Discussion: Issue 13 New Missions
Wow, I'm in first? Cool.
Gotta say, I love the look of using Daedelus as a contact. Too bad heroes and villains won't be able to work together on these new arcs.
Still, I can't wait to try both sides of this new story!
Interesting. Sounds like there's not going to be a whole lot of new missions, but they sound fun regardless. If nothing else, I'm glad to see hero and villain missions are being written separate this time around. Should ensure we get a more antagonist arc villain-side.
From those pictures? Malta in Cimerora! Mwahahaha.
Anyways, awesome missions to look forward to. And sadly this is the first time I've seen the Sybil robes. But they look awesome.
Well, they may not be co-op arcs, but on the bright side, that means that two of them are examples of that mythical species known as 'villain-only content'. I don't really much care which way the do it, as I can see arguments for both (and I play both sides anyway) - on the one hand, co-op opens up more total content for any given character, hero or villain, but on the other hand faction-locked means that each arc can be more tightly written to correspond with the usually differing outlooks of the two factions. But doing it this way is at least a bone to those who want more villain exclusives.

Do I read things correctly? Is.. this..... exclusive Villain Content? Not just more.. Co-op?

From the Ten Ton Hammer interview:
"Like writing a novel, mission arcs in CoX constantly evolve and spawn even more arcs."
What??? Since when? Please name one mission arc that's ever changed, ever. The above quote from the Ten Ton Hammer page is quite simply an untrue statement. The mission arcs in CoH/V have never evolved.
BTW, you're still calling Issue 13: Power and Responsibility? I ask because it's a new week and I was wondering if it wasn't time to rename Issue 13 yet again.

Issue 13 has had one rename. Peregrine, get off your horse already. If you don't like the game, quit.

Peregrine_Falcon,
I consider that the article is written Bruce Harlick's perspective and from the flow of mission writing that goes from Issue 12 to Issue 13 - which is what Bruce has been involved with.
While the statement may not be characteristic of the entirety of CoH/CoV development, it's accurate from the perspective of a mission developer who recently joined the team: Bruce.

That's how I read it. Refreshing, no?
Of course it kinda doe to a mistake...
Looks like 2 3-part arcs for each side? Hmmmm... I hope I'm wrong here, I was kinda hoping for more...
EDIT: Oh hey... look! FIRST!
It's too bad thr writers don't provide some fresh, new story - the contacts are based on current signature characters. It'd be nice to see them break away from this and make something new and different.
I really hope the missions are better than what we have. Most of our current missions are so repetitive it makes me puke I really hope for new tile sets, bosses that look like bosses and not just another mob member etc. I don't know how many times a mission has ended and I didn't even realize I was whooping on the boss...he/she looked just like the rest of the mob!

Hrm, I'd say he was speaking from the idea of behind the scenes. Write a mission. Spawns an idea for another. Write it up, another idea comes out of it. Have to go back and make a few changes for the new direction. Much like writing a novel or story.....

Indeed, this screams a verbal assault on the devs cause you do not like something in it. No matter what developers are selling this to the public and need to appease as many people as possible.
Aside from this about the interview, I am glad to see Bruce really got in there and fleshed out some really cool stuff for mishes. I wished he had a bit more resources for the vill side. Hopefully in i14 we can dwell more into this.
Eeeexcellent, Smithers....
Everything is going as planned...Bruce is writing follow-on storylines and content, including NON-Co-Op missions...
...All is proceeding as we have foreseen it...finally....

That's how I would interrupt it.
Anywho can't wait to run through the new missions, particullary in seeing what Bruce was able to do with the new branching dialog system.

While the new arcs sound very interesting, I am somewhat slightly disappointed that, from the way the article words it, we're looking at 2 arcs a side for cim content. Now, first off, this is just content in cim, and doesn't include what we will get from the midnight club arcs (assuming, as I do, that midnight club arcs =/= cim arcs). Secondly, this is not a cry for co-op the arcs. I am thrilled that each side is getting seperate content; it would seem to answer the call that arose out of i10 when villains felt they were being treated like heroes (please save the day). However, this results in each side getting 2 arcs to cover 35-50, which is not, obviously, the amount of arcs we got out of rwz (7? 8? ish).
While I could see two arcs 'being enough' if they were the size of Wide Red World, from the way the article words it, posi's arcs seem to be the small ones like CoV mini-arcs (3-4 missions). This, unfortunately, makes me think that the arcs'll take an hour and a half, then... "... ITF?" Again, this is just my take on cim's stuff, we don't know how many arcs we could get out of the midnight club, so hopefully that will balance things out.

Oh yeah, crisis of infinite earths, Age of Apocalypse etc etc.
Its a hero trope, just like the praetorians.

From reading it, its more of, Heroes can't get into sharkhead, type of contact.
Agreed AC. From what the text reads, villains might be helping Ghost Sibyl revert the "Curse" or some "political powerbase" crap.

I'm impressed with what I read; the missions actually sound like they're of higher quality than I was expecting. (That wasn't meant to be an insult, I had fairly high expectations to begin with.)
I just hope those aren't ALL the new missions going in to Issue 13. 2 new story arcs per faction, even with me taking the time to go through them and read all the dialog and descriptions, still won't take me more than a few hours.
I'm still hoping for some "surprise" missions. Nothing big like a new zone or anything, just a few more story arcs to leisurely enjoy.

Gaming website Ten Ton Hammer.com presents an exclusive first look at a Development Diary from City of Heroes Senior Game Designer Bruce Harlick, "Designing the New Missions in Issue 13: Power and Responsibility". In the article, readers get a behind-the-scenes look at how the new missions included in the coming free expansion, Issue 13, were designed. Here's an excerpt:
[ QUOTE ]
Since Daedalus is the Cimeroran version of Positron and the greatest craftsman of his age, I wanted his second arc to feature some sort of crafting or item creation. So the first act has the hero investigating a threat, the second act sends the hero to create a device to help protect Cimerora from the threat, and the final act lets the hero protect Cimerora while Daedalus employs the device to prevent the threat from reoccurring. In the second mission, the crafting mission, I delved deeper into our dialog tree system and had a lot of fun writing the Crey Energy Fabricator Mk I. Although it is only a machine, I could hear its voice and get a sense for its personality as I wrote its dialog. I think the sequence there works better than a get the salvage and go to an invention table type of crafting mission.
