Hi there. I don't actually have anything constructive to add to this topic. I just dropped in to make fun of everyone who posted here, because this thread is, well, getting kind of long.

They all laughed at me when I said I wanted to be a comedian.
But I showed them, and nobody's laughing at me now!

Freebirds is so many levels above Chipotle that it really can't be debate. I can get Chipotle here in Dallas, which decreases it's value as cuisine exponentially.

[/ QUOTE ]

Freebirds is also in Dallas. There's one off Greenville and one in Addison, I think. Even though Freebirds is in Dallas, I still find their burrittos tasty.

Lady A, around here the SCA *is* the Haunted Trails group. Of course, living in a city with the motto "Keep Austin Weird", it's fairly hard to shock the locals these days.

We did manage when we came froma rained out local event and wound up going into a nearby Shoney's (since closed) for some food. The guy at the door looked very grim and demanded we put all of our edged weapons in a coatcheck. 15 people and roughly 45 weapons weapons later, we were seated. The waitress was pretty nice about it though.

Ah, I have no knowledge of your SCA... even vaguely wondered if it was an offshoot of the SPCA... which leads to some pretty odd thoughts considering the context of the post.

But anyway, around about August when we've got most of the planning building done, we'll sometimes practice new make-up techniques and such. Liquid latex is icky! But anyway, walk in to a restaraunt dressed for a haunted house during August.

Having read that, I looked at my wife and said, "hon, I will be that 90 year old man in line one day."

When I was younger, we used to play Champions at my friend's dorm. We'd play for hours and hours. Then at the wee hours, we'd head for home. But not before going to Dunkin Donuts and talk about the game for a few hours afterward. Possibly making new characters or trying to make some villain or hero from a book or movie.

I remember way back when Denny's first introduced the Grand Slam Breakfast and you could get this huge breakfast for $1.99. It became a weekly tradition to play our D&D games until the wee hours, then trek down the road from the college dorm and spend more time chowing down on cheap food and coffee while recapping the night. I imagine the waitresses must have thought it was odd. I was usually too wrapped up in plotting out the next adventure to notice.

I liked thinking it was an offshoot of the SPCA better.

Um, we have horses...and dogs and hunting birds! And I have two cats to help hold down all my fabric. So that sort of counts...
Now I'm going to have to go get somebody to draw me a pic of an SCA/SPCA merger

If you really want to get noticed in a restaraunt, enter dressed in full plate armor complete with dents from the days battles.
I used to be in the SCA (Society for Creative Anachronism).

I was in a semi-active Counter-Strike clan a couple years ago. we signed up for CAL and whatnot. turns out most of us lived pretty close to each other, so we met up for beers. I remember the first time, I couldn't stop myself from calling everyone by their handles instead of their real names. picture five late-20's, early-30's seemingly normal guys sitting around a garden table in a bar, surrounded by whiskey and beer, arguing over strats for Dust2. even now if I happen to give one of them a call on the phone, it's always, "hey monkey, it's scarab"

MMZ is a former gaming clan turned turned drinking crew. The clan totals over 300 people but only 40 or so are active much anymore.

Did something like that one time... Went to Burger King in garb after a Shire business meeting. A lady asked me if I was in the SCA - and I couldn't help but respond "No, I'm in a play!".

Non SCAers may or may not get the joke....

Why would you want to talk about anything BESIDES computer game!?! Its a multimillion dollar industry that helps drive PC technology and home electronics advancment. Its an interactive entertainment that tops passive "you tell me what happens" entertainments like tv and books. What are you talking about? Oh thats right...you kept to yourself. Like a loner. Serial killers are often loners.

[/ QUOTE ]

The story I related in my post predates the internet, so computer games didn't even come close to table top RPGs.

Back in college, the Gamers' Guild used to hit the all night diner after our Friday night meet, in groups ranging in size from five to thirty. The discussions were frequently stuff that would get us a nice Homeland Security surveillance team nowadays, including but not limited to:

* The best way to distribute an aerosol poison using only Renaissance technology.
* Decomposition stages of necrotic tissues and the medical hazards thereof.
* Tactical planning to circumvent Imperium nuclear dampers so we could set off a nuke to destroy an Ancient doomsday weapon.
* Placement of undead-infested graveyards as defense-in-depth vs invasion.
* Longbowman training techniques, with vehement disdain from the crossbow enthusiasts.
* Comparisons of different sorts of undead creatures and their suitability for various military incursions. (Can you tell we had necromancy issues?)
* Sculpting the Fiesta Nachos into a model of an abdominal exit wound. (Personal favorite)
