Firstly, thank you so much Impkin for this guide!
I had always wanted a sonics blaster but I couldn't even deal with the sonic sounds from a teammate and would always have to mute sounds with any sort of sonics toon on team.
Now, I'm enjoying my sonics blaster immensely.
On villain side, I'd love to have a thermal healer so
I am desparately looking to silence the Thermal Rad sounds in COV, particularly "Warmth".
Does anyone know which files are responsible??

hi all,

wanted to come and give a bit back to this wonderful guide. after a bunch of trial and error, found the .ogg to silence crytal armor.

it uses: glow5_loop.ogg under the Powers folder.

thanks again to everyone that has contributed to this thread. it has made the experience much more enjoyable

After spending a couple hours, on two computers, trying to get this to work I must now fall on the sword and profess my stupidity.

CAN SOMEBODY HELP?

I created a "sound" directory under "data", then an "ogg" directory under "sound". I put my silent ogg file in the "ogg" directory. Here's where I get messed up. From the original post:

"You now have your base file location set. The sounds will be grouped in sub-folders inside the "ogg" folder. Each sound you wish to silence will go in a sub-folder. The name of the sub-folder depends on the sound."

What I don't get is this; will CoH automatically generate the sub-folders so that I can find the file that's making the annoying sound then replace it with my silent ogg file? If not, how on earth do I figure out what the file name and folder should be? What am I missing?

There are two things that I have which aren't standard: I'm installed to D drive and I already have a "data" folder because I have a mappack that used it and created a texture subfolder.

Can anybody help me here?

Are you talking about the activation? Because I don't hear anything after it activates, so I must already have that sound turned off if there's a hum.

I hear nothing but a continuous droning loop sound after its on. The activation I don't mind, but it is nonstop afterwards.

I can't play my Ice tank with the speakers on. The sound drives me batty.

No, it will not. CoH doesn't even want you overriding the files to begin with, it certainly won't help you.

Most posters will tell you what folder it's in. If it's power related, you'll most often use D:\City of Heroes\data\sound\Ogg\Powers as your folder. (You may have it in a different drive path but I posted what I thought would be as close as possible.)

The map pack has got you started, now just create the appropriate subfolders in sound and you're all set.

If anyone can specify what sound Ice Sword (Blaster Ice Manipulation) uses, I'd be greatful.

I've tried coldsword, coldsword1, coldsword2... but they don't appear to have any effect in either Powers or Weapons, so I don't know which files they might be.

Yeah, I'm still around.
When a sound irritates me enough to hunt it down and kill it I'll still post it here. Like this one:

Description: When a Rikti gun's blast hits a toon
Folder name: V_Powers

Possible sound files for Domination.
I have not tested these by silencing them I only saw the filenames when looking for the Rikti one above. Anyone who wants these silent please confirm these are the correct filenames.

Folder name: V_Powers
File names: domination1_loop.ogg, domination2_loop.ogg, dominationattack1.ogg, dominationdeactivate.ogg

I do have a Dominator and this is what they sound like to me:
domination1_loop.ogg, domination2_loop.ogg - while it is running and/or when it can be activated. There are some wind chimes not in these sound files.
dominationattack1.ogg - the boom-ish sound right when it is activated.
dominationdeactivate.ogg - when it shuts down.

Has something changed recently, that this no longer works?

If I hypothetically extracted the psionic4.ogg file, converted it into a wave file, edited it to a more tolerable wadda wadda wadda, then re-converted it back to an ogg file, dropped it in the folder city of heroes\data\sound\Ogg\Powers; that the game would then replace the sound????

If i could then verify the path with a pigg viewer, that the subsitute was linked?

Would I then hear the new sound in the game??

If I don't, would that simply mean it wasn't the file I was looking for??? While psionic4.ogg sounds pretty similar to the psionic dart, the game may actually be using another file for that sound??

Sorry about that, this whole EULA thing is a bit confusing. How can ANYONE post ANY information regarding ogg files, without first viewing a pigg to see what the file names are??

All this double-speak is making my head spin.

Manipulating an ogg, contained within a game pigg is a EULA violation, but subsitution is not???

That is 'technically' what we are doing, isn't it??

So it really doesn't matter what sound bite I use as my replacement, as long as I do not touch the existing ogg files, and piggs??

The only thing that really matters is the audio format "ogg", the file name, and the folder path created within the COH directory??

Is it possible that COH/COV would cache some of these sound files, for later use??

I ask, because I sampled the sound i wanted to change in game, with a mic; edited the sound in another program, converted it to an ogg, then dropped in the specified directory.

I took at least 3 restarts of the game for my new sound to start being used.
