ATI Issues and Settings Recommendations

is this screwiness just for coh?
[/ QUOTE ]
For the most part, yes.
Right before I bought my 8800gts, and this was a major reason I did so, I was playing The Witcher. With whatever Cat driver I had at the time and the X1950XTX, I was getting a lot of graphics issues. Cleaned out all the ATI software, installed the 8800gts, and all those issues were gone.
That may have been Witcher specific just like so many of the issues here are CoH/V specific.
Don't worry about what I said about your screenshot. It looks fine and you probably won't notice any difference if you hop cards.
ATI users need to know the following for this game:
Disable Bloom
Disable Depth of Field
Keep Water FX Off or Low
Disable Desaturation FX
Allow the CCC and not the game to manage FSAA and AF.
This may or may not change in the future.
Be well, people of CoH.
Just figured out why it looks "dirty" to you... just not sure what's causing it -- I do have DOP and Bloom off.
I just noticed these hairline SCRATCHES all over the place in COH. I was freaking out 'cause I thought my monitor was scratched but.... it's only in COH. I didn't notice 'em before because as I as said... they're hairline.
This is a stupid question but how do an ATI Radeon 9800 Pro compare with the ATI Radeon 9550 (stealth edition). I have to replace my 9800 b/c its fried itself and wondered if the 9550 was close to the same quality. I have a 5 year old computer that uses AGP cards.
Thanks for the help.

The Witcher uses a highly modified version of the NWN engine, which is OpenGL based, just like CoX, and AMDs problematic OpenGL support rears it's ugly head again.
How are you liking the game now that you've gone Green?
I held out on an initial purchase due to reported technical issues.
Now i'm glad i did, as they've announced a sort of Director's Cut version to be released 09/16/08

Less so, apparently. But that had nothing to do with going Nvidia. Considering I still don't use Bloom, Depth of Field or Desaturation Effects, there's been no difference beyond FSAA not looking as sharp and performance going up a bit.
Be well, people of CoH.
Don't you also need to turn off water effects when you go red?
It looks really impressive in water now in CoV on my 8800 GTS. If I can get these features on a 4870 then I'm definately upgrading.
Depth of Field is that "haziness towards the horizon" right? When you turn DoF off does it just look crisp all the way out to max range?
What are desaturation effects exactly?

Water on Low works with ATI. Only difference is a strange reflection when in the sewers.

Yup and yup.

I believe that the only usage currently is the shift to sepia tone during flashback missions.

I am having an in game issue with a form of lag. Every time I attack the game will pause or slightly chug, for about a second. I am running a radeon 800XT AGP with a Pentium 4 3Ghz and havn't had a problem till recently. Went into safe mode to see if it was a graphic problem but the same thing was happening. Any suggestions?
I'm running a 4870 here and just standing around, with no AA or AF on (and all in-game settings set to the "standard" ATI values - e.g. no DoF or bloom, no desaturation, etc), I'm getting about 15 FPS standing around in Skyway City. This is on Vista x64. I've been messing with it for a few days now - there's nothing enabled in CCC; it's set to "Balanced" on the default visual settings for 3D. I actually even have the card overclocked like hell. It destroys Crysis and murders basically everything else I've thrown at it, but CoH barely even runs. Other OpenGL apps like Enemy Territory: Quake Wars and a bunch of open-source stuff all run fine. Beautifully, even. Tabula Rasa runs great too. Guess I'll go play that.
My notebook with an ATI Mobilility Radeon 9700 has been having a strange problem since Issue 12 hit. Occasionally, when opening the Contact Windows, or Character Info screens (basically anything that shows that small graphic of the character or NPC in a window) the entire system freezes. Even after an upgrade to recent drivers (I found out that previously, the drivers hadn't been upgraded since 2006. Eesh! The game had been running fine, however), I still get this problem. Even though I don't believe the card is AGP-based, I did try enabling Fast Write, to no avail. I have all of the in-game settings on Minimum, so practically everything that normally causes ATI troubles is turned off. Does anyone have an idea of what could be causing this? This issue never happened prior to I12, even with the ancient drivers.

Did you add the multi-core processor switch?
Thanks for the info-I am getting an ati X1650PRO with 512 mb's of ram. I know about nvidia but I don't know if the card I am buying is enough card for me. My nvidia card just died and ati cards are just as good from what I heard but cheaper-well except for coh/cov because the dev's will not fix the code. I'll be reading your tweaks and fixes soon.
Yeah I edited this post.

From what I have seen the multi-core switch is no longer needed as the game now uses all processors by default. I think that was fixed a couple of issues ago from what I have read.
To the guy with the 4870, I can't say I know that card as I own a 2900XT, but I get 60 fps just sitting around most zones until the action gets high. Some zones are tougher because of a lot of distant objects being rendered. You definitely want to try turning down some settings to see if you find what is causing the problem. If you have AA on, turn it off in this game. ATI really doesn't have AA working well right now.
I have everything set to max except AA which is off. So I know you should be able to get better frame rates.
You did not mention the rest of your system specs. Do you have 2GB of RAM? That's a must with Vista.
Anyone have any thoughts/recommendations on running the game on a 4850?(4GB RAM, 3GHz processor, if that matters)
Just picked one up but haven't hooked anything up, yet.
yah I just got a 4870 - to replace my 8800 gt. Now I am wondering why> coh looks so crappy on it. Everything else runs like a dream - and it kills 3dmark06. Maybe if a enter a costume in the amd/coh costume contest that looks as crappy as the graphics - I will win?
I'm running the 4870 512 on my system and the graphics look exquisite with everything maxed. I'm running a Q9500 2.83GHz OC'd to 3.5 GHz, 4 GB DDR2, Vista 64-bit. They even looked fabulous on my old CRT. So, I'd say that crappy graphics aren't due to the card alone (unless it's a bad card, which could happen).
Too many alts and not enough time.
Any word on the 8.10 drivers (October 15)? I'm installing them now so I'll see if anything breaks.
ASUS P5Q Pro motherboard
Core 2 Duo E7200, OC'd to 3.17GHz
4GB RAM
XP Pro SP3
Radeon HD4850
EDIT: No issues with the game but of note - fan speed settings were added to the Catalyst Control Panel. Now I don't have to rely on modified BIOSes or profile hacks to keep the card at a decent temperature.

No issues with 8.10 here, beyond the usual. :/

Is the issue with the enhancement screen and the mouse cursor (those of you have have to deal with this problem know exactly what I'm talking about) an issue that might be able to be fixed by the NCSoft team, or is it in ATI's ballpark? Kind of annoying, particularly when I am trying to respec a high-level character and have all those IO's to shuttle around.

Unknown. Considering that the issue didn't appear until the X1*** series cards, (and still doesn't exists on cards prior to that series,) I'd lean toward placing the blame on AMD/ATI.

[/ QUOTE ]I've dealt with that literally since I started CoH, since I got my 1800 like 2 weeks afterwards. Now I have a 4850, and I LOVE IT. Everyone looks so fantastic! And runs so fast and smooth! BUT when I turn the water details on, good as it looks, it's really screwed up, lol. Don't suppose there's a workaround for this (yet?)?
Until I hear otherwise, I believe absolutely nothing has changed and the settings at the start of the thread are still the way to go:
FSAA and AF managed by the CCC and disabled in game.
Water Low or Off.
Bloom, Depth of Field, Desaturation Effects Off.
Be well, people of CoH.
Something has changed, either in the ATI updates or the CoH updates. I have no idea what, but I get a lot more lag than I used to get this time last year. I know that it's not server side lag, since my teamates don't seem to have the issue.

Unfortunately, that could also be your ISP. Several factors there could be affecting your lag or lack thereof.
One is more people in your neighborhood on the same cable connection due to more folk staying home more often. Another is a change in the routing of your connection.
Unless your teammates are using the same connection as you do (i.e. in the same household or nextdoor neighbors), it can't be ruled out as the cause.

as for my ccc settings -- seems not to matter too much. only thing that really changes is jaggies. this is the best i could get it and if you folks are telling me it's not so hot that makes me sad....

now thinking about a 8800 or a 9800.
