I don't believe I ever played just an expansion from an online game, so here's the list by first entry:

1 warcraft
2 eq
3 daoc
4 cox
5 eq2
6 ac
7 ffx1
8 e&b
9 ao
10 planetside
11 eve
12 ddo
13 swg
14 sims
15 auto assault

Now that looks a bit more reasonable. Gratz CoX on fourth place!

The best thing I can say about CoH is this: This is the only MMO I have played where I don't cancel my subscription when I get tired of it. It isn't for the veteran rewards either. Its becuase I know I will pick it up again next month and I want it to still be here when I do.

I feel sorry for anything that was ranked under Auto Assault.

Can you not solo at all in DDO?

Be well, people of CoH.

Posted

You can but it becomes extremely difficult around level 4 or so. Earlier for non melee classes.

Posted

Yeah. Even some of the "solo" level dungeons (which now go as high as level 6; the level cap being 14 as of today) are tough to solo.

Guess I'll toss that free trial I've had on my desk for over a month.

Be well, people of CoH.

What I find interesting is that CoH has the second highest number of reviews listed behind WoW

As I recall, Clerics and Paladins solo rather well. My Wizard got absolutely killed every time I tried to solo past about level 2, though. My Rogue fared similarly.

I don't find this list to be very accurate.

I can't believe any sane person would rank DAoC over CoH/V.

Posted

doac was supposedly one of the best for pvp, alot of the people i knew from ultima online and eq left for doac.

Posted

It's a historically orientated list. Go back to in it 5 years time and you'll be able to see how people rated EQ and CoH/V compared to, oh, World of Darkness Online and MUO.

It's based on reviews made for the game at the time.

Wow, DDO got hammered.

[/ QUOTE ]

Cause DDO isnt that good. I beta'd it. I went live with it. I tried to like it . . . it didnt work out.

[/ QUOTE ]

Same, only I didn't beta it. I cancelled my billing on it before completing the first month that was included in the box.

I wanted to like it, I did. But the controls turned me off within the first 20 minutes, and the gameplay made me want to throw it in the garbage. I'm surprised I lasted as long as I did playing it.

[/ QUOTE ]

My favorite thing about DDO was the combat system. I loved being able to swing a weapon and hit monsters without actually having to target anything. Being able to dodge arrows was pretty sweet too.

Everything else mentioned about the game is what drove me to quit though. lack of soloability, lack of a "world" feel, repetitious dungeons, horrid teams... the game still has so much potential, but it will never be realized

True, but most MMOs aren't nearly as predictable as DDO.

[/ QUOTE ]

O.o

Most MMOs I've played are more predictable as DDO. People know the maps and the combat is so slow you know almost exactly how the fight is going to go. DDO is at least fast paced enough to eliminate much the latter. The memorization of maps in DDO is just all the more apparent because secret doors and traps are such an obvious addition over other MMOs.

[/ QUOTE ]

The "problem" with DDO is that it actually has some pretty interesting quests that require you to think and do stuff that doesn't require fighting. The first time.

Other MMOs don't have that problem, simply because they are so predictable. There are rarely any puzzles to solve. The problem is that puzzles only challenge you the first time. After that (or even before, if you read a guide) it becomes quite dull. Which is a huge let down for someone like me, if you don't play with a group that know as much as you do. Being new, and playing with an experienced PuG stinks. Bigtime.

Cryptic's done an excellent job with CoX, and with i9 things are getting even better.

[/ QUOTE ]
Could have done.....this game had the potential to be fantastic but mistake after mistake kind of killed that. Not saying it's not a good game but, they did have the potential to be the best at one point.

4 things Cryptic does better than Blizzard, mob spawns based on team size, not being able to get a mission 15 levels above you, easier to target (well easier to see your target), and the character costume thing.

Sorry to say, Blizzard absolutely blows Cryptic out of the water on end-game content. Loot is cool! There is more stuff to run at 70 than leveling to 70. In CoH, you hit 50! Great! now go roll an alt and get that to 50.....gets old after 2 or 3 times let alone 9.

Here, have a reheated Hamidon and a new TF. Cryptic need to increase their end-game content dramatically. This game is just boring and I really hate to admit that.

Those are fair enough comments, although I disagree completely that loot is cool. Anything that separates the players from each other as much as loot did in WoW is just bad, in my opinion.

I think inventions are possibly the best version of 'loot' I've seen yet, but I've yet to see what the mid-long term consequences are, once everyone is stacking up IOs...

PlanetSide is #18! NC FTW! And it's listed at under $4

Figured I would give that game a shout-out since I played it for 2.5 years... CoH only recently surpassed it on my "game I've played the most" scale...

How is Asheron's Call 2: Fallen Kings number 8. Didn't that game close?

[/ QUOTE ]

Yes it did, December 31st, 2005, and its still on the top 10 list. Damn you Turbine and your game engine disputes!

I have to agree with the DDO bashers. For all the Altoholics its a pain to level up your third or fourth character, not fun.

There's actually a game/expansion titled "Rage of the Wookiees???"

I just died a little inside.

I'm at work so I can't follow the link. I understand that the ratings are a based on a compilation of reviews but where did the reviews come from? Where they are pulling reviews from could really skew the results.

And with regards to comparisons to movie reviewers, I find that I am far more likely to find a movie review useful than a game review. There are good game reviewers out there but the majority (IMHO) just recycle marketing hype provided them by the game company.

I read movie reviews and film criticism pretty regularly because I am a pretty big movie buff and I have seen varying decrees of quality in the writing. But over all the field is much more professional and credible to me than online game reviewers--many of whom apparently see their job as marketing rather than critical evaluation.

I find with movie reviewers I can find one that has the same taste as me and use his reviews to give me some idea of whether or not I'll enjoy it. Game reviews just seem to be about how much money the company paid the reviewer or the magazine and are IMHO quite worthless.

Clearly, some are better then others, as far as reviewing goes. Xbox mag is clearly NOT going to be that cynical of a reviewer (as every game appears ok), while many third party mags are fairly decent. On a scale of 1-10, they may not give out any 1's (even when deserved), but the games being rated 9 and 10 are almost always great.

I played EQ a lot, and COx is much better in movement (no huge continents to traverse by walking), as well as some penalty for death but not much (cant lose levels from dying, then dying more trying to get your gear back). Its also fairly decent missions and plots from 1-50.

I agree that they need to start making some post 50 and end game content. Shadow shard was supposed to be some of that, I think. Sadly, its a pain to travel around, and while its better now the TFs are too long for me to do them.

Now, I suspect IO is the end game. It will take a long time to fully IO out your toon. The problem is what to do with your tricked out toon? I think something (other than Hami or States/LR TF) needs to be added that makes having a level 50 fully outfitted really cool. Maybe a neat zone that has very tough monsters, where you need ho's, Sho's and IOs to win for some kinda epic powers or something.

Sounds like the incarnates would fit this plan, assuming they still plan on doing those at some point.

Heck, just adding new levels from 50 to 60 with some new power pools would be great.

Matrix online made number 43... THAT made me laugh.

Toontown online made number 46... That made me a tad bit depressed.

It was my second MMO, and it is VERY kid friendly. One of the reasons I went to it was because my child liked it. He said it was fun, and I saw it had better graphics then Runescape! That, and I was getting highly annoyed with Runescape to begin with. -_-

Does anyone in that game know how to freakin' type? *Throws up fist in anger.*

CoH is technically number three on the list. WoW expansions don't count.
