Fodder for the Canon: Ask your lore questions here

A couple more questions.
Are the Nemesis Automatons that pose as real people powered by steam? Or do they use some other power source? Since they don't belch steam, and they fool so many people, I'm thinking that they don't use steam at all.
Second question, how exactly does Rikti telepathy function?
[/ QUOTE ]A really efficient steam machine wouldn't need to expel the steam, but would instead allow it to cool and condense internally and re-use the same water again.

Which would violate 2 of the 3 main laws of thermodynamics.

Hmm in a world where people fly, Freeze foes in blocks of ice, generate Fireblast that nuke foes you bring up Thermodynamics logic?

Assuming it wasn't previously asked in this thread: To what maximum height could the hero Atlas, grow? Also, was he able to reduce his height to within normal human parameters (i.e. 7' tall or less (give or take)).

I would kill for a weekly column. Also, keep in mind that there surely are plenty of questions that he can't answer for a variety of reasons. Imagine if someone asked on day one why the Rikti invaded and Manti popped up to explain every single detail of I10. I'm sure we'll be seeing answers ala "Ask again, someday."

A weekly coloumn would be nice, or an entire section of the webpage on game lore with its own little database to search through. That way you dont get search results from RandomHero123 on "My idea for Rikti is...blah blah blah". A site with official info only would be nice.

Frankly, I'm disappointed at the low number of posts and page views. This sort of thing is more exciting for me than I15.

1) Where IS the Rogue Isles island chain? In some places it says 50 miles offshore of Rhode Island, in one other place 500. (Which frankly makes more sense. Having another country be west of Long Island makes less sense than having one north of Bermuda.)
[/ QUOTE ]
I've seen in a couple of places that the Rogue Isles are near Bermuda, which at one time probably made it a British colony, just like Bermuda. They were originally called the Rogue isles because of the pirates that called it something-akin-to home and the lawlessness that ensued.
Their proper name being the Etoile or "Star" islands. Respect your homeland! Also, Avatea posted over on the Euroboards re: a similar thread to this. Manticore: more light!

They also understand how their steam machine -- the reactor and the steam turbine it pushes -- doesn't vent steam but uses cooling tubes to recondense the water for reuse in the system.
[/ QUOTE ]
...and how do those "cooling tubes" work?
I've never seen the plans to a nuclear sub, but I know perfectly well how every power generating turbine in this universe must operate. Heat moves from a place of higher temperature (in this case, the reactor core) to a place of lower temperature (in this case, it has to be the surrounding ocean water). While this heat is moving, some of it can be harnessed to do work (in this case, generating electrical power which moves the screws and does other things onboard).
The efficiency of any engine in existence is capped by its theoretical maximum efficiency. This limit depends on the difference in temperature between T-high and T-low (measured in Kelvins). The TME is equal to 1 (T-low/T-high).
So the greater the temperature difference, the more efficient the engine may be.
SOMEthing has to carry heat away from the system. If nothing does, then T-cold rapidly increases until it is the same as T-hot. Then the efficiency of the engine approaches zero and it stops producing useful work.
So each and every time you see power being generated or work being done, you can always look for the heat sink. For your car, its the radiator in front. For a coal-fired power plant, its a river or lake next door. For a nuclear sub, its the ocean water. For a steam locomotive, its the atmosphere. (Steam locomotives simply vent their steam, rather than re-condense it. This is one of the reasons why they are so damned inefficient.)
So for the specific steam engines were discussing, Nemesis automatons, if they dont somehow vent their steam, then they need another heat sink of some sort. (Say, has anyone else noticed that Dan eats a lot of ice cream at his desk and makes frequent trips to the restroom?) If not, they quickly would stop working.
The quote at the apex of this little pyramid implies to me some sort of closed system in which the steam is re-condensed somehow without a heat sink. This is where my thermodynamics quote came from.

Also, look at Kurse(sp?) of the Faultline 'super-arc'. The most powerful Lost in the game (being the sole Lost AV) doesn't even resemble the normal progression of Lost to Rikti anymore. And Kurse quite obviously works toward his own ends.
When did the disaster that made Dark Astoria what it is today occur? One of the plaques for the Authority badge places the event before 1953, but Infernia's dialogue in the Lady Grey Task Force would seem to place the event after the disappearance of Omega Team in 2002.
