I hate you Devs
[ QUOTE ]
And, apparently, they also don't involve wondering if I'm going to get ganked "in good fun" by Lord Recluse.
[/ QUOTE ]
Yeah, one should feel uncomfortable when they are forced to add that to the "Party Preparations" check list.
I like the holiday events, too, but they always feel a bit... light.
I dunno, my first Holiday event was the most recent Halloween, and to be hoenst, I was kind of expecting the entirity of the Roguse Isles to be decorated, with the characters speaking in "spook speak".
What we got was the Night setting switched to permanent.
I know there were a lot of things to do, and I liekd them, but the presentation was a bit off, ya know?
The events in which the Devs are focused have a lot more going on in a more centralized place, so those are the gold nuggets for me.

I think I caught a glimpse of Positron during the CoV end-of-beta before the hundreds of Mastermind pets and whatnot brought my video card to its knees
[/ QUOTE ]
That happened at this event, as well, but it wasn't lag, it was the sheer number of people was literally swarming the enemies. I saw a crowd of players around a mass of Spider Legs (most I've ever seen of Lord Recluse 'in person') and, when I was on the floor dead, I saw Sicirro (sp?).
Even five feet away, they manage to be elusive!

Yeah, the original 2004 Halloween event was cooler. Not because it was all that different from the 2006 one, so much as because it was the first time they had done one of the "altering the game world" events, so the whole thing was fresh and surprising. And there were Eochais everywhere, which was hilarious. No costume salvage, though.
(And lest people think I'm just nostalgic for the Winter Lords and their mad expeez, I missed that event, alas. I blame my untimely absence from the game that month for the fact that, with 30 months of veteran time, I still don't have a level-50 hero. )
I was less impressed with Halloween 2006 villain-side than hero-side, but I think that was largely because I'm just less impressed with the red-side setting overall. The Rogue Isles are so grungy and depressing anyway that you can't really get into the trick-or-treating spirit there, or at least I can't. If anything, they look better at night, which short-circuits the "atmosphere" the perpetual-night setting is supposed to create.
I had just logged in on my tank when that happened. I came into the dance floor and see nothing but orange names...I was all, WHA???? and then I face planted...no toggles on. I rezzed in the Hospital and promptly toggled on everything and went to tanking...it was a blast, never had that many 'trollers and defenders buffing me!!!
As for the reason why the Devs did it? I would have to guess because they finally got tired of everyone calling them on every time they entered the Pocket D instances...so they took the challange.
I had great fun on that one and earned the title "Choas is eternal" because that is tied to my Taunt.
All in all, everyone there looked to be having fun and kept coming back for more.

@Necromanis
I'll admit, that was fun!
GO Pookie! It's ya bifrday! It's ya birfday! GO Pookie! Go! Go!
I still think they should have spawned Hamidon on the ski slopes.
Or at least Sally.

Yikes. Speaking of lag.
that would have been a riot...but with 10-15 GM's causing the lag like they were....Hami would have put me into the negative framerates!!!

@Necromanis
Well, the lag isn't from Hamidon, it's from 100+ heroes there with him. With each pocket D being limited to 50 there wouldn't have been that problem. At least I think it's 50.
And I personally had a blast attacking the huge groups of monsters and villains. Debt doesn't matter because it's on test, rp doesn't matter because it's on test, and the hospitals are 50 feet away from the battle. It actually made PvP fun as opposed to the usual pvp build players easily defeating the pve build players again and again. Especially if they can easily two shot them.

So, let's recap. A group of developers (presumably) turned an advertised social event into a festival of griefing, exhibiting behaviors (fighting in Pocket D, camping the reclamators) that can and have led to suspensions for mortal players.
Just so I'm clear on this, is that okay because they were developers, or because it happened on the test server and not to anybody's "real" characters?
Just so I understand the precise configuration of the double standard being applied.

Because it was fun?
[/ QUOTE ]
Apparently so, but why? That's what I was getting at - what made this fun when the same behavior in the same place under different circumstances is a suspending offense? That's been answered to my satisfaction now. I get it. I don't necessarily agree with it, but I acknowledge that that has more to do with my own baggage. I have this unsporting hang-up about advertised rules being enforced.

Don't be so silly about rules - there was no debt, and it was on Test - so no change to your PvP rep or anything - and they weren't showboating either - there was no way they could have won a fight against so many Heroes - they came, they fought, they died, they entertained us

So there were tons of people and not one took any kind of evidence?
Check other pictures.
Also, if you read above, I had quite a picture, one that my room mate lost...

Ya, someone was actually bagging Ghost Widow for quite a while in one of the instances (good-naturedly, I'm sure). Anyways, I guess GW got tired of being baited & spawned the AV's for this guy (& the rest of us) to back up his words.
Wasn't like they did it without warning. There had been broadcasts by Lighthouse previously that Arachnos minions had been seen...they were spawned & taken care of quite easily. So everyone started clamoring for AV's & GM's.
The Dev's were only too happy to oblige.
Added some spice to what would have been just another party with everyone standing around /e dancing
I had a ball
DAMNIT! Now I'm sorry I missed it.
That would have been a blast to see.

If there's no debt, so no harm was done, then all in fun. If there was debt, even though it was on test, I would have been unhappy as well.

.... Why? Debt is ridiculous to worry about when it's an anniversary event.
I mean ... if it's your 30th birthday party and someone squirts everyone on the lawn with whipped cream and then turns on the sprinklers, you'll still have FUN. That's the point. It was a game, within a game.
We all knew there would be monsters. Heck, I went BACK to make sure I got in on some of that monster action. Because it's FUN.
Following the rules of Pocket D? Who cares? It's a backstory that *practically no one cares about* anyway, live or test.
It's *on test*! Test is, whether you like to admit it or not, NOT our playground normally. It's the devs' and they can do with it what they will. They can in fact SCRUB IT BARE of any trace of our characters, SGs and bases. Yeah they'd piss a lot of people off, but we'd get over it...
Sheesh the things people go through to throw a terrific party, and the lack of comprehension about the 'fun' to be had at them... The place was a SLIDESHOW. I was laughing so hard the whole time blasting and healing and blasting and healing... It was 20 times better than any other fight anywhere in the game.

When did they ever camp the reclaimators, btw?

Toc, man, if the developers cared that I hate PvP, they wouldn't have inflicted it on the game in the first place. They're certainly not going to let the fact that I don't think it's cool stop them from griefing a test party.
...
Dang, why was I on Pocket D 2. That would've been fun! And maybe I would finally get my freakin' paycheck.
