Hey guys,

With #50 of the City Scoop coming up, I'm looking to document Arena history from Issue 4 to now.

Specially looking for:

-Colorful quotes and anecdotes from vets
-Team line-ups and their evolution
-Links to scores from matches back then
-Memorable matches/drama
-Teams from back in the day (seem to remember Tribute, Lion's Den, JAL, HVND, etc)
-How organized it was:

TL DR

Vets: lf some info on how it was back in the day, screenies to some scores, info on old teams, quotes, anything will help.

Questions about the game, either side? /t @Neuronia or @Neuronium, with your queries!
168760: A Death in the Gish. 3 missions, 1-14. Easy to solo.
Infinity Villains
Champion, Pinnacle, Virtue Heroes

so mad

"His Imperial Majesty's Minister of Restraints and Leather" -LHF

Two naughty acronym teams / Ascension / Convenient / Artic and the Chillz / Fap / Other teams I can't remember (sorry.. mind is goin')

That's an immense amount of information.

Perhaps getting a few of the old guys on Vent and doing some interviews/storytime? Might be easier to piece together the stories a bit better that way, unless youre looking to gloss over stuff and just provide some basic history.

If you just want anecdotes, I'll start:

Issue 4 on Test = dead bodies fighting.

Right before i12 beta started...

We had arena's first ever official double header
[censored] vs BL
PE vs BL

I believe tribute went out undefeated, and HVND was their last match, and though we put up a fight, we couldn't beat 'em

Posted

Also, I believe HVND left after our victory over FoL

Ahhh the good ol' days before movement suppression and ED...

And before Impale got neutered...lettin' that impale fly from half way across the map and being able to land ripper on the target before the impale got there...ahh...good times.

hahahha. IH as a toggle too and double stacked Dull Pain with perma MoG. It was soo unfair but it was FUN!

tanks were viable as taunt bots....stacking vengence was the norm....ice/em blasters were king dmg dealers...

I recall Tribute getting beat by a Hell Raiser team, but the HR team had a couple of fillers (which wouldn't fly in today's nazi-ladder system). By today's standards, it would have probably been a (serious) "practice" match.

The best arena quote comes from Ajax. I wasn't there to hear it, but it is still funny everytime i hear someone quote him saying:

"Who the $*&@ uses TP foe in the arena!?"

phasing actually took skill then.

Posted

"We're the best SG eva!!! We quit. Here's the exploit we used to win our matches."

Posted

No limit to Phase duration. People phasing for a whole match if they knew they couldn't win...or getting a single kill and then phasing for the remainder of the match.

How about the times when Tanks and Scrappers were the kings of the Arena.
The introduction of Toggle Droppers on Blasters and the massive rebalancing of pvp that occured afterwards.

The first few attempts at Test Leagues complete with Drafts.

The first SGs that met on test to battle.

Tribute, HVND, Sitting Ducks, Freaks of Legend, etc...

The Server vs. Server Battles (Lag-Fest).

Lots of good stories about the "Good Ole' Days".

theres alot of JAL scores on the JAL guildportal site, starting in 06 through to 08.

Penance

(The short-lived) VR-Corrupted did a villains double-header awhile ago.

Ajax is probably one of the most knowledgeable people on the history of different SG's. Be sure to check with him.

Thanks for the feedback all, I'll check with Ajax and a few others.

This last time? HVND's last last last arena match was a loss to Lions Den. Third match was damn close but they pulled it out at the end. Few memorable moments:

Penance vs HVND- Where the original "HVND Turtle" was invented. Bubbles, storms and a lot of love. Penance lost this match, and then went on to lose to FoL I believe, and then quit the game.

HVND vs LD- HVND and LDs last match. These were the "top 2" teams at that time. Clash of the titans ending with the retirement of both SGs. The second appearance of the HVND "Ace" team, this time using a Run and Gun team, rather than the old loldefense team. It still lost though. First was to FoL.

JAL vs FoL- Flying Turtle. It was a good amount of lulz. Group Fly + TP around and GG. It lost and still got a huge amount of grief.

VR vs Velocity- Evade team. Essentially accomplishing the same thing as the flying turtle, Velocity scored and ran the whole match. The forum lulz were epic as well because flying turtle supporters turned to haters. After the win, Velocity left the game.

That was fun to watch. Don't forget the GG at the begining of the one match by a JaL blaster after he got the first kill and assumed it was over (forget his name), the match ended up in a tie. Also the epic lulz at a certain fat persons expense from FoL on VR vent. Priceless.
