Avoiding Poverty - 10 Million at Level 6
Does it work? Yes.
The results are the same thing that happened to gas prices last year however. Huge run ups in prices due to "speculators" buying low & selling high, and removing inventory from the market.
Right now my 38 Night Widow is running on SOs because even with 5 mill in the bank, I can't afford generic IOs anymore.

Interesting. I haven't seen what you describe at all.
"MCF" was built for the initial guide, and hasn't really played since this little experiment
was completed.
However, "FJI" is my current actively levelling villain (he's L44 now), so I've been running
him pretty consistently, and apart from inf gained through normal play and drops, this method
is really the only marketing strategy he's been using.
I can tell you that he has quadrupled his wealth since this guide was originally written.
I'll further add that I've been watching recipes pretty closely due to all the negative feedback
this guide received, so I'm actually curious/confused as to how, exactly, you're struggling with
this approach...
Recipe prices certainly do fluctuate as does everything on the market, but volumes have been
relatively stable throughout the entire period, and of the 234 possible niches, there are always
enough profitable ones to fill his transaction slots. As mentioned a few posts earlier, there has
not been a single occasion where he couldn't successfully do that.
Perhaps you can clarify what problems you're having.

Level 35-40 basic IO's should cost about 60-150k each per slot if you buy the recipe at the crafting stand.
If you wait for bargains and have a bit of patience 5 mill should easily equip you with 35-40 IO's. Especially if you hadn't wasted about 5 mill on Single origins from level 27, 32 and 37.

Unless I'm severely mistaken, anyone can craft a full set of level 35 IOs with a little patience and 5 million... the only price that fluctuates is the price of the salvage. I'm pretty lazy so I always buy my recipes from the table (until I've memorized them) and I still don't think I spend over 5 million to outfit a character at level 35.
At worst, you can partially or mostly outfit your character, then do the rest when you've earned a bit more money. In the meantime you're much better off and your IO enhancements are never going to turn red.
But as many others have already pointed out, it's impossible to deplete inventory on an item that has an endless supply at a fixed price, which generic IO recipes have.
Even more to the point, if a marketeer is able to buy low and sell high, it NEVER prevents you from buying low as well. You just need to set a price at which the product will eventually sell, and come back later -- just like the marketeer does.

Thank you for this strategy, I'm exactly the target player for this method.
I have a bunch of low-level alts who's costumes would really benefit from crafted wings, I just can't afford them.
Although, now it looks I will be able to in short order.
[/ QUOTE ]
Short order was right, using this method I got enough INF for a pair of Draconic wings, plus salvage in just under two hours.
Basically all I needed was a little more than 100K, so not a huge amount, but would've taken me much longer without this method.
I also was incredibly impatient, so I targeted recipes that had way more selling than being bid upon. I scooped those up for under vendor price pretty quickly. Usually, my 10-stack was fulfilled while I stood at the Black Market.

I'm IO'ing a level 27 at the moment. I've left all his market slots full of bids and will do the crafting tomorrow.
Starting cash before doing the IO'ing at level 30 is 28,603,838 inf.
I'll post tommorrow with updated costs about how much it costs to IO a toon in basic IO's on the current market, just to prove it costs less than 5 mill.
When i get my total cost I will post a few tricks about how to get IO's for not a lot.

Final cost of fully kitting a toon in level 30 IO's for me, done in 20-30 minutes (with 2 hours downtime waiting for some bids)
3,993,978 Full cost
2,262,564 net cost.
I saved over 1.7 million by taking two additional steps before replacing the IOs
1. Buy 10 level 40-50 SOs/IOs for cheap on the market. Don't pay more than 5-10k. Keep them in your inventory when you respec
2.) Use the respec from last issues and get rid of all your slotted enhancements with the buy back feature, this includes those level 50 SO/Ios
So simply put, 5 Mill is easily enough to equip a toon in basic IO's

WRONG!
I did use a respec when my widow completed her patron arc, so I got my 3 million (not 5) in SO money back.
I spent somewhere between EIGHT and TEN HOURS saturday night sitting in Cap waiting. After selling a few goodies along the way, I blew all 8 million & was still short the funds to slot level 40 IOs in 2 powers. I scrounged up another million selling stuff & SO'ed them
THe market is screwed right now. Set IO recipes that months ago were going for 50K to 100K are now over a million. Pangean Soil USED to be down to 500K ish. it's 5 freaking million on the black market now!
Gee, so if I spend 6 hours running 3 ITFs all day I MIGHT be able to afford 1 component of 1 recipe.
You use Pangean Soil in your common IOs? Wow, I want to know what type of IOs those are. Seriously, I buy from the table all of the time out of impatience. It's expensive, but not overly so. I swear that every time someone finds an easy, reliable way to make money, you've got people up in arms about "EXPLOITING THE COMMON PLAYER" and whatnot. Do you seriously think that they post their common IOs on the market for under 1k because of a lack of knowledge? Most of these inexperienced victims of yours are offloading their rare salvage and recipes they don't need to vendors, more likely than not.
I've tried this. It's better as a side-method to making money, but it works. Thanks for the guide, it's quite informative.

Common IO's are what i did in the experiment, not set IO's.
You said you couldn't afford generic IO's for your toon even though you had 5 mill in the bank
I proved you wrong, i got a toon kitted out in generics for 1.7 million.
Now your trying to say "you cant get full sets for 5 mill"
You could never, ever get full sets for a level 40 toon for 5 million. Not from day one.
I did it in 30 odd mins of game time, buying some recipes from the crafting station, along with 2 hours bidding while i watched a movie.
If your incapable of doing such a simple process, I can see why the market confuses you.
Funny thing is, I have run 5 task forces in total in 18 months, yet i have roughly 1,261,165,506 infamy in cash on my toons at the moment.
The problem is not that you don't run tasks forces 24/7, its not the market, the problem is you not understanding how it works.

As an update to earlier posts, I dragged my original L6 hero out of his retirement on the beach
and gave him the edict to earn another 10M inf during the past week (2/7/2009 - 2/14/2009).
Net Result: 10M+ in less than 3 game hours (> 3.6M/hr). Now he's back on the beach, sipping
Mai Tais, with nearly 25M in hand.
Clearly, the strategy still works well - If you're having a problem with it, re-read the guide, or
feel free to ask any specific questions relating to whatever difficulties you're having, and I'll
try to answer them for you...

This is a great strategy and works well in getting my new alts a nice little nest-egg early on. I've been stopping once they get about 1 million, as that's usually enough to buy all the TOs and DOs that they'll need in the early levels.
Thanks for outlining this for us. The method for determining how much each Invention recipe will be worth upon resale was the part that I had been missing.
Good guide!

Someone had blabbed a strategy somewhat like this on Freedumb a few nights ago. I had been buying recipes that were going for a pittance and selling them for quite a while. But only a few here and there. Buy a lvl 30 for 500 or so, turn around and resell to the shop for 3k-8k.
After that night however, well let's just say that isn't going to work anymore.
[/ QUOTE ]
Then why does it still work? Wentworth's crosses all servers. The market is from every hero server in the game. So, if I can still do it on Victory, then I can also do it on Freedumb.
Also, this strategy does NOT endanger the presence of Common IO recipes on WW's even remotely.
Re-read what it says to do. You buy for LESS than the vendor will give you. And you buy low enough for the profit to be worth the time invested.
So IO recipes that are close to or higher than the vendor prices (i.e. people who want to make more than what the vendor will give them, or provide recipes for people willing to pay what the vendor would pay) would still be on the market. Meanwhile, people too lazy to find a vendor will just dump them on WW's with a dinky price tag, just to get rid of them. THOSE are the ones this strategy says to buy up.
Also, I'll say the same thing I say to people who complain about flippers, just pay more than the marketeers are paying, and you'll get the buying preference.
There are three strategies to marketeering:
1) Be cheap and impatient, and not get anything
2) Use the 0 key as a "Buy it now" button
3) Be patient and smart, make inf on the system and come out ahead.
You can do 1 and 2, I'll stick with 3.

You like to use this capitalized declaration in your posts on things market related. Most people who read it probably assume it's an accusation against whoever you are talking to.
However, I've come to realize it's something else entirely. It's a clear label on your posts, identifying and categorizing their content.

[/ QUOTE ]
First of all, I commend the writer of this guide for sharing his system for making inf. I am a little more selfish about my specific money making strategies. However, I will say that I have come into a little bit of a new strategy myself. Before this weekend I would only list IO recipes if I thought they were worth listing (would sell for more than 500K). On a whim I decided to start looking at the crafted IO price for all my drops and then look at the required salvage. I was surprised to find that one particular IO recipe was selling for around 5K, but the crafted IO had sold for around 2 mil. So I looked at the required salvage and found that the highest priced was only 200K. I said to myself, "Self, you'd be pretty silly to not craft the IO and see if it will sell." I listed it for 1.5 mil last night and found a nice 1.8 mil waiting for me this morning. Sure 1.8 isn't a whole lot when you want to buy a Numina unique, but every little bit helps.
Now, the reason that I clicked reply in the first place in reference to the quote above, I just wanted to chip in that often I will list things on the market dirt cheap because I happen to really enjoy getting those WW badges for X number of items sold. I just want to move them as quickly as possible. I am not unwary. and I know I'm more than likely contributing to some other "ebil marketeer's" profit, but I am more than fine with that as I trust that I just as well may be the one profiting as the one contributing. That is the great part of a free market! Equal opportunity, baby!
Well hi, new here at the forum and to the game.
Im actually still using the trial version, second day, and i stumbled here.
So my question is, you said to buy stacks of 10. Do they automatically stack up if you buy ten? because i couldnt afford 10 of whatever i bought earlier, and since i could only carry 1 recipe, i had to make 6 trips...
i can buy 10 now, since i made a profit, but i didn't see any buttom to get a stack of 10.
Hello Marotte and welcome to City of Heroes. There isn't a button you can press, but there should be a slider to drag when you select the item you want to bid on. You can select anywhere from 1-10 items at a time for one slot. The only thing that doesn't apply is enhancements. You can bid on more than one, but you can't place more than one in a WW/BM slot. If you still can't find it, you might ask somebody in-game for help. I know you can't send tells, but you can use the help channel if broadcast doesn't yield some assistance.
This is an excellent guide. I've used a similar guide, perhaps peterpeter's to similar effect.
Look people, some people like Smurphy and 4 and others have that Market knowhow but we can ALL make money. That's the great thing about the Market, game additions and removals influence the tides and sometimes you can crest them to profit!
Just be observant, be patient and have fun.
