Discussion - Dev Diary: Designing Day Jobs Feature

In the newest Dev Diary, Game Designer Phil Zeleski explains the new Day Jobs system that will be introduced in Issue 13: Power and Responsibility.

Day Jobs takes the concept of offline character progression to a new level, incorporating a variety of potential rewards and allowing players to add further depth to their character's identity and back-story. Is your Hero a Banker when not out stopping crime, or maybe a simple Shop Keeper? Is your Villain an avid Clubber, or perhaps a Smuggler? Whatever you choose, Badges and Accolades await in addition to other bonuses!

30 days for a badge logged out, that seems a wee big excessive. 60 days to get an accolade and 1 year logged out at LEAST to earn all the badges.

Congrats on killing badging for me. I am still working on the pillbox badges now i have to log out to earn those for a year, how is my badge toon supposed to get played?

Shorten the time needed to earn the badge at least make it like 5 days of logged out that way i can actually earn some of this stuff the costume options with them for the toons I PLAY

It's the worst idea, EVER.

No offense to the devs. The game is otherwise pretty much great, and I've seen the level of work you guys are capable of and am generally impressed.

But this, giving away free stuff for not playing? It's just... wrong.

Main Hero: Chad Gulzow-Man (Victory) 50, 1396 Badges
Main Villain: Evil Gulzow-Man (Victory) 50, 1193 Badges
Mission Architect arcs: Doctor Brainstorm's An Experiment Gone Awry, Arc ID 2093

Way too much time spent not playing the game.

Why should we pay you to not play our main characters or our badge characters?

5 days is much too short IMHO. I think there is already enough low-hanging fruit badge-wise to sate most players. I'm kind of happy to have something that requires a little more patience to obtain, and can't easily be trivialized by farming.

In other news, how can I become the Good Humor Man?

Yeah.... the time for the badges needs to get MUCH shorter..... and I'm kinda meh on the dbl xp upon inactivity...... though since I play very little on average I won't complain.

Speaking for myself, I started badging when they came out. But I focus on the "working" badges, i.e. defeat this number of enemies, kill this monsters, etc.

I went through a major altitis phase, getting up to filling my entire server slots WAY BEFORE they expanded them.

This gives me the opportunity to work on characters, and switch back to my older characters if someone asked for a specific archetype.

If you are a member of the Badge-Hunter forums, my latest post about i13 states that this will make being "Badge Leader" on each server and overall more competitive.

I'm looking forward to "Day Jobs", because after all, this is an RPG.

In addition to all of the Day Jobs, every character is "On Patrol" after they log out of the game. When players log back into Paragon City or the Rogue Isles they will gain 1 bar of double experience (when defeating enemies) for every 24 hours they are logged out. A player can earn up to 10 bars of double experience this way. Double experience is shown as a blue portion of your experience bar. One thing to note is that if a player has any experience debt, the debt will be removed first before any double experience is applied.

[/ QUOTE ]

So if one of my characters is logged out for 24 hours, when I log back in with them, it takes me half as long to fill a bubble assuming I don't have any debt. Groovy. And not quite "rested XP" either, seeing as we still have to go out and earn that double XP through playing.

I see no problem with this whatsoever.

30 days to earn a badge from not playing the game? to earn a badge and costume is not hard, its not challenging but annoying, if i want that nifty suit for a new toon i have to log out of him for 30 days before i can get said costume, its not like i have to earn it or do a mission or actually do something.

Looks interesting. Can't wait to see what some of my old forgotten characters will get when/if I ever log them back on.

I love badges, but to me this is dissapointing to me. 30 days is just a tad bit long to earn a single badge. it was bad enough with the other epic badges. Wereally don't need to go down that road again.

2 Weeks to me seems more or less a better time than 30 days per badge. Which would equal 1 accolade per month.

I believe this is meant for more casual gamers, and not those who can crunch out 50 levels in less than 50 days.

I, for one, think this is a pretty cool idea. I want to see more of the new costume options though.

Well, likely not anything at first. Something tells me this won't be retroactive.

I can see where this may be an issue for badge-addicts, but me personally I have a lot of characters that are well over a month old. When your an alt-a-holic like me, there are lot's of characters you love because you created them, but there just isn't enough time to play them that often.

Are the new costumes even related to the day job badges? For example, I can already choose a doctor theme from the get-go. I don't remember seeing the red name post that states this.

i remember seeing some where that the day job badges were linked to costumes

Linky?

I'm cautiously optimistic.
The most obvious pitfalls I could imagine for a system like this seem to have been avoided (though it's hard to tell for sure without all the details), and it seems amusing enough.

I'm curious, how does the double-XP work with the Leveling Pacts?
I'm assuming that the XP will be split, but will you gain double-XP for a certain number of points, or until you reach a certain amount of XP (in which case you'd effectively get double-XP for a longer period of time if you're in a Leveling Pact)?

Day job badges are NOT linked to costumes.

The day job related costumes are free, unlocked at the start, content in Issue 13.

And the 30 days is what we are initially going with. The values may change in beta.

Thanks Posi!

Edit: here's the post in question. BAB mentions Jay working on "day job related costume sets". I think some implied that the costumes were tied to Day Job badges, when in fact the costumes are only being made because of day jobs. Just a misinterpretation.

I didn't think about that. However, once this is live it would make sense that it would start counting the time from that point forward, yes?

I have so blasted many alts spread across every sever, there is no way I play them ALL in a day.

Or a week.

Or a month.

Or some even in a year.

Or more.

... I really AM an altaholic.

AND PROUD OF IT!!!

That is actually a pretty cool feature. One thing I'm wondering, how ever, is if the temp accolade powers are useable in the arena as well as PVE/PVP Zones.

Other wise can't wait.

thank you for the response

but i still think 30 days per badge is ALOT of time logged off to earn something

I don't understand the negativity. I think this is great! I mean, our characters are going to be logged out most of the time anyway so this is a nice little bonus that pops up when we log in every month and a half or so. To my, the system looks fine the way it is.
