How to silence specific game sounds
Can anyone identify the 3 fire shield file names for the Fire tank? Fire Shield, Plasma Shield and Blazing Aura?

Odd Q. Does anyone know if a Silenced sound takes up less processing power than a normal sound? Seriously question.

Disclaimer: I'm not an expert. I don't even play one on TV
In my experience it doesn't noticeably change CPU workload either way (more/less). A file is still being loaded into memory. Data is still being sent to the sound card/chip. This is kind of a strange thing to say: a sound is still being played it is just silent.
Instead of a collection of various signals that end up as a noise we interpret as a recognizable sound it is a constant zero signal. Perhaps the sound card and speakers use less energy to accomplish this, but the data still has to be processed.
If the game engine were designed to examine sounds before they were played and not play the silent sounds then maybe. But I assume that the extra check would use more processing time than would be saved. Regardless, the game does not expect a sound file to be silent.
Just speculating here:
Even if there are some processing savings when it deals with about 1 second of zero volume signals it may have to do this more often. Almost all of the original sounds are longer than a second. It may have to repeat the 1 sec. of silence for the duration it expects. This might be why a zero length sound (no time or volume) causes problems. And why replacement sounds that are longer in duration that the original can cause problems too.
I do know that if you lower the sound effect and\or music volume slider to zero you get some performance increase (not much). That is because you are disabling all sounds of that type. No sound files of that type are loaded or processed at all.
IMO, silencing almost every sound in the game by replacing the sound files would not improve performance. Even if it did, it would not be noticeable enough to justify the effort as there are over 2,800 sound files.

first off, impkin you are my hero!!!!!!! or my most feared villain, whichever you prefer
i used this info and the email from impkin to get rid of the sounds that happen when i teleport. i love the power, but the sounds are just too loud relative to others and they drove me crazy. posting this here in the hopes that it may help others.
the files i changed were teletrans3.ogg and teletrans4.ogg . they are in the SoundPowers.pigg file.
can i rez him yet, or do we need to wait for vengeance?
Here's one I found that may help others:
Description: PVP warning siren with the countdown in Bloody Bay, Warburg etc.
Folder name: Arena
File name: BeepWarning.ogg
Just to clarify what KMad posted.
It's not possible to change .ogg files located in the .piggs. It is also against the EULA (End User License Agreement). Besides that, even if one could the launcher would detect it as an altered/corrupted .pigg and download the correct version.
What KMad meant was they silenced the sounds by twice copying a silent .ogg file into the data\sound\Ogg\Powers folder and renamed them with those file names.
Description: when traveling with teleport
Folder name: Powers
File name: teletrans3.ogg, teletrans4.ogg

oops you are exactly correct! in my giddiness about being happier with the sounds, i phrased things wrong.

I think it's Glow5_loop, but I'm not sure. Can anyone confirm?
I don't have a player on live with this power, only on test. However, my attempts to silence sounds on test has as of yet be unsuccessful. (it is past 5am, no sleep yet).
Thanks.
I would like to get rid of all sounds except for glowies and when people level. How would I go about making these two sounds louder than all the rest so that I can just turn my volume down and not hear the other sounds without having to make silence.ogg files for all of them?
Just an idea (untested): You could make very loud *.ogg files of the sounds you want, then use the technique described at the beginning of this thread to replace just those two sounds with extra-loud versions.
You might have to use alternate sounds for the "glowie" and level-up sounds. I don't know how you could record the sounds in-game to make .ogg files of them. And doing so might violate the EULA/ToS anyway (so don't do it).
How would i make the very loud .ogg sound file? Can you do that with audacity?

Any idea what the MM Merc Rifle's sounds are?
I'm rather sick of the piddly-sounding "puhpuhpuh" of burst, and the "pssst" of slug. I want to replace them with something more MANLY.

Once you open a suitable sound file in Audacity, you can adjust its "gain." (And "output volume" might help too.) You will likely have to do some trial-and-error experimentation to get what you need.
By the way, you can open any .wav in Audacity, edit it and save it as a .ogg file. You can even record new sounds with Audacity, if you have a mic hooked up to your computer. It's a very useful little program. And it's free!

In the official Training Room thread about Grandville, someone asked about silencing the looping Lord Recluse speech. I think the speech is cool (I even posted the text of it in that thread), but here's the info to silence it:
1. Download the silence.ogg file posted earlier in this thread.
2. Rename it to: RecluseVO3_loop.ogg
3. Place it in: C:\Program Files\City of Heroes\data\sound\Ogg\V_Grandville\
Note: Replace "C:\Program Files\City of Heroes\" with your City of Heroes (or CoHtest) root folder if you have the game installed in a non-default location.
That should silence his speech.
Still praying for knowledge regarding which loops are for rage and unyielding.
oh thank god I found them.
rage loop is: glow6_loop.ogg
unyielding: forcefield5_loop.ogg
I can finally turn the game off mute when I play my ss/inv brute. now all the other ss/inv brutes that have been forced to turn sounds off in this game (read: all of them) can play with sounds back on and not have it sound like you are living inside the engine of a ww1 biplane.
shame on you cryptic for making us fix the game ourselves.

Help me, you're my only hope!
I'm driven to distraction by Arctic Fog and despite searching can't find how to turn the sound off.
Please please please, anyone know which sounds are responsible for causing me to dement?
I'm really keen to turn the Arctic Fog noise off!
I just want to say Thank-You! to Impkin and all the others who contributed to this thread.
Due to a (slight) hearing disability, some noises were spoiling the game for me. Thanks again!

Thank you, thank you, thank you.
I'm still unable to silence Arctic Fog and now find myself not turning it on as it's such an unacceptable sound - please please please, has anyone any idea how to turn it off?

Powersfog.ogg
Powersfog_loop.ogg
Powersfog2.ogg
One of these perhaps? (haven't tested at all, just went through the list)
Odd Q. Does anyone know if a Silenced sound takes up less processing power than a normal sound? Seriously question.
'cause if so, there's several powers I'm going to end up silencing, just 'cause I use them so often and I don't need to hear the sound of them. (Hasten, heals, repeatable casted buffs, etc).
Just essential for me to hear Attacks, BU/Aim, and glowies I suppose. lol.
