The Defender's Manifesto
To be applauded by the great Jock Tamson! My thanks indeed. This may make me break out the old Microsoft Word to bust out the origin story for scrapper primaries I've been thinking of.

Translation: I'm a Meat Shield.
I'm a meat shield with an decent wardrobe and acting credentials
But I will say that I enjoy playing my defender more than my blaster or tank and only slightly less than I enjoy my scrapper. It's a vastly different play style that's quite refreshing to settle in to.
Nice heals!
That was awesome. Everything you said was right, and, even though I've never played a Defender, but, you guys get way too much crap for being unique. Keep on doing what you do!
Defending is cool.
Yeah... I like healing people. With those... green icon things.... that you click.
See, when you click those green plus sign circles while you have a teammate targeted, their lifebar goes up if was a little down before.
Or maybe even a lot down.
Yeah.
edit: Oh yeah, I forgot to mention!
If your teammates' red lifebar bars get completely empty... they.. well.. die, so it's good to keep them from getting empty in the first place.
And that's why you click on the green + sign circle thingies while targeting them.
...so they don't die.
Just some food for thought.
Arc Salvo: Okay hold one sec guys, we can't just rush in blindly vs these Nemesis, they've got these ranged aoe's tha-
Teammate1(charging in): Shut up, Arc Salvo, you lame*$% Viewtiful Joe wannabe! What do you know?!
Teammate2(also charging): yeah, ST#& arc salvo u PWR RANGR U!
Arc Salvo: *sigh*
Go. Hunt. Heal people who are killing Skuls.

Ah, yes, but when I put them in a hamster ball, it doesn't really go down much in the first place! Unless they have a death wish. In which case, well, not my problem. ;3
In essence, all AT's are defenders. Note the lack of a capital 'D'.
Blasters defend their team by destroying the opposition.
Scrappers defend the team by obliterationg those whom they find instigators.
Controllers defend the team by preventing the enemy from assaulting It.
Defenders defend the team through their buffs and protections.
Tankers defend the team by ensuring that no one else needs to take damage.
I am a Tanker.
My role is to protect my team, and put my own life on the line to do so.
I ensure that no one else needs be harmed.
I am a Tanker.
First one in, first one out.
Sister Controller locks my foe in place.
brother Blaster destroys my enemy in safety.
Sister Defender shields us, and protects us from harm.
Brother Scrapper eliminates my greatest threat.
I am a Tanker.
Yes, I play more tankers than defenders.
But in a way... we're all defenders.

Nicely said, I really like this, thank you.

This thread is full of win. I came here, demoralized by rejection and feelings of inadequacy for not being a pure healer. I return now to the fray, my confidence renewed (until the next time I get dissed for not being a real healer, of course).

Just succinctly tell them "lurn2play" and then proceed to tell them that, mathematically, buffs provide greater mitigation and survival than healing. Healing is only important in the first 12 levels or so before characters start managing to get a full suite of powers to make themselves effective. After that, buffs and debuffs are king.

this is what I feel like with my Stormie...
Morale-boosting quote of the week: "You're pretty good. We usually die a lot."
My amusing moment for the week:
My level 2 emp/sonic named Mama (she kisses your booboos better, then yells at the naughty bullies) got onto a sewer team. A tank, a scrapper, a blaster, a warshade and a something/thermal. At those levels, all I had was, of course, heal aura and heal other and 1 blast. We are cruising through the sewers, and I SWEAR the tank had a death wish, but there I was healing, and blasting, and healing and blasting. No one died, except the WS when he ran too far from the group. Finally, as we were getting ready to ghetto port to the surface, the scrap says to me "Nice heals" and I replied "Nah - nice defending". He replies "???" and so I said "when you have a defender on your team and they are making your life MUCH better, thank them for their defending, no matter if they are throwing debuffs, buffs or the ever-obvious heals. They will ALL appreciate it more.". He replied "oh. OK. Nice defending" followed by LOLs from the team.
Then the 48+month vet WS (had the fairy pet) sends me a tell "You read the defender forums, don't you...". I just had to laugh
love the manifesto...laughs...I have a huge empath/sonic defender...done up to look like a barbarian and I named him Heelor...Heelor the barbarian...OOkla ariela we ride!

Priceless!
One of my all-time favorites: I'd just received a /tell asking if I would be interested in teaming, and that they were struggling with a Hallows Troll Cave mission. This was at least three years ago, when Dark/Dark Defenders were not well understood and not considered desirable by the majority of the player base. Because of that, I felt it right to inform him I was a D3. His response was to flip me an invite. I smiled and accepted.
The first thing I hear in Team chat after joining? "Okay, this will be cake now. I got us a Dark Defender." Still makes me smile after all that time!
Oh, and yeah...we beat 'em like a rented mule!

That takes me back, my SG mates said roughly the same thing after I had teamed with them a couple of times.
This thread gets a nine out of ten for kicking booty.
Nice job OP.
My lvl 50 Defenders thank you.
I am a Defender... I am the one you invite as an afterthought when the team gets to 7 strong and suddenly a small "dim" bulb goes on above your head... "oh gee half the team are Sk's and we'll be facing a ton of Purple bosses on Invincible. Maybe we needs us a H3al0r!"
I have attacks.. But half the time I don't have time to use them because I am so busy clicking my Aura followed by my Heal other to try and keep the team alive
I shake my head and roll my eyes at comments like "I never carry and respites or awakes" I see so I'm supposed to scrabble around the map, because instead of staying where I can easily reach all of you with my heals ... you've broken into 2 or 3 small groups and managed to aggro 4 mobs. And if you die its "my" fault for not healing fast enough. Of course it is WHY would you even think that maybe you could make my job a bit easier by popping a green so I can babysit the 5 level SG mate your powerleveling on our 50+ AV mission.
Empathy sucks? No empathy is the purist healing powerset in the game and, OH MY GOD!, the only one that with a few exceptions actually allows me to benefit from the same powers I am using to HEAL you. I let the screams for CM roll off my back like falling rain... "Ummm excuse me but at the moment I am being held here too. And since I am the ONLY one on the entire team that has CM it's just a bit hard for me to wake you up when I'm sound asleep.
I take pride in what I do ... If anyone on a team I have joined, aside from me , dies I feel like I have failed in some way. But so many seem determined to die. I keep the team list up so I can watch for team mates in peril. One drops into the danger zone and I try to activate Heal Other only to find he's wandered off solo to another part of the map altogether and is now taking on a mob designed to challenge an 8 man team alone. I LET HIM DIE. I have 6 other souls to tend and have no desire to join him in death.
I sacrifice my HP and my pride to rez the Blapper or Scrapper the team needs to defeat an EB and wind up staring at the carpet for my efforts. But I'm not giving the team near enough DPS so I am NOT pulling my weight.
I watch in disbelief as time and again team mates use up an awake, when they actually carry them, as I am heading toward them to rez and restore them to full END/HP. I wonder does anyone aside from ME ever bother to check out their team mates profile to see what powers anyone has?
I AM A DEFENDER .. and yes I'm just a llittle bit crazy!

I linked him this post so that he could see that his legacy is still alive and kicking. He tried to post here but his account is no longer active for the forums apparently.
