The forums are acting kind of goofy right now. He might want to try again tomorrow after about noon.

Pimpsmack me some noob hoes who don't like shields, but instead want heals >_>

And yes, that sounded very white.

It seems as though I am in solitude, reading an ancient tome written by all of the prideful Defenders before me. While a little interaction with other Unofficial Students of the Great Ones would be good, I will continue to keep these brilliant etchings alive alone if I must...

I take pride in what I do ... If anyone on a team I have joined, aside from me , dies I feel like I have failed in some way...

[/ QUOTE ]

Yes! This! I've felt this many many times in CoH and several other games as well. I've cured this self punishment with a Rad defender, and a subsequent "theoretical" calculation if you will:

My anchor is at point A... my dead ally is at point B.
Therefore: The ally killed himself/herself by straying outside of my range.

My anchor has not been debuffed yet... my dead ally is at point B.
Therefore: The ally was impatient or cocky, and died as a result.

My anchor is at point A... my dead ally is at point A
Therefore: I wouldn't know what to conclude, because it has yet to happen this way.

[ QUOTE ]
I AM A DEFENDER .. and yes I'm just a llittle bit crazy!

[/ QUOTE ]

I know of no other way that it should be.

If nothing could persuade me more to try out a Defender.

I'll admit, I come from a WoW background, though to be fair I was of the healing variety when it came to leveling and group play.

I really like the idea of going back to that role, since it's something that I've found I tend to gravitate to. Honestly, the only thing I worry about is soloing, since I'm pretty sure I won't always be able to find a group.

Of course, the other difficulty lies in which powersets to choose.

In any case, I sympathize. Coming from a healing background I feel that I at least partially know how you feel when you have to deal with people who accuse you of not doing their job when, in reality, they're not doing theirs.

Survival is a two-party effort. If someone puts themselves into a situation in which you can't keep them up, it's hardly your fault in the matter.

Rest assured Cool Catt, there is nothing that a defender cannot do... nothing.

Defenders can solo but in comparsion to other ATs it mostly will feel slower, sometimes alot slower sometimes a little slower.

Though once you find the 'fender build that suits you, you won't even notice how quick or how slow it is. Every minute will be great...

Oh the sweet feeling of sickening my opponents with radiation and then cascading the lethal pulses of damage from my vocal cords upon them all, each pulse strenghthening the next. Never, ever, ever gets old!

Can't say I agree with you there.

Fair enough.

Enjoy your toon Cool Catt. You've made the right choice.

After soloing a Druid to level 50 without the use of any offense other than staff and mace whacks in WoW (before all the current leveling ease), I think I can handle that. ^^

Kinetics/Psychic. O.o Well, it's the pair that worked best for my character concept. This should be interesting. Try as I might, I couldn't make Dark work, in any way. But oh well, I'll save that for another day.

Ah... the old druid days are coming back to me... Loved that big guy . Got him up to 75 I think.

Oh man! Ya didn't like Dark?

Oh well, I guess making your opponents wet themselves at the very sight of you isn't for everyone...

nice job...

No one goes there anymore, it's too crowded...

I started a ice/dark Defender last week and I *thought* it was going to be weak and squishy, less damage than Blaster to boot.

Boy was I surprised, Defenders are fun to play! I was able to handle soloing easier than any blaster I've played. After the critters are loaded up with debufs, i sing "Can't touch this" and waste them all.

I endorse this message. In fact, I think that it is awesome.

I have a tried a few ATs since coming back and none have scratched my itch like my Kin/Sonic defender. It's active, effective and just a ton of fun to play. I enjoy that it takes some strategy to make it work, although I can be a pseudo blaster if I want to for a time and just mash keys

Since it seems very appropriate (and since Phil linked me over here), I'm going to cross-post this from the thread I started on trying to get my faith in defenders renewed:

Hey Phil, remind me to not start any threads any more. They tend to turn into massive debates that have little or nothing to do with the reason I posted in the first place.

To everyone who has been talking about damage and blasting people in the face... Come on! That's no reason to play a defender!

To everyone who has been talking about containment and soloing... Come on! That's no reason to NOT play a defender!

To Phil, and so far Phil alone, yes, the reason to play a defender is to make teams work together. Gone are the days when teams just naturally assume you have to have a defender for that. Here now are the days when you have Make Your Own Team in order to do that. After your post I did indeed go out and roll a defender. I did indeed start a team. I got a full pug for sewers in a matter of minutes in the face of all those AE calls for teams and teammates. We rocked the sewers faster than I've ever seen done before and the team went from 1-4 to 8-9 in an incredibly short time. It was a blast and reminded me what it's like to be The Hero to Heroes!

It's not about damage. It's not about kill-count. It's not about attacking. It's about knowing, in your heart and not your mind, that your team stays close to you because that's where they feel safe. It's about knowing that if your bar goes red the team's survival instincts will take over and protect you at all costs because you're the one that MUST live. It's about knowing that every person on that team will have added you to their friends list and want you on their team every chance they get.

A blaster is a killer.
A controller is a fighter.
A scrapper is a warrior.
A tanker is a protector.

A Defender is a Hero!

And THAT is faith.

Yeah, pretty much. Ever since and even before powerset proliferation, "being a Defender" has been mostly about attitude. The powersets are already spread all over the place in Blasters, Controllers, and Corrupters.

The thing that makes a Defender a Defender is his/her attitude. If you have that attitude, the attitude of the "combat medic" as Jock used to say, the attitude to shoot the enemy in the face after tossing someone a band-aid, then you're a Defender, no matter what AT you're playing.

Great Manifeto! Love the mentality it puts across! Strangely, I adopted this mentality when I created and begun playing my Defender. Empath/Assault with stealth/TP. Having discovered this community here on this thread I feel at home and not out of place. I pride myself on making sure all enemies don't get get close enough when in large numbers. M30 granade launcher does wonders with this especially with a Range/KB Enc. wedged in it
I am also good at dealing with larger mobs by picking them off one by one using TP Foe. Plus with still only one pick on primary 'Heal Aura' and the rest stacked into Assault and stealth/TP etc... I felt I'd built a monster, now I don't feel so ashamed!

Background: I was running my TA/Archery Defender on a mission team. Rest consisted of two Scrappers, two Blasters, a Tank, a Controller and an Empath Defender.

Team Leader to me: Hey Moon (character's name was Crescent Moon), whenya gonna help wit the heals?

Me: I don't get Healing Arrow until lvl 18 and Recovery Arrow until 20.

(Later, after I dinged 18) Team Leader: Hey Moon, didja skip Healing Arrow?

I have to say that the round of snickers from the rest of the team was worth the aggrivation.

I was invited to an all-Defender superteam once. Typical 'built 8 of X and try to race to 50' kind of thing. The organizer was posting his idea on the Forums asking which would be best...all the same build or spread across the field? He was thinking of the layers of shields from Sonic, Cold and FF. I suggested that such a thing would be effective but could be boring with the endless buffing and shielding going on. I suggested that the whole team be TA and then ran down the numbers with all the cool stuff we'd have by lvl 12. The Secondaries could be whatever the players wanted.

It was a hoot. There was some dissention in the ranks but we found 8 willing sacrif...er...volunteers and tried it one weekend. We had the Diff turned to 11 by lvl 14 and never looked back. It required some coordination...we couldn't race off alone without serious risk...but when we faced our first Red Boss at lvl 7 and Held him before he could blink we knew we had a winner.

So for all the Blasters, Blappers, Scrappers, Scrankers and all the other high-damage/low respect players: The next time 8 of you take 15 minutes to take out a GM or an AV just remember that ONE of us would have made it easier. Two of us would have made it MUCH easier. And 8 of us wouldn't have needed you at all...

Here's one to add, from a scrapper.

If you are the type that bails on the party, you know, "I'm sorry, I got booted." when the countdown to log off was there for all to see, delete your defender now. You have no business in the business. You don't mind me playin meat shield but when it's hot the way WE like it, you're gone in 30 seconds. Telling a scrapper not to die in battle is like tellin a bear not to scratch his backside on a tree.

This is not to the majority of you who faithfully heal under fire, but to those whose faithfulness is...weak.
