Am I supposed to heal if I can?
No, you should have formed a team.
The monster spawns (Babbage, Jurassik, Kraken, Jack in Irons etc.) are supposed to be 8 man team events. That's why they are like that.
It's not what ever person does the most damage, but whatever team does the most damage. So forming a team with the other hunters would have been in all of your best interests. On a team worrying about whether or not you are going to get the badge because you didn't do enough damage becomes insignificant. Thus allowing you to heal your team mates.

Since the badge system doesn't award everyone who fights with a badge, only the person or team that does the most damage, which makes fighting Jack and others an every man for himself deal, unlike Luska and the Paladin construction,

Where do people get this stuff?
The only things that do not award a badge to everyone are regular monsters like the Synapse Task Force version of Babbage. Otherwise all giant monsters will give badges to everyone who paticipates as long as they do damage, or are on a damage dealing team.

Aaah, The Internet. A most wretched hive of scum and villainy.
No it won't. You (your team) have to do 20% of the damage to the giant monster (I believe) in order to recieve a badge. This is to prevent someone flying overhead, zapping one hit on the monster, and then leaving and getting the badge.
No risk, no reward.
As to the OP, yeah, you should have asked for an invite into the team. For every monster I've helped with, I've received a badge just because I join teams every single time.
Let me clarify this. I was invited to a team twice. I declined the invites because I don't believe I should be forced to team just to get a badge. If someone makes a contribution then they should get a badge regardless of whether they are teamed or not. I watched a level 30 Scrapper get up close and personal with Jack once, take damage, inflict damage, and not get a badge out of it. He took the risks and made a contribution to the effort, but didn't get a badge. I have seen people die trying to beat him. No badge, but they get the debt.
I didn't get this off the Internet, I saw it happen. I also watched someone who located Sally working to get a team together only to have someone swoop in and hit her before they could get the team together, which kept them from getting her. I can understand the 'fly-by and run to get the badge' reasoning, but I can't agree with the 'you have to be teamed if you want a badge' reasoning.

Ok, so I was a little off. I figured that there would be some protection to prevent a player from shooting once and moving on.
But I know that more than one team can get the badge for a giant monster. And even if it is the 20% like you said, that's nowhere near the majority of the damage.
Of course, it's always better to get on a team for these kinds of fights.

The rules of the game have changed my friend.
Only the Paladin construction event and Luska are 'All comers paid' zone-events now.
Jack in Irons, Eochai, Kraken, Babbage, Jurassik, Adamastor are all "Damage Dealt gets the Goodies" badges.
And I suppose Sally could be considered the same, but she's weird and odd.
Although, umm, you are teaming to get the badge, regardless of if you accept a team invite or not. Unless you propose that you could have solo'd Jack in Irons. Then you were working with those other heroes to take him down.
And if you actually could solo Jack in Irons since the WL Giant Monster patch, your build needs to be readjusted, because something there is fruity.

You don't have to team, just do the most damage. Seeing as you are a controller, it is not likely to happen in a month of Sundays solo. You don't have to agree with it, but if you want the badge team up. Or you can continue your futile attempts at soloing Godzilla.

Well, that's how the game was made. Sorry, you want the badge, you should have teamed. You would have gotten both the badge and better XP for it.
You're talking about a solo scrapper/defender/whatever against a giant monster. Seriously, the scrapper didn't take him down, and of course he almost died, I mean, it's a GIANT MONSTER.

Good luck getting the TF badges solo, then.
I'm not trying to solo Jack or any other monster, that would be futile and I know it. I don't have a problem with teamwork. I actually enjoy fighting Luska with a lot of other players. It's quite a sight seeing 20 or more people working together to bring him down. It must be fun or my main wouldn't have died 21 times and acquired the debt that comes with it.
I know I'm not going to do enough damage alone to get the badge, even if I reach level 50. Right now it's at 29. It's the idea I have a problem with. I can take my main into that fight, solo, set the healing aura on automatic, give everyone around her healing, regeneration aura, recovery aura, hit someone with adrenaline boost, fortitude and clear mind, making it possible for everyone around her to continue the attack, and that would constitute teamwork, even if I never fired off a shot, which would amount to Neutrino Bolt and X-Ray Beams, hardly known as damage dealing powers. It takes quite awhile for her to take out seven Level 34 Sorceress of the Winds and she's a 38. But it sure is fun watching all that lightning fly around.
I simply just don't agree with the 'you have to be teamed' concept if someone is actively in the fight giving their best effort. Not just me, but everyone. If I want the badge bad enough I'll join a team and then hope we do enough damage to get it, but I simply just don't agree with the present system.
I really don't think this will change.
And most people are more than happy to invite you to their team just for the duration of the Monster fight. I've honestly never had a problem with this.

Captain Warhead, Rad/Rad Defender, Virtue

Whether a person agrees with something or not is irrelevant when it is true. Imagine I say I disagree with needing a parachute to leave an airborne aircraft in order to live?
There are several badges you may never, ever earn soloed based on your AT. If you want the badge, pay the price and team for the event. Badges are optional. I do not like teaming in general but when someone said the ghost ship was cruising through, my non-blaster joined a team and didn't get very many ghosts but got the badge with the team. When I was on with my blaster, I could have soloed the badge but did what I thought was fair and teamed with those who cannot wipe out dozens of them in a few minutes (controllers, tankers, defenders).
Only you can decide how badly you want these badges, but the game is setup that teaming is the best way and in some cases about the only realistic way.

When did they change this? Is there an official post on the matter?
I don't disagree that you should have a team to do these, but what if more than 8 people want to help with a giant monster? Do the extras get screwed if they don't do the most damage?
I definately think that these monsters should give the badge if your team does at least 20 or so percent of the damage. That way everyone is happy and they could possibly put in bigger giant monsters like Lusca, but ones that don't have multiple parts to beat on.

It was changed around the time of the Winter Lords, as to offical posts, I don't off hand. But that's the line you get from support now.
Surprised me too, unforunately . You might be able to find in the patch notes, but I'm not sure if it was ever explicitly mentioned.

Someone I know and trust in game, described how he maniupulated a set of people, such that 3 evenyl balananced teams went after a GM (was about 18 people in total).
I believe the figure is 25% but there is no official source on that.
All got the badge.
@Catwhoorg "Rule of Three - Finale" Arc# 1984
@Mr Falkland Islands"A Nation Goes Rogue" Arc# 2369 "Toasters and Pop Tarts" Arc#116617
If, as mentioned above, the cutoff for the badge is something like 20% of the monster's hit points, wouldn't it be possible for 5 teams of 8 to each do 20% of the damage and for 40 people to get the badge at once?

Did so.
No badge. Only the team members got it.

Alright, Jack of Irons was located near the throne in Croatoa earlier just before servers went down for maintenance. Four people there to take him down. I only saw two others but a blaster may have been out of view. I know there was one there before the fight started.
Since the badge system doesn't award everyone who fights with a badge, only the person or team that does the most damage, which makes fighting Jack and others an every man for himself deal, unlike Luska and the Paladin construction, if you aren't being hurt and don't need healing, are you expected to fire off a healing spell to help someone else who may get the badge? Like Transfusion if you're a kinetic and it won't affect you if you're away from the target?
Since this system is more 'survival of the fittest' mentality, and not a cooperative effort, which would be more in keeping with City of Villains, 'no honor amongst thieves' comes to mind, why should someone heal if they want the badge, too?
Four of us took Jack in Irons down, my character picked up 2480 XP, but didn't get a badge because it was solo. My toon was an Illusionist/Kinetic controller, had a Spectral Terror and three Decoys fighting, I was using my Blind and Spectral Wounds, the best I could do where fighting was concerned, sapped his strength and speed with siphon powers, and made a contribution to defeating Jack, even if it was a minor contribution compared to the contribution the other three were making.
Note: To my knowledge no one died fighting him. At least not the two I could see and would have been affected by any healing I could have provided. I also didn't hit them with speed boost since that could have helped them do more damage faster.
So, is this what the game designers want? Every hero for himself to get a badge or were they expecting heroes to band together and cooperate like needs to be done with Luska? My main has died 21 times fighting Luska and got the badge after the first death. Why? Because fighting Luska is fun and it takes a lot of people to do it. She's an empath defender and a lot of green numbers are seen when the healing aura goes off.
If there's a good reason for this system, I won't have a problem taking the time to heal others and help in that way, but the current system doesn't promote cooperation, it promotes an 'every man or team for himself' mentality. Great for villains, but is that the 'vision' Statesman has for heroes?
Note: Before the battle I deceived a couple of Red Cap Hooligans and they cut down nine other Rascals and Hooligans. No XP, but it was nine fewer villains everyone had to fight. Spectral Terror was keeping minions and the like from attacking anyone near Jack. I did work to make it easier for all of us by doing so, just in case someone feels the word 'griefing' should be used here.
