Just picked up badges 1300 and 1301 for my badger: Claire-Bear on Champion. One more thing crossed off my list of goals.
-
I'm sure someone has already considered this but using this tech to capture and create a library of the city zones would be a great way to save another slice of the game. If only the camera were a little faster. Can you imagine trying to pan and fly through IP or Nerva?

Quote:I second what Arcanaville said about the mouselook. It's difficult to get used to.I'm still not used to mouselook without inverted Y-axis so I'm afraid my fly-thrus still look like they were taken by a drunken bumblebee, but this should give a very rough idea of what's possible here. My base is pretty spartan, its just telepads and storage, and some small amount of experimentation, but the idea is clearly very sound.
This little trick has made me insanely happy. Yay... And now I'm sad again. But less sad because I know I can save something from this game I love. Now we just need a place to share these demorecord files so people could take base tours of everyone's bases at their leisure.
ETA: Thank you, Black Pebble. Thank you for sharing this neat trick and thank you Arcanaville for posting about it. -
Thanks for running this. I finally have Hybrid unlocked. Now to just find time to run the other trials I'm missing.
-
I think I'm completely hidden behind Pep Rally. (Claire-Bear) All you can see are her ears.

Thank you for being a part of our community and not just the policeman at the gate. Good luck, Freitag. I hope your future travels are amazing.
-
Thank you, Zwil/Andy. Gonna miss you and your hats.

I joined City of Heroes because several of my RL friends played. This was just after ED and the massive backlash from players. My friends had been on Victory so that's where I made my first toon. And I never got a chance to play with them. They left and I had just started.
A few months later I had this silly idea for a toon I wanted to try with the new teddy bear ears costume piece. I didn't expect to stick with that character so I made her on Champion. I found a group of folks to run with and had the time of my life. Then my next toon idea came up and I made it on Champion. A few years later, when server transfers became available, I moved my original main toon to Champion for nostalgia's sake.
While I've made the occasional toon on other servers, this has been my home. I've had some bad times here. I've earned the ire of a few people. But I've had too many good times to count. The epic night we took down Rikti dropships in Steel Canyon. Getting the "joke toon" up to fifty: my first. Becoming a member then leader of the Paragon Mafia. Hami raids, mothership raids, Tanker Tuesdays, TFTuesdays, Speed Katies...
I've had tough times in real life and I've always known City of Heroes and Champion server would be there to help me cope. I was looking forward to the next issue and the one after that and then the ones that followed. I was looking forward to being here with all of you. Now I'm standing in Atlas Park with a protest sign and a few dozen friends.
I still have my list of things I want to do before the lights go out and I'll start on those tomorrow. For now, I'm going to lift a glass to this game that I've loved for six and a half years. I hope for a reprieve. I hope for world peace. Maybe I'll get one of the two.
I love you Champion and I love all of you who make it what it is: home. -
This is bad news for me since this is the only way I have to pay for the game. (No bank account or credit card.) Amazon does have the 30-day cards but I still have the same issue regardless of whether they have the 30- or 60-day cards and it seems like a silly step to me to have to buy an Amazon gift card to then buy the CoH time card.

Updated from 11.4 to 11.9. (Windows XP, 32 bit, old card)
On the good side this cleared up some issues I've had over the past few months. I was even able to turn my graphics up from Early Hanna-Barbara to just a little past 80s-Afternoon-Cartoon-Block in quality. My FPS improved by about 5 fps outdoors to 10 fps on a mission map. I've also not crashed out due to a graphics issue yet.
On the bad side I've noticed that at a point during play my FPS will bottom out and nothing short of a restart of the game will fix it. I can't find a specific pattern yet although I've seen that it happens somewhere between two to four hours of play. I've also seen it happen if I swap over to Chrome on some occasions.
There is a really, really good chance that some of my problems here are caused by simply having an ancient computer that's see a lot of wear. (And not having enough memory on the video card.) I just wanted to add a little to the discussion in case anyone else noticed a drop in their FPS similar to what I've noticed.
The game is playable and that's what I care the most about. -
Cole isn't modifying Duray's memories in the sense that he's rewriting them. Look at it this way. A clone of a living being will be born with zero knowledge and zero memory of its DNA donor. If you want that clone to think it is the original, you have to put that knowledge and those memories into it. Either they are extracting the memories from the dead Duray, although that seems unlikely since Cole crushed his lil head, or they have some sort of near-real time memory recording method which Cole puts on all his key troops just in case.
When the new clones are grown in growth acceleration chambers, a la the Olympian Guard, the neural programming is uploaded to their brains. The techs doing the process would then just remove the tapes of the last 30 days so Duray doesn't have any idea how badly he's screwed up over the last month. This keeps him from losing confidence and, maybe, questioning Cole's ultimate plan.
I've no doubt that Cole could have planted the idea for the Hami Seeds being sent to Primal Earth in Duray pointy-little head. With all the brainwashing tech and psionics at his disposal, it would be an easy enough task and he wouldn't need to keep killing Duray, although he might be doing that anyway just for fun. If he did plant the idea, then the whole thing was one huge play put on to keep rumors flowing through the troops that Cole is badass but caring. On the other hand, I'm of the opinion that he's just being an opportunist. Duray screwed up; his plan was lousy and counter to Cole's orders. Cole is picking up the pieces and making the best of the situation.
As for Cole not being such a villain, keep in mind that this is the guy who, as far as we know, killed his best friend then had the unmitigated gall to marry said friend's sister. That's villainy on a Shakespearean level. -
Quote:Allow me to introduce the Maritime Prepositioning Force employed by the USMC: http://www.msc.navy.mil/pm3/mpf.asp. While I was stationed at Camp Lejeune we went on an exercise in Honduras where we unloaded these ships, cleaned and tested all the gear, and put it all back where it could be used should it need to be. This was done on a yearly basis. The exercise itself serves the double duty of maintenance of the gear and training for the rapid deployment of equipment. How, exactly, are you dropping an entire MEU on Rome without the resources to establish a beachhead? If you've got all those marines and equipment assembled in one place (no small logistical feat), and they're going through the portal device on purpose, they're going to take as much fuel and ammunition with them as they can. If you're having the ships carrying the MEU randomly hopping through the portal, they'll still have enough.
The MEUs themselves are formed from existing units. IIRC, they're together for a year with six months of training followed by six months of active deployment to sea. (Please remember that I wasn't in a MEU and this was twenty years ago and I've slept at least once since then.)
Before the Gulf War in 90-91, the Joint Chiefs were polled by POTUS about how quickly they could get a force into country should it be necessary. Commandant Alfred Gray quoted three to seven days depending upon the size of force required. When I was in the Corps, there were always units on twenty-four hour alert status. These are battalions who are trained to pancake some pancake up.
Quote:I'm more worried about the fact that the Marines need to boil all their water, and they probably can't eat any food but what they brought with them. Also consider the morale difference. The Romans are fighting for their home and their loved ones. The Marines have to be thinking that they'll never see home or their loved ones again.
The fiction writer is correct that there'll be a rash of suicides in the Marine camp.
I disagree with the morale issue simply because basic training tends to weed out the sort of person who would totally give up in that fashion. There would be some, certainly a few would make it through basic and others might develop mental issues in theater; but look at the history of armed conflict with the Marine Corps and you won't see a lot of suicides. You might see some desertion but not a lot simply because they wouldn't have anywhere to go.
"Shut up and soldier" is a phrase I've heard my Army buddies use and it would apply to the Marines as well. Dealing with the stress of such an extreme situation would be made much easier by simply concentrating on 'the mission' and worrying about extraction afterward.
Quote:Well, being an honorably discharged Marine I'll take a stab at this.
I was in communications working in Regiment and Division level communication centers so I wasn't infantry. Still, I completely agree with Steelclaw's assessment. Unlike in the movies, Marines aren't superheroes nor are they completely disfunctional man-children playing with expensive, deadly toys. They are professionals trained to do a dirty job. Many Marine officers are intelligent, well-educated, and prepared for unusual situations. Everything Steelclaw outlined jives with my personal experience as something a well-prepared commander would and could devise.
Finally, I'd like to point out one thing I think might have been overlooked by many of the folks so far. A MEU would have a compliment of combat engineers. I spent a year assigned to 3rd CEB in Okinawa. I've seen some of the things these guys can do to change the complexion of a battlefield. They don't even need anything more high tech than some axes, picks, and shovels to get the job done. -
Quote:I've always been a fan of this Lazarus Long quote from Time Enough For Love by Robert Heinlein in reference to a modern sort of Renaissance Man:What makes a good and practical Renaissance person in today's world? Can there even be one?
Quote:A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects. -
Quote:Lucky. I was stuck programming boring old medical insurance software for 17 years before the company decided I was the expendable one. Thanks everyone. Today's the big Four Oh.
I started working in the video games industry when I was 20. Man, I have been making games for half my life.
More importantly thought: Happy 40th! Forty is a great age. I enjoyed much of forty. (Forty-two coming up for me in a few days. W00t!) -
Quote:Both Help and Combat tabs removed and no perceivable improvement. Some people have reported that deleting the combat tab from the chat window has helped them. And if the processor is not busy processing combat messages to the chat tab, that's a little more processing time that can be put towards graphics processing.
Could someone point me toward a reliable memory test for a machine running the 32-bit version of XP Professional? Bonus points for a test that doesn't have to be burned to a CD/DVD first.
Also, I've read that the 32-bit version of XP has a hard limit of 4GB of memory but there is a potential workaround. Is this reliable, advisable, and stable for running CoH with? I happen to have a fourth 1GB memory stick (assuming it still works) and an open memory slot. -

Steps taken today to move toward better performance:
- Caught up on Windows updates. (I was a couple weeks behind.)
- Removed old video drivers.
- Ran Driver Sweeper in Safe Mode.
- Moved files off my primary drive to open it to 51% free space.
- Set Paging File to 0, ran a defrag on the drive, reset Paging File to 2048/4096. (This was a general performance enhancement suggestion posted on the boards years ago and I try to do it often.)
I'm too broke to afford much in the way of system upgrades. My hope is still that I can keep the game playable for little or no cost. Thanks for the help so far. If anyone has any further suggestions, I'm willing to listen.
Edited to add
Played for an hour or so running missions and have not seen an improvement from the way the game ran yesterday. -
Quote:This might be slightly difficult considering this message on the Driver Sweeper download page: Attention - Guru3D Driver Sweeper has been discontinued as such you will not find any download links here any longer.Install Driver Sweeper but don't run it yet, uninstall your current video drivers and software, reboot into Safe Mode and cancel any hardware wizards, run Driver Sweeper and let it remove the remnants of the old drivers, reboot into normal Windows, cancel any new hardware wizards, install updated drivers.

Quote:Ironblade,Well, we need more information. Go to this post and start with the part about CoHHelper. The game had a major graphics update with Issue 17 and it's possible your computer simply can't handle it. If the hardware seems capable, then we can continue with other things (like what else is running on your computer that might be causing a problem).
I was hoping for an answer to my question about what /graphfps 1 (Swap) is measuring before posting any system info because I didn't want that to get lost in the process. I realize now that I muddied those waters myself by including too much information to begin with.
Don't misunderstand. I'm grateful for any and all help and will be willing to provide whatever info is necessary. But I've posted all that info before and know how much of a wall of text it is. -
About the time Issue 18 came out I started having difficulty in game with graphical stutters and some weird rubberbanding around areas with groups of players or large amounts of NPC activity. I posted about it and contacted Tech Support but eventually gave up for monetary reasons. Thus followed a three-month hiatus but I missed the game and came back in January. Recently I've started trying to track down the cause of this trouble once again to see if it's something I might be able to fix with my very limited resources.
One of the tools that was suggested to me last year was /graphfps with the flag set to 1. I'll freely admit I'm not the smartest computer user in the world. I am smart enough to know when to ask for help. The first step to that, for me at least, is gaining a better understanding of the diagnostic tools. If I can answer technical questions more clearly, I can get to the root of the issue quicker and easier with whomever is helping me. I grok /netgraph and that's been mostly in the green outside of raids and certain TFs.
According to Paragon Wiki, /graphfps shows four specific things depending upon the value you pass it: swap, CPU, GPU, and SLI. I'm fairly certain I understand CPU and GPU. (The memory activity of your CPU and GPU respectively.) I'm unfamiliar with SLI and swap. What do those two items measure?
For the curious, here's what I'm seeing now. With swap (/graphfps 1) I see red spikes that correspond to the flickers/stutters. For instance, I have a group of Rikti monkeys surrounding my brute. Said brute one-shots a bunch with a PBAoE. My graphics freeze at the instant of impact, a measurable pause, then the graphics resume as the character begins to recover into the neutral combat stance. Swap shows a major red spike or spikes during that. I get similar stutters during travel through zones with corresponding red spikes and occasionally horrible rubberbanding.
ETA: Just did a little testing. I get the same red spikes for CPU and GPU as I do for Swap. -
Quote:I doubt I'm the first to have this idea but this specifically popped into my head as I was reading this thread:5) Adding an option to display the real world time would be rather handy for me.
Wrist Watch (Fixed Price Temp Power)
Several versions could be produced with different displays and slightly modified animations such as a pocket watch, digital wrist watch, a Praetorian Loyalist Commemorative pocket watch, a flip phone, a genuine Longbow Junior League decoder watch, a Rogue Island ferrymans time piece, etc. There might also be call to develop a version that displays the In-Game time. Maybe the themed versions display local time and In-Game time. The digital might display local time as well as GMT. The flip phone would display date and time.
Hero Description: Sometimes the best weapon a hero has at his disposal is punctuality.
Villain Description: Cant case a joint properly without knowing the time.
Cost: 10,000 inf (or similarly low amount)
Animation: Character assumes a neutral stance and gazes at wrist. At the same time a watch face displays on screen with the current time displayed.
Number of Uses: Unlimited.
I realize this is a fluff item but it could be fun and being able to click a power icon to get the time beats trying to remember a slash command. The Waiting emote already includes looking at a wrist watch.
I'll go back to lurking now. -
