Consider this, if my main toon is my fav toon i would like to play him so earning any one of these badges is going to take a long long long time.

Assuming you do things like work, eat and sleep, you are probably spending upwards of 12 hours a day not playing CoH. At least, hopefully. I'm probably averaging around four hours a day in game, not nearly all on the same character, and I work out of the house with a lot of down time.

Exactly how many hours a day do you expect to play your "fav toon"?

The point I'm trying to make is that it would take well over a year to complete the badges...

The other point is that while they wanted to make it non-trivial to earn the bonuses, I think they went too far in the opposite direction (as usual).

The whole system would seem to lose it's meaning pretty fast if it would take a relatively short amount of time to complete every job.

Ok even if you do only play your main for say 4 hours every day do you know how much longer it would take to get all the badges?

You would lose 120 hours every month towards your badge.

lets say i play 7 hours a week 28 hours a month now it will take 720 hours to earn this badge that means if i play my toon. that means every time i play this toon for about an hour on average a week its going to add an extra day till i get this badge.

Considering i do have a life and when i play a game i might want to EARN some rewards and not just be encouraged not playing my fav toons.

but of course your just going to say this is a great idea, but no matter how much you try and change my mind, these values are TOO HIGH 60 days to earn an accolade and i use the term EARN loosely

why does everyone (mostly) want to just blow thru content? It seems ost want everythign right now.. I think the system is great the way its explained... They only problem i see is for people ( the few ) that only play one toon. If i am hooked on playing a toon all my other toons will be earning rested XP, bonuses and other rewards. Its a great idea and system.

I like it, I hope it stays as is...

THIS IS NOT CONTENT!

I do not have to do anything for it other than make sure my character is logged out in the right place.

I don't want to blow through content. In fact I want more content but instead I get this.

A lot more than that. It will now take you 1 year and 2 months to get all the badges.

How is staying logged off a character "content"?

We are getting a mission architect, new stuff in Cimerora, and whatever else is thrown in. We are getting plenty of content. Don't punish badgers for wanting to complete their collections. 30 days is too long.

From a different point of view, this is added purely as added flavor for a character. It's not added purely as badge material for those who must have them all, and now. Taking a month to earn a free benefit we've never had access to before doesn't seem outrageous.

I don't believe it's intended that SupaDude, who's secret identity is James Boring, would be a city official and a police officer, as well as someone who owns a business, works in a bank, parties frequently, tends the sick in a hospital, designs clothing, and teaches college classes. And, in his spare time, become the chief of police, head of security at a company, a doctor, a practicing scientist, and, oh, by the way, an alchemist.

Then why have badges or accolades? If it's a pure RP thing why get anything from it at all?

Why didn't you cap it at a max 8 hours of off-line time per 24 hours or real time? This would allow people to play their characters, yet get the awards at the same time as everyone else.

<snip>

Why not cap being on patrol at another 8 hours per diem? This combined with the day jobs capped lets players play a total of 8 hours without interfering with the reward.

[/ QUOTE ]

The system essentially
a) encourages people to play alts
b) give more "casual" players (players who don't spend as much time in-game) a bit of an edge compared to more dedicated players. (edit: given that they divide their time among a similar number of characters, and that number is not sufficiently high to allow the player with more in-game time to play in a permanently "buffed" state)

Your proposed limits would essentially nullify both of those things, which if any of those things were intended (which seems very possible given how the system is designed) would be contrary to the design of the system.

Simply put, it doesn't seem like the system is intended to give every character the awards at the same rate regardless of how much they are played.

[ QUOTE ]
Why the fudge 30 days? Given that an in game day is 30 minutes, that means if you have to spend 720 hours off-line your character has "worked" 1,440 hours to get a single badge. I'm a fan of "nice round numbers", but yikes.

[/ QUOTE ]

I don't see how that's relevant. 30 days was likely chosen because it was deemed to be an appropriate real-time "investment"
for the rewards in question (or at least a good starting point). It can be debated if 30 days really is appropriate, but I strongly doubt that the number of "in-game days" was ever considered, nor do I feel that it should be.

Double XP does a level 50 how much good?

[/ QUOTE ]

If it doesn't do any good, would that be a problem?

A lot more than that. It will now take you 1 year and 2 months to get all the badges.

...on the same character.

Which brings us back to: consider the possibility that you actually aren't supposed to have every badge in the game on one character.

If I'd designed the system you'd only be able to get one accolade out of it, period. (You could "quit" and start on a new one, but you'd only ever have one at a time.)

adding more EPIC badges that take HOURS of farming is STUPID, you will be farming to earn these badges in a way, just no actually on your toon.

I have a main named hatter he is my badge toon i like to do all the new story archs in the game im slowly going through and finishing every single one and i plan to do all the new ones with him. But the more i play this guy the more im penalized against these badges if i want to earn even 1 of these accolades

Well if your ok with that then fine but some of us like to get as many badges as we can. I don't see the problem with it either because they do nothing for you (well most of them don't).

Given that the rewards seem supplemental more than anything, I think the system seems reasonable.

Of course, I'm not much of a badge hoarder either, though.

I elected to give you the benefit of the doubt that they are relatively trivial errors, not realizing that was highly unsound judgement as you are the sort of person that points out "a year" is incorrect when the more technically correct phrase that would have been more accurate is "some indeterminant amount of time close to, but exceeding one year."

That seems obvious if you start thinking like you are roleplaying and not accumulating "score" in some game you made up for yourself. Having badges for specific jobs allows a specific reward for playing your character consistently: If you play a doctor, and consistently log out in the hospital, you will soon start to get more rewards from logging out in the hospital than would a roll-player who goes there because they currently want that reward.

It's about time an MMO company started making mechanics that rewarded people for role-playing. Too many things that coudl be done along those lines are too exploitable. (For example, a real superhero does not say to the old lady who is being mugged, "I'm sorry ma'am. I don't get any exp for helping you so you can just suffer." But if there were any reward at all for defeating gray enemies, some rollplayer would exploit it so there isn't.)

I like this idea on many levels, but most especially because it's a tangible incentive to roleplay characters at least a tiny bit.
