it usually dried up and went back into my control.

I always used to claim that this sort of manipulation couldn't be maintained, and this piece quoted above is the reason why. All of the trading should have shifted to be within his price points and stayed there until he got tired of buying things and not selling them. That's what my econ 101 professor told me would happen. That's what logic and common sense tell me should happen. That's certainly what I do whenever I find myself facing that situation in the market. What I have learned in the past couple of years though is that, in this game, for our particular market, there simply is not enough competition to break this kind of manipulation quickly and consistently.
Part of it is the low volume. Part of it is the low stakes. People just don't care. I mean, they care enough to come in here and excoriate everyone, but they don't care enough to price their items appropriately and buy patiently. Most markets really are self-regulating. Ours isn't, not as long as the overwhelming majority of people insist on selling low and buying high (because they're in a hurry, or they want to be generous, or whatever).
EDIT: I keep doing the same thing. I read an interesting OP, respond thoughtfully, and then later check the rest of the thread and discover that it has gone so far astray that my post is completely out of place. Sigh. That's what I get for spending too much time in real life and not enough on the forums.

Way off topic but the man has an audience of between 20-30 million people on a daily basis
[/ QUOTE ]
Rush has always listed his audience numbers per week to skew perceptions five-fold in his favor. His largest audience was in 2003 with 20 million listeners per week (4mil/day) and the current stat is 14mil per week (2.8mil/day). Impressive numbers but nowhere near this 30mil number you've imagined into existence.
On topic: makes me wonder how much of your market claims are likewise exaggerated or pulled completely out of thin air.
[/ QUOTE ]
Good to know. Whats the source ?
And on to topic, It validates the point I was making that he has an enormous audience.
[/ QUOTE ]
Google Search of "rush limbaugh ratings 2009"
"Given how often he gets quoted by politicians and media, Limbaugh remains the Man. He has been for two decades and still draws more than 14 million listeners a week."
Yes, his numbers are impressive .. But overstating his rating numbers to make your point does not validate your argument - in fact, that you exaggerate them (whether intentionally or not) shows us the opposite - that you are either not paying attention to the actual 'numbers', or that you are twisting them for your purposes.
[/ QUOTE ]
No matter which side of the pale you are on, Rush has his finger right in the middle of the sore on all most all issues. That's why the dittophiles love him and the dittophobes hate him.
