Overheard Dinner Conversation
It's always cute when nerds who play MMOs make fun of other nerds who play MMOs.
Geek friends of mine used to have fun going to late-night restaurants and engaging in absolutely meaningless, but very animated gibberish conversations as they ate, just to watch the faces of the people who were listening in. It became a little game (they were actors) to keep the voice and tone totally serious while stringing together absolutely meaningless phrases- and responding appropriately.
Now they just post on gaming forums.
What would you rather talk about? What is wrong with talking about an MMO as opposed to say the depressing news of the world?
Heh, you're the one who went to a restaurant named after an IO Set.

Hey, you're from Austin! That's where this happened! Were you eating at Freebird's last night??

To the OP, another puhflooogervillian playing CoH/V? Howdy, neighbor. You talking the Freebirds between Parmer and Howard?
Be well, people of CoH.

Heh this is where it gets interesting.
My gaming group and I like to talk geek-talk in front of the 'norms' . That's my Geekiness IN YOUR FACE. Perhaps not the most positive interaction possible but it gives us giggles.
When I was younger, we used to play Champions at my friend's dorm. We'd play for hours and hours. Then at the wee hours, we'd head for home. But not before going to Dunkin Donuts and talk about the game for a few hours afterward. Possibly making new characters or trying to make some villain or hero from a book or movie.
Sleep is for the dead, or was at that age...

So I get off work yesterday and have time to kill before a meeting later in the evening. I run some errands and then eat dinner at Freebird's, a local burrito joint. I'm trying to work on a story I'm writing while I eat, and these 3 guys sit down at the table next to me. And for the next hour, they engage in an extended conversation about a recent computer game campaign. I'm assuming it's World of Warcraft or something similar -- druids and healers and feral armor and tanks.
FOR AN HOUR!!!!
And when I left, they WERE STILL AT IT!!!!
Sigh. Please, if there is a higher power, don't let me ever turn into that..... Posting in the CoH forums while at work is bad enough...

I think Andy can use your support.
I propose several questions over which you may mull:
1) Why is it okay to make fun of other people that play a different game?
2) Why is it okay to make fun of other people for playing games?
3) Why is it okay to make fun of other people?
The basis of this thread is flaming some people who can't defend themselves. Why are they flameworthy? They enjoy something. That's it.
You are actually openly mocking someone for enjoy something. They just have a different balance than you, and that makes them mock worthy.
Man, I could discuss the Effort Values of Pokemon for three hours without getting bored. I could also weave that same conversation into that state of my nation, the injustice of the people of my culture, the current state of religion across the world, and what my favorite book series is recently, but the last one's easy .
You saw one aspect of their personality, in one moment of it, and you want all of us to join in?
Not only is it a rather offensively cruel concept, but you went to gamers for support on making fun of gamers.
Hm. That about covers it.

soooooo... you go to a MMO forum to complain about people talking about another MMO by themselves in a restaurant? big freakin deal. me and my buddies used to hang out at perkins all the time because they were open 24 hours and had the "bottomless cup of soda". so we'd be there all night sometimes just talking about geek stuff (like MMOs) because it was a comfortable place to do so. Heck it was tradition that after the LARP everyone would go to perkins for a few hours.

Oh... I can recall two of our more flagrant attention-magnets getting a table together and started playing the "young and in love" act so well. If you just heard their tone and saw their conduct, you'd assume they were talking about something totally romantic and potentially scandalous. I think one night might have had an "automotive parts and pond critters," theme because years later one of the lasses was still known for her masterful ability to make "toad the axlegrease" sound totally x-rated).

Actually, the version for Guitar Hero WAS shortened to make sure that people's hands didn't explode when playing it. The longest version of the song was over 14 minutes long, with the GH version sitting at a paltry 9 minutes, 20 seconds
All this, and more, can be found here.
Incidentally, looking up that, I DID find this, which is on topic.

...when i hear people talking about a mmo or game or just about anything... i only need two pieces of information to find out if they are sucked into that mmm/game/whatever world:
1. time spent doin said thingy
2. the "F" word...no not that one "F" = Forums
If number 2 is yes...they are sucked in!
Freebird's is good, but I like Chipotle's rice better. And the Chipotle barbacoa is suuuuuuuper yummy!
