Windows 7 and City of Heroes
Ahhh. Well maybe that's the culprit.

Never use windows update for graphics drivers but that being said the beta drivers maybe worth a shot ya never know.
[/ QUOTE ]
If it's for an NVidia card, in this instance you do, as per the NVidia Windows 7 page. The drivers that Windows Update installs for NVidia cards are prerelease Forceware drivers from NVidia.
I got the drivers for my 9800 GTX+ from Windows Update, and I haven't had a single graphics issue with the game yet.
Ahhh they're going to improve service, sweet. Dawn of a new age it seems
Well, I've been meaning to get the W7 beta installed on my old Athlon 64 box, but I keep getting a CDBOOT code 5 error. I've tried four different discs at four different speeds in two different burner apps and have had no luck, so I've spent the last three hours struggling to update the BIOS on this machine (I lack a floppy drive). What a nightmare.

CoX runs perfectly for me. Not a single issue. W7-64 with a 9600GT on the Windows Update drivers.
Issues I do have:
CSS FPS issues - but this seems to have worked itself out.
No X-Fi drivers for it (no surprise considering how long it took to get Vista drivers), but there is an unofficial PAX version that runs almost perfectly on W7 without some of the advanced features.
This is possibly the easiest, most stable OS beta i have ever used from MS.
As an aside, why is it always necessary to have these idiotic OS arguments in any thread like this? I'm sure the thread title says "Windows 7 and City of Heroes.".

It's true.
And Win7 has already shown itself to not be the worst thing on the block for me, and I still haven't found time to test gaming with it. As a work OS, though, I think it'll be ok, barring a few ancient apps that won't run.
Folks like to argue, especially on dis here intarwebs.
Win7 will not being going down in history as the worst MS OS ever. In order, those are Win3.1, WinME and Vista.
Be well, people of CoH.

i was able to install x-fi drivers for my fatal1ty card, in the properties you can have it run as a vista install under the compatibility tab. it install just fine and i was able to have sound again.
also careful of backing out 181.20 nvidia drivers, i had installed them as well and got the flicker, so i backed out of them and tried logging in to CoX and the splash screen was birghter then normal, same with the char select screen. and when i got into the city, i was nothing but a white screen and my ui.

Thankfully Bob was not an OS.
Just to chime in, I have Windows 7 running in Boot Camp on my Macbook Pro and everything is working perfectly.
I think I quite like windows 7. It got rid of some of the annoying vista things I didn't like. It's also very snappy which, considering it's a Beta, is very impressive.
I finally got the ati drivers working by rolling back to 8.11 vista64 and checking both opengl options in CCC, otherwise I had some flicker. One of the selections is missing in the 8.12 drivers which leads me to believe this is an opengl issue which will probably only get weirder.
Now that I've got things working I don't know what I was really hoping for, I'm still getting "stuttering". I guess I was expecting that it was related to something I had running on my vista install, apparently not.

I initinaly started with the 8.11, but it was even worse back then. Prerelease WDDM made it a bit 'less' flickery, but it still is unplayable.
But, since other games seem to run extremely well on Windows 7, i put CoH in the corner for a while

I had lots of snap-crackle-pop on the Vista 64 drivers. i found the PAX drivers from a post on the Creative forums about people having the same issue as I. <shrug>
Has anyone else experienced an issue where most of the graphics settings say N/A?
I just got around to installing Co* again after moving to W7 at the weekend and was surprised to see that turning on AA just fills the screen with white brightness obscuring everything and flooring framerates, and also that most of the graphical settings don't seem to function re : N/A.
Edit - i haven't used an Ati card since around the time CoV was released on the EU servers and just recently changed to an HD 4850, so perhaps it's down to that and not just W7?
[ QUOTE ]
So what happens exactly when release comes out? We spend a couple hundred (for a CD Key) or do we get to keep their CDs and require an update upon release? Also, according to Sun they send CDs... so does this mean I can get a 64-bit version?
[/ QUOTE ]
I know the other replies told you that you'd have to buy W7 on release, but... if you actually beta test it instead of just 'using' it like most will and submit plenty of feedback then don't be surprised if you get a free copy of it when it goes retail from MS. They did that with the Vista beta.

You're using the ati beta drivers that come with w7 aren't you? OpenGL isn't supported yet. What you need to do (or at least what worked for me) is uninstall them (a little tricky) and then install the November drivers (8.11). The december drivers cause insane strobing. You can find the 8.11's on the previous drivers page after you select your OS and card at the ati support site, yes they are VISTA drivers, but they work great in 7.
When you install the november drivers you will need to make sure that "triple buffering" and "force 24 bit" (or whatever the second selection is called) are checked in "all settings" in the catalyst control center.
Okay,
So I dual Booted win7 last night, and had no issues at all. Game loaded beutifully (after I updated my nvidia drives of course). This thing runs fast. I have never used a 64 bit OS before, so can anyone tell me: with the 64 bit OS is there always a 32 and 64 bit browser? I was a little bummed that there was, at least it appeared that way, flash support for the 64 bit IE..
edit: also, I am running it on an E6600 with 2GB of ram and an 8800 gts 640mb...
no noticeable lag at all...
Windows 7 has my money (as long as it only improves) when it goes to shelves.
I did notice something though... the .iso was named as ultimate...does that mean they are messing with us (stupid microsoft advertising campaign to get people to like vista) or are there going to be flavors like vista has?

Last I read, they had pared it down to 3 editions only. Premium, Business, and Ultimate. No more Basic or Enterprise. That may not be valid now though. They were supposed to have announced the SKUs at CES, but I haven't had time to go check it.

[/ QUOTE ]They will have to have an enterprise version because it uses a totally different activation scheme than the other editions. As for as Basic goes they should never have made that in the first place as that is what got them in trouble to begin with.

Thank you all for the information. I will now have no qualms about installing the 64-bit version of Windows 7 on my new PC when the parts arrive, just in time for 2xp weekend
Small update. When I dual-box, I occasionally get very bad texture issues that are not solved without completely closing both copies of the game.
This is a shame as I have not been able to dual-box since switching to Vista. When it works, I hardly notice any drop in FPS - just like back on XP.
Just as a side note...
Some will find that nVidia's 185.20 drivers work better than the WDDM 1.1 drivers offered through Windows Update and vice versa. Use whichever works best for you.
Personally, the WDDM 1.1 drivers cause severe artifacts and cause my GPU temps to rise very rapidly. The 185.20 64-bit drivers on the other hand are near perfect on my machine. I'm using an nVidia 8600GT card.
Your mileage will vary of course. Aside from all of that, I'm running Windows 7 Build 7000 64-bit with little to no issues and I'm absolutely loving it.
We'll see....

I've noticed a couple of rare and infrequent texture issues when alt-tabbing, but i don't dual box so i wouldn't be able to comment on that. I did notice, however, that the texture issues from alt-tabbing can be corrected by using the /unloadgfx command in game. I take it you've had no luck with that command?

Odd. Maybe it's the ATI drivers? o.O

The ati win7 beta drivers don't support opengl yet, or maybe it's just the 64 beta drivers that don't, hopefully they'll come up with a functional update soon.
